Playlist “Psyche van het Folk”, Radio Centraal, Antwerpen New singersongwriters, mostly with a high degree of emotional richness and a few psychfolk reissues. 2 radioshows. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part 1, June 16th, 2004 : New singer-songwriters with emotional creativity in voice. NEW RELEASES : * Silber Rec. Remora, Pale Horse and Rider, Rivulets : The Alcohol EPs (US,2002)**°°’ Remora : Tr.4, “Joy Oblivion” 3 min Tr.5, “Oblivion” 7 min Rivulets : Tr.12, “Gimme excess” 9 min Tr.13, “Shakes” 5 min 24 Original, perhaps unique concept with alcohol addiction songs. Cautious ! Because it makes you drunk listening to it. Remora’s tracks are deep into the intoxication. Rivulets tracks are over the edge of holding control during an improvisation at “Gimme excess”, surely near the end of it, which makes it oh so real... The album needed a few listens before I got into it. Now I’m hooked into its addiction. Home-recorded. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/poor.html * Young God Rec. Devendra Banhart : Oh me oh my.. (US, 2002)***° Tr.3, “The Charles C.Leary” 3 min Tr.8, “Lend me your teeth” 2 min 5 28 This first release had something weird, like a genius who just came out of its closet. A new genre of oddity blues? Home-recorded. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/poor.html * Young God Rec. Devendra Banhart : Rejoycing the hands (US,2004)****° Tr.4, “Pughkeepsie” 3 min Soundfile : http://www.aquariusrecords.org/audio/devendrapough.m3u Tr.5, “Dogs they make up the dark” 2 min Tr.8, “See saw” 4 min Tr.15,“Insect Eyes” 6 min 15 A bit more “normal”, this time well recorded, with great guitar and an even more original and matured singing style. Very intuitive texts. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/poor.html * Bastet Mag. VA : The Golden Apples of the sun (var.2004)**** -selected by Devendra Banhart- Tr.1, Vetiver (with Hope Sandoval):"Angel's Share" (from the "Vetiver" LP) 5 min Didn’t try the album, but the chosen track sounds beautiful ! Tr.2, Joanna Newsom:"Bridges and Balloons" (from "The Milk-Eyed Mender" LP) 4 min Hopefully I will review and airplay more of her later. This is originally coloured voice with harp. Tr.3, Six Organs of Admittance:"Hazy SF" (previously unreleased) 4 min Their latest album will get review and airplay later. Reviews of older albums at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview3.html Tr.7, Vashti Bunyan & Devendra Banhart – "Rejoicing in the Hands" (from the "Rejoicing in the Hands of the Golden Empress" LP) 2 min Vasthi Bunyan’s purity acid folk early 70’s release is also worth to trace ! I heard she’s married now with Robin Williamson ?? Info on Vasthi Bunyan : http://www.anotherday.co.uk/ Tr.20, Antony - "The Lake" (from "Live at Saint Olaye's with Current 93") 5 min 20 First time I heard from him. Couldn’t trace the guy either. Very special, and emotionally rich voice. Brilliant ! Piano voice only. If anyone knows more about him, please e-mail me !! This is a splendid compilation of new singer-songwriters with subtle guitar & sensitive voices. Only 1000 printed, so be quick!! It’s very good! For more details and comments see review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/poor.html * Dream Mag. Dream Magazine#4 Tr.4, The Kitchen Cynics: “Alchemus” 5 min 68 Great, and still my favourite new magazine that seemed to overlap several interests and entries of my website/radioshow. The CD isn’t one to work musically on its own for repeated listens, but of course Kitchen Cynics I always like. Here he goes electric and makes a fine song referring to the “dreams” subject/interest of the magazine. Thank you Alan for mentioning me too ! Info magazine : http://www.dreamgeo.com/ Info Kitchen Cynics : http://singersong.homestead.com/TheKitchenCynics.html * Touch & Go Cocorosie: La Maison de mon Rêve (US,2004)***°’ Tr.4, «Good Friday» 4 min Soundfile : http://www.tgrec.com/hijk/mp3/coco/CocoRosie-Good_Friday.mp3 Tr.7, «Candyland» 3 min 7 Cocorosie was also listed with a track at the “Golden Apples” compilation. Couldn’t help it playing some extra tracks of their album again, even when I airplayed three tracks only recently before. This is a brilliant theatrical duo female vocals album with inventive home-play games and cynical texts. “Candyland” is played by computer-game background sounds and harp. Very funny and beautiful at the same time. