"Psyche van Het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen Playlist : more intuitive-experimental guitarists, raga guitarists & post-Takoma guitarists (with mostly extremely limited releases) : 2005-3-30 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MATTHEW DE GENNARO * Epigonic Rec. Matthew De Gennaro : Under The Sun (NZ,2002)**° Tr.1, "Arrow Bold" 4 min Acoustic guitar improvisation and song with a semi-electronic wave on the background. The complete release is atmospheric & moody acoustic experimental. * Epigonic Rec. Matthew De Gennaro : "Words and Music by" (NZ,2003)***° Tr.1, "Fantazia in G major" 4 min Tr.8, "Henning Christiansen" 6 min (shortened) Tr.9, "A new light" 5 min (shortened) This release has a bit more focus on the guitar playing, especially in the fantasias. It's another atmospheric acoustic album mixed with some loops. Second chosen track are beautiful two-note organ sounds mixed with environmental sounds that have their own rhythm, fitting perfectly with the organ. Last track is a gentle song with fingerpicking guitar & harmonium. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview8.html#anchor_18 * Epigonic Rec. Matthew De Gennaro : Humbled Down (NZ,2004)***° Tr.1, "Candlestick maker" 9 min Tr.6, "Cathedral Square" 5 min Tr.7, "Albion" 3 min Even more attention to clearer structures. Here's also full attention on the guitar playing, sometimes mixed with organ or other sounds. Third track, "Natura" on this album is a retake of "A new Light" of the former album. "Cathedral Square" is an acoustic fingerpicking guitar track mixed with banjo. "Albion" is acoustic guitar fingerpicking with crickets and other quiet sounds in the background. The best and most "professional" album so far. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar4.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Digital Industries Hush Arbors : Under bent limb trees (US,2005)**°° Tr.1, "Spirits over mt.Blanca" 3 min Tr.2, "The forst we've been" 5 min 8 Tr.3, "Woody Reel" 4 min Tr.4, "Where the black bear hides in the sky" 4 min 15 "Spirits over mt.Blanca" is a mountain Wind blowing in a mike mixed with a one tone high peak tone. A track of beautiful minimalism, in essence comparable to "Nature" or "A new Light" from Matthew De Gennaro. Most tracks are over-gentle soft songs accompanied by acoustic guitar, banjo etc. I had to listen a few times because it's very far laid back music, but it has its own specific beauty and subtleness. I'm still not sure how much it works from the beginning to end. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview8.html * Digital Industries Ben Reynolds: Oh Joy and beyond (UK,2004)***° Tr.1, "My hand and the universe" 5 min Tr.2, "One Time Thy Pyramids" 11 min Tr.3, "Drop of Lake" 5 min 21 92 Nice raga-guitar play, with flute, drone and one good loop-like droning experimental track, and one fingerpicking instrumental. Fine release somewhat in the vein of Six Organs Of Admittance,... Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview8.html#anchor_38 * Cel.Psi Phen. James Blackshaw : Celeste (UK,2004)***°' Tr.1, "Celeste, part 1" 15 min -71 Great raga-guitar piece equal comparable to Jack Rose for instance. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar4.html * Digital Industries James Blackshaw : Lost prayers & motionless dancers (UK,2004)***°' Tr.1, "Lost prayers & motionless dancers" 34 min Fragment : Part 1b,2 (for about 21 min) One 34 track with harmonium, radio, bells, cymbal, floor tom, 12 string guitar. Because of the harmonium it sounds a bit like an ancient Sufi ritual. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview8.html#anchor_22 * Drag City Six Organs Of Admittance : School of the flower (US,2005)***°' Tr.1, "Eight Cognition" 6 min Tr.2, "All you've left" 2 min Tr.6, "School of the flower" 13 min 21 -114 One of the calmest guitar-based releases of SOOA. 6th track is, different as before, with a looped theme on two guitars with heavy jazzy drums, and then great heavy distorted electric guitar. Great change ! Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview8.html#anchor_20 * Ptol.Terrascope VA : pot winter 2004/2005 (var,2004)*°°° Tr.3, Jack Rose : «Box Of Pine» 9 min 123 (live in Norman, Oklahoma) A quite interesting compilation for a free CD, especially the Jack Rose & One Ensemble & In Gowan Ring track are already worth it. This is a brilliant performance. The winter magazine covers various PVHF-related names (including interviews with Sharron Kraus, In Gowan Ring, Jack Rose). Info on Ptolomaic Terrascope magazine : http://www.terrascope.org/ The The One Ensemble of Daniel Padden track will be airplayed next week. * Mutant Music Paul Metzger : solo (US,2005)****° Track 1 (the raga-piece) 17 min 140 Fantastic; incredible raga-piece in original style with advanced sitar-like sound of guitar, still with wide variety in possibilities in sounds. Second side is more avant-experimental. * Strange Attr. Harris Newman : Accidents with nature and each other (US,2005)****° Tr.5, "Lake Shore Drive" 7 min (slightly shortened) Tr.1, "The butcher's Block" 6 min 150 Track 1 is in Fahey/early Kottke tradition, track 5 is different, with additional droning strings to the picking. Here Bruce Cawdron from 'Godspeed You!Black Emperor' participates.
