Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium : 2003-12-31. CONCEPT WITH EMPHASIS ON SITAR. 1. Slightly more light-weight World Fusions & crossovers from India, and beyond. + 2. The 60's band Pillbugs (who used sitar as well). * Private Natural History : Native Tongues (US,2000)***° Tr.1, "Sunspots" 1 min Tr.6, "Nine" 9 min Tr.10,"Papadoum" (with sitar) 5 min 15 Very improvisational music with inspiration based upon ideas from organised improvisation, nice violin improvisations & ethno-tribal music. Consistent. Review with links : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/WORLD.html * Worldsoul Rec. Superstring Theory : exotic duets and improvisations (?,2003)***° Tr.9, "Friend of Darkness" (with didgeridoo) 8 min Tr.16,"Bay Ridge Raga" (with sitar) 7 min 15 30 (-maybe shortened) Very improvisational play of electric violin with some other instruments. A consistent release. Natural History is another project by the violinist. Review with links : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/WORLD.html * Na Rec. Nana Simopoulos : Gaia's Dream (GR/US,1992)**° A bit more world fusion with a "Celtic" feeling, so not so fitting in this perticular radioshow. Review with links : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/WORLD.html * Na Rec. Nana : Daughters of the sun (GR/US,2001)***' Tr.3, "Siva's Moon Dance" 10 min Tr.5, "Seduction" 8 min 18 48 World music with Indian & Greek elements and some other influences. Review with links : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/WORLD.html * Tap Orient Squeezers : Saddhu (S,1999)*** Tr.4, "Prasad" 6 min 6 54 Indian & some Middle eastern influences, lots of sitar with some subtle ethnorock band arrangements. Review with links : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html * Tap Orient Squeezers : Nagas (S,2000) Much more in direction of modern ethno dance music. Review with links : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html * Tap Orient Squeezers : Nubia (S,2001)? With slightly more modern tribal trance & rhythmic influences. Review with links : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html * Tap In The Labyrinth : Dryad (S,2002)***? Tr.1, "Lost in the woods" 3 min 100 Tr.7, "Jabberwocky" 3 min 6 60 Review with links : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/WORLD.html * Private Raguy Danziger : Dust (IS/US,2002)** Tr.1, "Yietierre" 3 min Tr.9, "Axariai" 6 min 9 69 Still with a flair of "rough"ness, but with some ideas to come from middle eastern ideas into a bit more (like with some electronic & electric arrangements). But not all tracks are worked out like that. I especially like the middle eastern rock track "Axariai". On the moog model "liberation" member Liron was able to play Middle eastern microtones by "bending" the notes. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast.html * Fang Rec. Church of Betty : Comedy of animals (US,1998)**° Tr.9, -instrumental- 4 min 6 75 Indie Pop with Indopop influences. This instrumental is an exceptional track with oboe, didgeridoo, acoustic guitar and hand percussion, and some orchestral arrangements. Review with links at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html * Private Church of Betty : Fruit on the vine (US,1999)***' Tr.1, "The magic in you" 5 min Tr.2, "I swim in you" 4 min Tr.12,"Night Logic" 5 min 15 90 Good compromising style between Indie and Indopop music. Also the singing holds the middle between styles very well. This is the group's best release. These tracks are really great and well balanced. Review with links at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html * Fang Rec. Church of Betty : Tripping with Wanda (US,2002)**° * Fang Rec. Church of Betty : Revenge of the hippies (US,2003)° The least work for me, because the Indian influences are less, the singer is much more on the front. Review with links at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html * Music & Words A rough guide to Bollywood legends : Asha Bhosle (IND,1956-1990)**° Tr.12, "Karle Pyar Karle" 6 min (1969)97 For Bollywood legendary voices two female voices come in mind easily, like Lata Mangeskar, one of the most known female voice of Indian movie. She kept her "child-like" voice intact throughout all her career. Her name is even in the Guinness book of records of having recorded most songs in recording history. This is followed by Asha Bhosle who performed some variation in emotions, with a sweet erotic aspect too when she talks and sings in one song. With contribution of her voice also rock'n roll and other influences were adapted in filmusic songs. This release gives an overview over some different aspects and sounds in her career, and provides some good; examples. For the western listener looking for the best crossovers that are able to stand on its own, not all tracks from Asha Bhosle will appeal as much. This compilation has several interesting, but also a few more outstanding tracks. I choose at first two tracks for airplay, with one from 85, because some of the newer tracks sound interesting too. But at the end I preferred to take another song from her from another, better LP I have : * Ace Rec. Various Artists : Golden Voices vol 3 (1949-1972)**** Tr.4, Asha Boshle : "Aaj Ki Raat" 8 min 105 Beautiful late 50's, early 60's styled orchestrated erotic rock'n roll love song. My favourite Indian movie voices, and favourite track. Very good compilation from Indian movies. One of the best in the series. * Proverus Rec. The Pillbugs : the 3-dimensional in-popcycle dream (US,2003)***° Tr.1, "3D montage" 2 min Tr.13,"3D theme" 7 min Tr.7, "Friend for the day" 2 min 11 114 Great sixties band from now with powerful Beatle-esque arrangements. Review and links : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog2.html * Proverus Rec. The Pillbugs (US,2003)**** CD1, Tr.1, "Thou doth warm me (like the sun)" 3 min Tr.2, "I could never find a bird" 3 min Tr.3, "Black Sombrero" 2 min Tr.9, "Captain Nemo" 3 min 11 122 CD2, Tr.12, "Illuminating Drink" 15 min 18 144 Partly this is a powerful Beatle-esque music, which goes as well some steps further to the 70's, with perfect & powerful production sound. This is how the Beatles could have sounded with some early 70's (progressive) influences (if they would have been open to that). Highly recommended ! Review and links : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog2.html * Vertigo/Repert. Ramases : Space Hymns (1971)***° Tr.7, "Molecular Delusions" 4 min 150 Original semi-commune pop with Indian, hippie and other influences. This is a Wonderful track with sitar and semi)Indian singing. All accompanying band members formed 10CC afterwards.