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html * Fatcat Rec. Animal Collective: Sung Tongs (US,2004)***°’ Tr.4, “Winters love” 5 min Soundfile : http://217.158.65.110/MP3/SF144196-01-01-03.mp3 Tr.6, “Sweet Road” 2 min Tr.12,“Whaddit I done” 5 min 12 Odd group. Style has something of Residents oddity, has also elements of something of an army music band for children, of ritual folk music for puppets, also sounds like Cerberus Shoal vocal harmonisation put into a musical box, and things like that. Very original! Last track has wah wah vocals. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/expanding.html * Un-labeled Greenpot Bluepot : Warraw (US,rec.2002,2003)****° Tr.5-7, 2,5,3=10 min Tr.9, 8 min 18 Great improvisational/story-like inspiration, with some vocal experiments. Only 100 made, with hand made cover. Last copies at Other Music. Be quick! Highly recommended! I’ll ask L.W. to review the textual concept. Review and link to homepage & to Other Music at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html * Southern Rec. Elizabeth Anka : Vajagic (US, 2003)*** Tr.2, “Around here” 5 min Complaint-like singer-songwriting with tempered rock drive in voice. All other songs are similar. I hear a singing saw, guitars humming, xylophone,.. on the background. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html * Anti- Jolie Holland : Escondida (US,2004)***° Tr.9, “Darlin Ukelele” 5 min 8 Beautiful bluesy voice, here accompanied by band. This very nice track is with ukulele, some singing saw, whistling. This is one of my most preferable tracks. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/folk.html * demo Eva Hafner : “Mijaninag” (demo recorded for “Oorcontact”, radioshow by Bert Leysen on Radio Centraal) (CH,2001?)***°° Tr.2, “Freight Train” 2 min Tr.5, “Hangman” 4 min Tr.6, “Blue Hillside exp” (guitar instr.) 3 min Tr.7, “Motherless child” 5 min 14 Eva has a very beautiful folkvoice, which reminded me at first a bit at Vashti Bunyan, but here more worn out as from a broken naivety. She managed to come over to Antwerp now and then to sing in folkbars. Latest thing Bert heard is she met the wrong people, went to US with them, and got onto heroin or things like that.. I tried to trace her trough the net. She must be fine I guess because I could trace her!! Most songs here are in English. Once I heard her sing beautiful songs in “Switzerdutch”, the local unofficial language of Switzerland. This is a seriously recorded demo, only one copy exist, and my own. It are songs and one instrumental accompanied by double tracked guitar and some mouthharmonica. Her new songs are still with a worn out voice, but also with an older voice. Thank you, Bert Lysen for borrowing this. Small review : Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/folk2.html * demo Eva Hafner : Eva Hafner (San Fransisco demo)(CH,2004?)*** (CDR) Tr. 23, “Blue Side Experience” (instr.) 2 min soundfile : http://artists.iuma.com/site-bin/mp3gen/68287/IUMA/Bands/Eva_Hafner/audio/Eva_Hafner_-_Blue_Hill_Side_Experience.mp3 Tr.24, “Deep Waters” 4 min 6 Soundfile : http://artists.iuma.com/site-bin/mp3gen/68287/IUMA/Bands/Eva_Hafner/audio/Eva_Hafner_-_Deep_Waters.mp3 Her voice might be worn out and smoked out much more, sounds also with more severity, all innocence gone to reality. Someone seemed to have picked her out from the streets of San Fransisco to record this couple of songs and instrumentals. Small review : Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/folk2.html Webpage with soundfiles : http://artists.