Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium 2003-12-03 : Tibetan Fusions & crossover use of Tibetan musical elements. * 3D Sound Psychic TV : Dreams less sweet (UK,198?)***** Tr.3, "Botanica" 1 min Tr.4, "Iron Glove" 2 min Tr.8, "Eleusis" 3 min Tr.9, "Medmenham" 1 min Tr.13,"Eden 2" 4 min Tr.17, "Silver and Gold" 3 min Tr.18, "In the Nursery" 6 min 20 One of the most interesting items from 80's, with classical minimal music, with very arranged songs, experimental improvisations and arrangements, weird mixes like monks Gregorian singing combined with trained grumbling dogs, or recordings (like bells) through telephone. Very varied and beautifully arranged. In a complete & realistic spectrum I find this meditative with sound and content. After this Psychic TV did another recording with even more use of Tibetan instruments & mood. Unfortunately I sold this release many years ago. Also the experimental song, "in the nursery" is impressive with "getting to awareness" noises with car horns, slapping, slashing sounds, voice.. , with a perspective with musicality. After those recordings Psych TV began a very "commercialised" underground career. The gong is combined in sounds with the commonly used instrument of Steven Stapelton, his peeping "singing" metal (aluminium / iron ?) chair, peeping doors ?. For me this album sounds fits very well after "in the nursery". Nurse With Wound is almost synonym for experimental music. Most of the releases are made with a talent to paint, almost three dimensional with sound ideas, mostly somewhat dark in content, but with a wonderful complete musicality. Nadaka : meditation 2 : The lotus of the silent deep (IND,2000)***° Tr.1, "The Souls voyage" 5 min 41 With the Tibetan Choir of the Ganden Shartse Monestary, Vikku Vinayakram on ghatam. This track with gong. Lots of the tracks are with electrified guitar in Indian chords. I like this specific track a lot. Nadaka is an Candadian born Indian raga-guitarist. I like also his Indian classical music fusion concepts. It is not long ago since I did a radioshow about Nadaka, but this track fitted perfetly within this concept too. With a penetrating depth, wideness and high reaching at the same time. Impressive ! This is the most impressive release I heard from Tibetan monks, and monks in general. Popol Vuh : Tantric Songs/Hosianna Mantra (D,1981)***** Tr.1, "Mantra of the touching of the heart" 3 min Tr.2, "Mantra of the touching of the earth" 2 min 5 60 Florian Fricke and his group Popol Vuh have a uncategorisable unique place in musical history. He used elements of progressive music, Tibetan music, Christian elements, Indian elements and his own chromatic tone and melody system. Some say it's the first New Age music but this is not really so. There are also more progressive releases and a few more slightly meditative works. I also like the side project Gila, "Burry my heart at wounded knee", a beautiful progressive/acid folk progressive piece in tribute to the battle at Wounded Knee. A masterpiece, and one of my all time favourites. Some of my favourite choir "harmonies" too. It are especially these intro harmonies that are most impressive. Recorded with the Chorensemble der Bayrische Staatsoper. I believe Florian Fricke recorded some videa around this time in the location of Israel. Partly it is also devotional music. * Gyoto House The Gyuto Monks of Tibet : Sounds of global harmony (TIB,2000)*** Tr.2, "Forgotton times" 5 min 5 74 Going a bit too much into relaxing improvisation sounds, to be very effective or powerful in a real musical spiritual sense. It's nice music, but not as special is it potentionally could have been. It is a combination of overtone singing, Tibetan singing, with sakuhachi flute (high notes), didgeridoo (low notes)and cello (Sarah Hopkins)(middle tones), with some additional bells and whirlies (SH). The flute and singing does not fit too well, and the item is too roughly improvised to have enough in-depth qualities. If we consider what Sarah Hopkins did before this could have been a high potential. The gesture in playing together for a positive goal is nice, but the "willing" and the personal input of direct improvisation was not enough to be as effective as it could have been with more generating ideas. I played the for me best track. The first five pieces were too good and too much a whole piece to leave out anything. Highly recommended. Review with links : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/overtone.html * Private The Windhorse Ensemble : songs in ten directions (US,2002)***° Tr.3, "Jivani-Medicine Buddha Lineage of Sri Lanka"- chant 8 min Tr.4, "Namo Amitabha Buddha- the Western Buddhafield of pure land"-mantra chant 5 min Tr.6, "Silk Route Campfire"-instrumental 5 min Tr.7, "Saga Dawa-Buddha Moon" 5 min -chanting Shakyamuni Buddha's mantra 5 min Tr.8, "Copper Mountain Gait" 5 min -prayers and mantras approaching Zangdakpailri -the glorious cupper mountain land of guru Padmasambhava" 5 min 38 146 The first item that claims the term "Tibetan Fusion" and that deliberately fuses devotional Tibetan music, with Buddhist ideas and stories, combined with world music and other elements, Indian sitar music, in its own particular fusing style. The group is led by an American Vajrayana Buddhist lama. I especially like the Indian Fusions that are somewhat psychedelic world fusion in its devotional chanting. Lama Yeshe Rinpoche plays raga guitar. Last track also has a medieval dance theme and a middle eastern flavour. A few parts are a bit too worked out with textures, but these specific tracks are all very original. Review with links : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/TIBET.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tibetan Fusion will always be reviewed at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/TIBET.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Also worth to mention and to be played another time in its complete score : * Performance Rec. Dr. Timothy Leary : turn on, tune in, drop out (US,1967)***** Soundtrack with music. Trip to the unconscious origin of inner stimulating patterns and back. Timothy really understood his experiments completely. Going back to the origin of man's origin with Eve here is masterly combined with the the figure of Mary, and going back to the zero-point of consciousness in the dark abyss of thoughts is combined with the thought of going back to fusion. * Locust Music Dr. Timothy Leary, Dr. Ralph Metzner & Dr. Richard Alpert : The psychedelic Experience (US,1966)**** Reading based upon a manual based upon "the Tibetan book of the dead". Tibetan Book of the Dead is in fact much more about the awareness of the purpose of the living, and giving the right purpose in the living. Dr.Timothy Leary also uses the spiritual patterns of a voyage trough the stages of consciousness of an afterlife vision to come closer to the inner mind. These works are truly made with integrity. Because Dr.Timothy Leary during his life promoted the use of drugs to discover the inner self he was prosecuted and send to prison in many states. He also stimulated to search for your own kind of religion. At the end of his life he realised that people could use his goals of drug use and free religion not only to complete themselves, but also to divide themselves even more in the shadow of one selves, and he regretted a bit the opposite results in the freedom he wanted to bring to the people. Everything can be used for two reasons, to cure and fuse, or to bring apart and flee from reality. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Other playlists : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/2003.html General index page : www.radiocentraal.be/psychevanhetfolk More detailed index page : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/index.html Receive weekly this playlist before the radioshow with new reviews and additional comments : / ontvang wekelijks playlist vòòr de radio-uitzending : Subscribe / schrijf u in : psychevanhetfolk-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
