ETHNOPROGRESSIVE/PSYCH WITH SOME JAZZ FLAVOURS.. + EXTRA HALF HOUR OF WEST-AFRICAN AFROCK-(PSYCH)ROCK ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- grading in playlist for gradings judged on listening to individual tracks… *** vg **** perf ***** must have heard/can’t get better +°some tracks better +‘ possibly better, according to opinion/vision ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Futher Out Annabel (Lee) : preview cdr -demo version- (US,pub.2009)***°° Tr.6, “Glow” 4 min Tr.8, “My homeland” 3 min -10 Still don’t understand the lack of label interest for this one. Therefore two more Tracks of this new talent. Emotionally strong triphop flavoured jazz tracks. Undefiniable song Music with outside jazz flavours. Review on http://singersong.homestead.com/AnnabelLee.html#anchor_814 * Discus Julie Tippetts & Martin Archer : Ghost of Gold (UK,rec.2007-2008,pub.2009)**° Tr.6, “The Brink” 2 min Remember Julie Driscoll’s debut, her work with Brian Auger, then her more free jazz period after having married to Keith Tippet, which made her change her name to Julie Tippetts.. This is her latest release of spoken word poetry with soundscapes improvisations mostly. This track is a rare vocal melody approach on the album, a track fitting best with the radio show. Review on http://www.psychemusic.org/jazz.html#anchor_201 * Ozella Karl Seglem : Norskjazz.no (NO,2009)*** Karl Seglem’s First classic jazz recording. Too style-based traditional to list it. Previous album reviews on http://psychefolk.com/FUSION.html * Home Karoline de la Serna y Los Mapaches : Traduzca (B,2009)**°' Tr.1, “Abertura” 6 min -18 Intro that seems to improvise towards her own gypsy trail remembering her own roots in Spain... A very good track. Most of the album are Spanish songs. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/ethnofolk.html#anchor_77 * Omega Pacific Dwiki Dharmawan World Peace Orchestra (INDO,2009)**°° Tr.1, “The Spirit Of Peace” 5 min Tr.4, “Jancer” 7 min 12-30 Very good ambitious jazz-fusion rock flavoured album with on the first track a very rich world music mix of styles with a small orchestra. The second track is Indonesian jazz(- rock) with fusion and some progressive elements. These two I personally think are the strongest tracks of the album. (Thank you Suryo for sending me this!). Review on http://www.psychemusic.org/INDOREVIEWS.html#anchor_79 * Home BASta! : Cycles (B,2009)**°° Tr.3, “Sonan” 5 min -35 Popularised minimalistically arranged bass Music. This track is most interesting for its skilfully and different colours use of the bass strings, recorded with multi-tracking. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/belgium4.html#anchor_157 * Moonjune Moraine : Manifest DeNsity (US,2009)**°° Tr.3, “Nacho Sunset” 5 min Tr.11, “Middlebräu” 7 min 13-48 Not too complex, fine chamber-rock with jazz(-rock) flavours, most often led by guitarist Dennis Rhea. My two favourite tracks. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/chambermusicrock.html#anchor_327 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Subl.Frequencies V.A. : Shadow Music Of Thailand -LP/CD- (THAI,rec.60s,pub.2008-LP-& 2009-CD-)***°° Tr.3, The Son Of PM : “Koisun Ching” 3 min Tr.5, Johnny Guitar : “Mon Du Dow” 4 min Tr.9, PM7/Jupiter : “Pone Tala Pone” (Indian) 3 min Tr.11,The Son of PM: “Cho Cho Chan” 3 min 13 -61 Now on CD! Yes, The Shadows & also the Ventures were an early important influence on World Music anywhere in the World, which gave a creative opportunity to folk artists to try something different, with electric instruments, making spontaneous crossover styles possible in that early stage. This was also the case in Thailand. This is a compilation of Music from this kind and from this period. When the Music still is rather typical Thai the arrangements are already different, and like a new experimental approach for Thai Pop music. Different highlights show a Thai flavour on more western flavoured styles. Some of my favourite tracks of the compilation. Review : http://psychemusic.org/THAILAND.html#anchor_79 * Subl.Frequencies V.A. : Siamese Soul -Thai Pop Spectacular vol 2 (THAI,rec.60s->80s,pub.2009)**°°’ Tr.2, Jeun-Jai Boon Praraksa : “Ha Fang Kheng Kan/ The partner’s competition” 4 min Tr.4, Lam Yong : “Kati Sorn Jai/lessons for life)” 4 min Tr.12, Hong Thon Daw U-Don : “Isan” 4 min 12-73 But also soul, jazz, Afro?? and funk had its influence on Thai pop Music, which these tracks surely prove. Track 4 is a sublime danceable track. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/THAILAND.html#anchor_86 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Shadoks Witch : Introduction (ZAM,1975??)***° Tr.3 & tr.7 7 min Garage/Rolling Stones flavoured original African rock with catchy songs and attractive power. Review : http://psychemusic.org/Africa4.html#anchor_276 * Subl.Frequencies Group Doueh : Treeg Salaam (WS,rec.1989-1996,pub.2009)**°°° Tr.3, “Beatte Harab” 5 min Crazed hypnotic fuzz track, a hypnotic psych highlight making this worth checking out. Second album on the same label. Review : http://psychemusic.org/Africa2.html (soon) * Subl.Frequencies Group Bombino (NIG,2007)***°’ Tr.2, “Imuhar” 6 min Tr.6, “Imouhare” 5 min Two different sides : one private guitar recording, and one wild electric band recording. Two times the same track in two very different versions and approaches. * Gear Fab Goliath (US,1970,re.2009)**° Tr.1, “Taking Back Roads” 4 min Good album & discovery of this east coast / hard rockfish band. This is a harder edged track. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/70S.html#anchor_313 * Analog Africa Orchestre Poly Rhythmo de Cotonou : Echos Hypnotique (BN,1969-1979,re.2009)***°’ Tr.2, “Mi Ve Wa Se” 5 min Tr.12, “Ma Dou Sou Nou Mio” 6 min 11 Second album from the series of one of the more interesting and popular dance Music bands from Benin, who more often show an incredible skilful use of rhythm, and a strong energy. Two tracks which prove the sometimes incredible and unique use of poly-rhythms. The latest version of the band was in Antwerp lately. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/benin.html#anchor_305 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Nasoni Hansi Biebl Band : Savannah (DDR,1975,pub.2009)***° Tr.1, “Klunken-Soul” 7 min (Tr.5, Ouverture/Rocking Changes” 13 min) Nicely developing improvisation with some bluesrock influence. From a just recently discovered tape from a DDR radioshow. Never released before ! Also this band uses complex rhythms, like 15/16 on the second track. Not enough time for two tracks, so I only airplay the first one. Also this track was in 7/8th and 6/8th if I heard well. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/Germany.html#anchor_81 * private The Univerzals : Ocean Of Light (DK,2009)**°’ Tr.12B, 936-2120, “Spellbound (return)” 12 min 103 My favourite track from the band, a hidden, different return of the first track. Other tracks are different, but this is a track with a Turkish/Kurdish (??) singer & theme. A great track!! Wish they had more tracks like this. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/danmark.html#anchor_271 * Transubstans Siena Root : Different Realities -CD/LP- (S,2009)***° Tr.7, “Ahir Bhairav” 3 min Tr.8, “Bhimpalasi” 2 min Tr.9, “Shree” 3 min Tr.10,“dOG” 10 min 18 –>end show Psych-rock band shows in their new album a very good ethno-rock part with middle eastern/medieval AND Indian influence.