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Eva_Hafner/ Not enough place for airplaying Marissa Nadler here, so she will be included in part 2, next week. Outro : * ESP Patty Waters : Sings (US,1966)****° Tr.4, “Sad am I, glad am I” 2 min Darkest emotional record ever made. Info : http://singersong.homestead.com/Patty_Waters.html * Amatish Kathleen Yearwood : Book of hate (CAN,1991)*** Tr.5, “Pastorale” 10 min I traded this release with a fan of hers. This is a great avant-garde outraged emotional track. Only this track is like that. Still need more time for the full album. She’s more of a rock s/sw singer I guess. Info (with other soundfiles) : http://www.hrmusic.com/artists/kyart.html http://www.angelfire.com/music/kathleenyearwood/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part 2, June 23rd, 2004 : Ambient-electro-folk, a few new psych-folk reissues + some new singer-songwriters. 1. Ambient-electro-folk : * Fatcat Rec. Múm : Summer make good (ICE,2004)****° Tr.2, “Weeping Rock, rock” 7 min Tr.3, “Nightly Cares” 5 min Tr.4, “The ghosts you draw on my back” 5 min Sound : http://realaudio01.datapipe.net:8080/ramgen/othermusic/theghost.rm Tr.11,“Will the summer make good for all sins ?” 5 min Wonderful, sensitive, subtle and moody ambient-electrofolk item with high pitched whispery, breathy, emotionally rich, child-like voice. Highly recommended! Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview5.html * Emperor Norton Rec. Takako Minekawa : Maxion (JAP,2000)**° Tr.4, “Brioche” 2 min -24 Electro-folk & indie-pop with sometimes child-like voice too. Has beautiful moments. Must listen a few more times to this before final conclusions. Some inspiration might have derived from musically sounding events with language. With good subtle ideas in mixing. Review: http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview5.html 2. Reissues : * Normal Rec. Tony, Caro & John : all on the first day (UK,1970)***°° Tr.2, “Eclipse of the moon” 3 min Tr.3, “Meg II” 3 min Tr.5, “Apocalypse” 3 min 9 -43 Beautiful psych-folk item similar like Agincourt, Sallyangie, Trader Horne,.. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreviews2.html * Acme Rec. Ithaca (UK,1970)****° Finally a legimite reissue ! The second LP by Ithaca will re-released later this year. Combination of psychfolk with Pink Floyd influences. Very quiet, modest music. Info : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/PeterHowell.html * Acme Rec. Agincourt : Fly away (UK,1970)***°° Tr.1, “When I awoke” 4 min Tr.4, “Joy in the finding” 4 min Tr.9, “Lisa” 4 min 12 -55 Acid/psych-folk. Not all songs are as incredibly beautiful, but it still is a must-have. Similar in style like Mellow Candle, Trader Horne, Tony,Caro & John,.. Info : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/PeterHowell.html (new pictures added) -Request for reissue : * Cerebella Joseph Pusey : In my ladies chamber (UK,1977)****° Tr.2, “Blue Jay preacher” 2 min Tr.3, “The lady Nicolette” 4 min 6 -61 A fantastic s/sw album that definitely needs a reissue!! 12-string guitar with piano and voice and other arrangements.. There it’s airplayed now. More in a later show. Cover and links added at http://singersong.homestead.com/BOBTHEIL.html 3. New singer & singer/songwriters. -Request for publication: * demo Marissa Nadler : Ballads of living and dying (US,2004)****° Tr.1, “Fifty Five Falls” 6 min Tr.4, “Undertaker” 3 min Tr.7, “Days of Rum” 5 min Tr.10, “Annabella Lee (Edgar Allen poe) 6 min Tr.11, bonus track 3 min 23 -84 Beautiful somewhat melancholic voice, somewhat reminiscent in colour of voice of Elizabeth Rapp. She sings (mostly her own) dark songs in a pleasant, fresh ‘magical folk’ way. Beautiful!! Marissa still looks for a label to release this recommended demo !! With fine sparse arrangements, very suitable to the songs. