Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium 2002-09-18 : (Mostly) New Turkish Progressive Music * Musea Rec. Asia Minor : Crossing the Line (TÜ/F,1979?)*** Tr.2, "Mazhur Gozler" 5 min Tr.4, "Misfortune" 7 min Tr.8, "Hagal Dolu Gunler Için" 5 min Musea Rec. Asia Minor : Between Flesh and Divine (TÜ/F,1980)*** Tr.1, "Nightwind" 7 min 24 Fusion progressive music styles, without much Turkish style influences. Ada Müzik D-100 : Kirmizi Evin Hüznü (199?) Tr.1, "Neden,Neden ?" 6 min Tr.2, "Ciglik" 5 min 35 Only one track stands out. Second track is ok too. Some more Folkpop and blues Poprock on the other tracks. Kalan Musik Serdar Ateser : Avdet Seyri (1998)** Tr.1, "Insanbul" 5 min Tr.2, "Tesis" 8 min Tr.5, "Olimpos Sakini" 4 min 17 Music for a movie with some very nice fusing guitar solos, sax outbursts on the first two chosen tracks. On most tracks the concept and the talents involved does not come out that much, musically and structurally. Zihni Müzik Ihtiyaç Molasi : Milad (1999)***°° Tr.1, "Cizgi" 4 min Tr.4, "Milad" 4 min Tr.5, "Ortamali" 7 min Tr.9, "Delek" 2 min Tr.10,"Delikanbli" 4 min Combination of very progressive and original ideas (in both composition and playing, with a strong rhythm feel, perfectly fitting keyboards, mostly piano, enlightening classical/folk violin, nice effects, splendid guitars, in a fusing art-rock way with chamber music rock or RIO abilities, combined with a more pop style in the songs. Very talented. A must have heard. Ada Müzik Replikas : Dadaruhi (2002)***° Tr.4, "Haydi Ses Duy" 3 min Tr.8, "Karabasan" 4 min Tr.9, "Bir Baglam Roka" 7 min 84 Tr.13,"Tabu" 6 min 90 Nice psychedelic/progressive rock with modern production of electronic sounds, studio effects, samplers. Improvisation style that creates structural ideas might be the same as Zen. Ada Müzik Zen : Suda Balik (1994)*° Still somewhat unstructured Faust-like acoustic underground improvisations. Ada Müzik Zen : Derya (1996)** The same thing. Only last track shows a more psychedelic improvisation, a track still somewhat thick and cloudy. It can't convince me so much. Ada Müzik Zen : Tabul (1997)****° * Tr.1,"Ariza Oyun Havasi" 3 min Tr.2, "Derdimi Anla" 5 min Tr.3, "Düz Gel" 7 min Tr.4, "Tanbul" 6 min Tr.5, "Asir Hasta" 2 min 23 107 Finally a good area for improvisation, with that extra psychedelic rock element, backwards and electronic effects, experimental playing, middle eastern touches, deranged effects on voice,... Fantastic. Ada Müzik Zen : Bakırköy Akıl Hastanesi'nde (1999) Tracks will be played another time. This CD did not came in time for this radioprogram. Private Fairuz Derin : Bulut (2002)***°->**** Tr.1, "Kaçmaaa" 8 min Tr.2, "Sinek Saz" 5 min Tr.3, "Kervan Geçmez" 4 min Tr.6, "Singing in the Olmadi" 6 min 22 129 Very good demo with lots of fusing rock elements, 70's progressive with funky and oddly touches, nice electric guitar work, weird space effects, hammond organ, electric piano ?, Acid Jazz, middle eastern psych rock, paisty pop rock, humour, ska/skunk like rebellious energy in singing, etc....Unique and talented. Private Divan : demo (TÜ/D,2002)*** Tr.2, "Lambaya püf de" 4 min Fusing Pop Rock, Underground Rock and hard rock with middle eastern flavour in one of the two tracks I heard. The groups band members changed recently, so it's not clear in which direction the group is going to evolve. I hope they will still work out the middle eastern elements. Second track of both I heard is more plain modern rock. Private Bonus Track : demo (2001?)*** Tr.1, "I" 6 min Tr.3, "Neyzer on the highway" 3 min Tr.4, "Orientation" 5 min Hard Acid Middle Eastern Rock. First release will be out at the end of 2002. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium Okt 9th 2002 : Turkish Music : Pop and Fusing styles. History of Turkish music : small overview 10 min EMI Ilhan Irem : the best of 2 : Ask Iksiri / Cadi Agaci (1997)*° Tr.6, "Yankilar" 4 min Tr.8, "Sevgi Sevgiyele Cogalir" 4 min Tr.12, "Gece Yolculugu" 5 min 13 At times almost sickly depressed and very sweet romantic but so deeply submerged into it, it is charming. Not so much for its musical challenge interesting, but for its warm accompanied nice voice, its personal world with almost female cure. Lots of his music is very commercial, but when he leaves out the drumming machines it's dreamy character is catchy if you only go into the mood itself. EMI Ilhan Irem : Koridor (1994)**° Tr.1, "Iki Duvar Arasinda" 7 min Tr.2, "Merhaba Koridor" 4 min Tr.4, "Gül Kokulu Ceviz Sandigi" 5 min Tr.6, "Gece Perisi" 4 min 20 33 Some New Age Pop Rock instrumentation, deeply emotional involved in a personal expression. A mellow sweetness recalls a very sad but beautiful world with the feeling of loss. Very good for its emotional expression. Some much more commercial tracks without the same motion made fans ask for a drumcomputerless version, which was the start to record the album "Romans" : EMI Ilhan Irem : Romans (1994)***°' Tr.1, "Aksamüstleri/Evenings" 5 min Tr.4, "Saril Samnasik Sari Gülüm/Mellow Ivy Rose" 5 min Tr.5, "Krizalit/Kristalin" 2 min Tr.7, "Gece Perisi" 4 min (Tr.9, "Romans/Romance" 5 min) 21 55 The recording sadly enough still is with a little bit drum computer, a bit too harsh to be fully effective. Ilhan's most personal expression. Very Gothic in some way. One of the most sad recordings I know of. In this release there's use of electric (electric guitar, electric Baglama,..) and electronic instruments, and the unusual use of the instrument of a mouth harmonica (on track 2, also chosen for the wonderful electric guitar at the end).
