Radioshow "PVHF" on radio Centraal, Antwerp : 2007-11-24 : 800-1000 PM CREATIVE NEW IDEAS WITH GAMELAN/INDONESIAN MUSIC, (MIDDLE) EASTERN / EASTERN EUROPE WITH TRANCE / EXPERIMENTAL / ROCK & JAZZ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Palace Of Light Steve Peters : Occasional Music (US,2007)***° Tr.3, “Planctus” 13 min (fragment 3 min) The only piece from this album with gamelan and flute, not an unuqual piece but a fine improvisation with these Indonesian / eastern elements. Most music is rather contemporary with space for silence. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/newmusic.html#anchor_84 * Palace Of Lights Gregory Taylor : Amalgam : Aluminium / Hydrogen (US,2007)****’ Tr.1, “Bem” 5 min -8 I airplayed this before, but it was nice to put in a fragment of this semi- acoustic sound manipulated gamelan with electronica. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/newmusic.html#anchor_84 * New World Evan Ziporyn & Gamelan Galak Tika (US,2000)***° Tr.11, “Tire Fire” (part 4) 5 min -13 First piece is double with contemporary gamelan. Second piece is played with electric guitars (Eric Byers, Mark Stewart), keyboards (Yokiko Ueno), electric bass (Blake Newman) and gamelan (Gamelan Galak Tika). I like the last, soft avant-rock&jazz crossover part best. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/newmusic.html#anchor_88 * New World V.A.: American Works for Balinese Gamelan Orchestra (US,1993)***°° Tr.1, Evan Ziporyn & Nyoman Windha : “Kekembangan” 16 min -29 This strangest track is a combination of jazz (slightly in an Ethiopian fashion, but more disharmonious) with gamelan. A brilliant example of new possibilities. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/newmusic.html#anchor_94 * Earthville Gamelan-X : Satu (US,2007)****°? Tr.2, “Hot-Crossed Bronze” 5 min Tr.3, “Hanuman's Leap” 4 min Tr.11,“Unfuhrling” 10 min -18 -48 Great combination of contemporary music with bits of big band jazz, jazz & jazz- rock (on these tracks), Rock In Opposition and who knows what else, combined with gamelan. Last first RIO/progressive styled track has besides other elements, a jazzy trumpet solo improvisation that reminds me a bit of Balkan brass music. It also has a part with a classical wordless voice harmoniously close to a clarinet solo with 2 contemporary classic violins. Brilliant tracks. Preview-radio CDR release. Review of its proper release will be added later. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDOREVIEWS2.html#anchor_78 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * private pressing Safety Magic : Voices (RU,2007)***° Tr.7, 10 min -58 Combination of moody jazz, didgeridoo, vocal experiments, shamanism,..best to experience live or for a CD, from start to finish Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/WORLDfusion.html#anchor_84 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Chin Chin Bebo Best & The Super Lounge Orchestra : Sitar and Bossa (I,2007)**** Tr.5, “Whole Little Love” 5 min -63 Bossa Nova and other dance rhythms and good arrangements makes this album successful. Of course this is much lighter compared to the previous listed albums. The “Whole Little Love” riffs (Led Zeppelin) are just in the few first notes. This is new modern beats with a jazzy samba. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/bollywoodbeat.html#anchor_162 * Astral Projection Lamp Of The Universe : Heru (NZ,rec.2003-2004,pub.2007)*** New reissue of this now deceased, often sitar-trance psych styled New Zealand band. I only want to mention this in the playlist, because stylistically it fit less. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html#anchor_113 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * URCKarm V.A.: Post-Asiatic Lost War Music -a compilation of Eastern influenced experimental music (US,2007)***°' Tr.1, Forgotten Fish Memory Orchestra : “Iron Shoes” 6 min (shortened to 5 min) Tr.10, Neung Phak : “Sadchatri” 3 min 8 -71 Brilliant compilation of Asian & a few times Middle Eastern influenced improvised, experimental and some new chamber music. The album might be used a second time in the next acidfolk related Radioshow. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/post-asiatic.html#anchor_466 * - INTERVIEW WITH ACTRESS OF THE GOLDEN VOICE, SOPHEA – 10 min -81 Rising Falcon Cinema Greg Cahill : "The Golden Voice" (US/CAM,2007)**** Info : http://progressive.homestead.com/CAMBODIA.html#anchor_79 * Buda Musique V.A. : Zanzibara 2 : 1965-1975 Golden Years of Mombasa Taarab (ZZ,2007)***** Tr.10, Matano Juma : “Send to my beloved” 5 min While this is rather Arab/Persian influenced, this music is from an important trade country in Africa. This track is a good crossover with an African influence. Other influences in this country were Indian music / Bollywood. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast3.html#anchor_134 * URCKarm Rec. Hop-Frog's Drum Jester Devotional : Chants de Sewage (US,2007)**°’ Tr.1, (fragment) 4 min Hypno-trance-experimental music with some Arab/Northern African ethno influences. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/experimental.html#anchor_470 * Lollipop Shop V.A. : Eastern Space Cakes (HU/PL/RO,rec.2005-2006,pub.2007)**** Tr.10, Asunta (PL) : Landscape VIII” 5 min -80 Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog22.html#anchor_273 * Lollipop Shop Korai Öröm : Volume Zero (HU,rec.1997-2005,pub.2007)***° Tr.3, “2000/1” 9 min Trance-psych with East European touches. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog22.html#anchor_268 * Beta-Lactam Volcano The Bear : Amidst The Noise and Twigs (UK,2007)**** Tr.1, “The Sting Of Haste” 3 min Tr.2, “Before we came to this religion” 6 min Tr.8, “One hundred years of infamy” 9 min -20 Weird post-Comus chamber-folk. Last, more jazzy improvisation fits with themes from earlier in the Radioshow. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/expanding.html#anchor_112 * Ali Baba and his 40.. V.A. : Waking Up Scheherazade (var,comp.2007)***°° (acdr)Tr.11, Raks : “Raks Dance” 3 min (acdr)Tr.5, Kourosh Yaghmaie : ?? 3 min 6 Compilation of 60s styled Arab/Persian music. This is a not typical at all Persian track, sounding slightly like a Northern African dance, followed by a single track (from around 1974) from Kourosh Yaghmaie. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast3.html#anchor_135 * Also good to mention is that just recently, two DVD’s were published with some videos broadcast on Iranian public TV around 1975-1979, which merely is the best period. There’s mostly song driven music, but the arrangements from this time are beautiful : partly orchestrated, or soft-rock-like, sometimes with a bit of disco/quickstep/.. influences. One track is pure funk, another one has beautiful acoustic guitar. Each dvd has a track of Kourosh Yaghmaie, and also from Gogoosh one of her most funky/rocking tracks is included. A selection of these DVD’s combined with Dr.Lloyd Millere’s Persian jazz performances on television I hope to show in filmmuseum next year on a small series of lectures with documentaries mostly. 3 of them will be on lost music cultures after a tyranny (Iran, Turkey, Cambodia). I wish I knew one more subject/documentary that would finish this series so that I can make final plans for this project. See http://www.musicboxla.com/khsa.html for these DVD’s. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * demo  Hayvanlar Alemi : Summer Hits 2007 (rec.2000 & 2007)*** Tr.2, 4 min Turkish psych-rock with a slight touch of the Caribbean. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview1.html#anchor_65 Outro : * Shadoks Shark Move : Ghede Chokra's (INDO,1970,re.2006)****' Tr.1, “My Life” 10 min (until end of show) Reissue of a great Indonesian psych-rock album. After the Guruh Gipsy LP, this is another winner. After this album, the band formed Giant Step which soon will get reissues too.