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/folk2.html * Lonel.Whistl.M. Robin O’Brien : Ilsanjo (US,2004)***° Tr.9, “Blue Light” 4 min Tr.11,“Apples” 4 min 8 -92 Folk flavoured so-called “heavenly” voice. These songs are more appropriate how I appreciate her voice and arrangements best. First song are voice arrangements, clarinet, xylophone, double bass loop. “Apples” has double acoustic guitar by Robin & Don Campeau with voice of Robin. Review and links : http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html * Monotreme Rec. Picastro : Red Your Blues (US,rec.2001,iss.2003)**°’ Tr.1, “Winter notes” 5 min Tr.2, “Fifth Wall” 4 min Sound : http://www.monotremerecords.com/picastro/audio/picastro_fifth_wall.mp3 Tr.3, “Mine” 3 min 11 -103 Sound : http://www.monotremerecords.com/picastro/audio/picastro_mine.mp3 Underground Indierock item with singer-songwriter’s references.. I especially like the first half of the album, which is the most intimate side, where cello and voice has the complete lead in the compositions (***°). Review: http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters-2.html * Acuarela Aroah : No podemos ser amigos (SP,2001)**° Tr.1, “Myriam, la primera” 4 min -107 On this album I prefer the Spanish songs. Aroah’s first album is ok, but I think she really had an even better group- sound and compilation of songs with the next album : * Acuarela Aroah : The last laugh (SP,2003)**** Tr.5, “Horoscope” 4 min Tr.6, “The lonely drunk” 3 min Tr.7, “Not amused” 2 min Tr.10,“Madrid” 3 min Tr.12,“Fuck Rock” 3 min 15 -121 Singer-songwriter album made with cooperation of some American artists like Greg Weeks, Margie Wienk, which often gives this very nice acid-folk touches.. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html * Tract Rec. VA. : Eye of the beholder II (var.,2001)*° Tr.7, Scout Nibblett : “Ripe with Life” 4 min 8 190 This is a song with double-layered vocals and oddly tuned guitar. Another track which I found interesting came from Picastro. I air-played her solo item instead of the track here. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters-2.html Info : http://www.secretlycanadian.com/secretlycanadian/scoutniblett/ * Tract Rec. VA. : Eye of the beholder III (var.2003)***’ Tr.6, Diana Daeby : “Crazy” 4 min -125 Fragile song possibly about someone who is different but considered as so strange as “crazy”. Hopefully more about her later. Review compilation at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters-2.html Info : www.dianadarby.com * Tract Rec. VA. : Eye of the beholder III (var.2003)***’ Tr.5, The Virginia Reel : “New Song” ->3 min -130 Fine indie softrock song with romantic melody. Guitar, drums, organ. Review compilation at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters-2.html Info : www.thevirginiareel.com * Camera Obscura Rec. Verdure : The telescope Dreampatterns (US,2002)*** Tr.1, “Into the blacktrees” 3 min -133 Sounds not deliberate like an Acid Folk version of very early Green On Red, especially the singing (voice) / mood. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/psychfolkpopreview2.html * Down There Rec. Green On Red : Green On Red (US,1982)****° Tr.2, “Hair and Skin” 4 min -137 Only if I have tome left. Very melancholic indierock with psych flavour, and with fantastic organ. Really a shame the group changed their sound after their 3rd product. * Tract Rec. VA. : Eye of the beholder III (var.2003)***’ Tr.1, Celestine : “Come on” 3 min -140 Also a bit post-indierock but I really like the melodic idea in guitar-pitches, the keyboards, the indierock touch and the emotional value. Nice sound. Info : www.celestine.nu Tr.2, The Strugglers : “Fine-Tuned” 3 min -143 Sounds a bit like Palace/Bonnie Prince Billie, especially the emotional variation in voice is similar. Review compilation at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters-2.html Info : www.thestrugglers.org  Good compilation of new singer-songwriters and related music. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters-2.html * Silber Rec. Jamie Barnes : The Fallen Acrobat (US,2004)***° Tr.4, “For centuries” 4 min Tr.6, “Burning Leaves” 4 min 8 150 If time left : Tr.11, “A ceiling lit with stars” 3 min Fine singer-songwriter item.
