Radioshow "PVHF" on radio Centraal, Antwerp : 2007-11-10 : 800-1000 PM especially singer-songwriters for new folk / acidfolk / folkpsych related reissues and releases -underlying theme is also “lost voices”- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- starting in a bit darker territories… * Little Somebody A.Lixivia (F,2007)*** Tr.5, “Le Plus Somptueux des Palais” 4 min From this neo-folk item I chose this nice sad song with telephone-signal kind of tones on keyboards with acoustic guitar strumming. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview14.html#anchor_303 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- * Time-Lag Sand Snowman : Obsessive Creatures (UK,2007)**** New review of this artist. I airplayed a track of his last time. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview17.html#anchor_497 * Locust 230 Divisadero (MON/UK,2007)***’ Dark vocals with moody soundtrack-like instrumental music, sounding often a bit like Use Of Ashes or a more acoustic Legendary Pink Dots. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog9B.html#anchor_144 * Beta-Lact.Ring Christus And The Cosmonaughts : From Atop This Hill (US,2007)***’ Also this can be compared to Legendary Pink Dots, but more electronic. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog9B.html#anchor_141 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- * Silber Rec. Origami Arktika : Trollebotn (N,2007)*** Tr.1, “Anne Sit Heime” 10 min (shortened to 8 min) Improvisation on dark, very old, dying out Nordic folk songs. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/experimental.html#anchor_432 * A Silent Place Gianluca Becuzzi, Fabio Orsi : Muddy Speaking Ghosts through my machines (I,2006)***° Tr.1, “North of Me” (at midday) 6 min -18 A Silent Place mostly is a semi-acoustic soundscape-experimental music label. This release with the adaptation of old folk song recordings fit well with the murder ballads from Martyn Bates. In this case it fits greatly with Origami Arktika too. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog19.html#anchor_177 * Hand/Eye Robin Crutchfield : For our Friends in the Enchanted Otherworld (US,2007)***°’ Tr.4, “Finding our Woodland Way” 2 min Tr.7, “The Birds I know” 1 min Tr.10,”Did I imagine that?” 2 min 5 -23 Compilation of assembled minimal pieces dedicated on the land of the elves and the forest creatures. This sounds like a soundtrack dance for these creatures. Most of it are pieces with harp lead, but I chose mostly some other tracks. These chosen tracks are brilliant miniatures. A work which I think also for Robin will grow deeper and receive more images with the years. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview16.html#anchor_447 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- * Locust The Family Elan : Stare Of Dawn (UK,2007)***°' Tr.2, “Monumental” 7 min -30 Acidfolk album that sounds almost like a collection of ritual medieval dances. It is inspired by some Middle Eastern examples. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview20.html#anchor_680 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- guitar… * Locust Paul Metzger: Deliverance (US,2007)****° Tr.3, “Deliverance” 2310->3107 7 min -37 Short fragment of a brilliant raga interpretation on his experimental primitive 21-string banjo. You can hear some finger clacking rhythms to the string pickings. These are the last minutes on the CD after many more meditations mostly on 21 string banjo. Going immediately to this part misses a bit the careful building up of this. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar5.html#anchor_142 * Mountain Jean Bosco Mwenda : Mwenda wa Bayeke African Guitar Legend / The Studio Album (CO,1988)***°’ Tr.10, “Masanga” 4 min -41 Reissue of this last recording of this African guitar legend. This is the only instrumental. The ‘African guitar’ book mentions that William Byrd (Rennaissance)’s piece “the bells” “bears a distinct affinity to the ‘masanga’ theme. This 1952 composition was chosen out of 600 recordings with an Osborn Awards for the best African music of the year. It is a song of praise. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar10.html#anchor_283 * St.Grossm.Guit.W. John Low : African Fingerstyle Guitar (US,2007)***’ Guitar pieces of Jean Bosco and other greats are taught on this instruction DVD. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar10.html#anchor_288 * St.Grossm.Guit.W. V.A. : African Guitar (VAR,rec.1966-1993,pub.2003)***** Historical recordings of Mwenda Jean Bosco, Faustino Okello, Pierre Gwa, Daniel Kachamba, Moya Aliya Malamusi, Erasmus N.Ndrara and Mose Yotamu : African guitarists. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar10.html#anchor_285 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- * Secretely Canadian Bobb Trimble : Iron Curtain Innocence (UK,1982)***°° Tr.7, “Through my eyes”(hopeless as hell) 6 min-47 Finally an official reissue of this weird, technical and also emotionally rich “progressive” singer-songwriter album. ‘Harvest of Dreams’ is the best starter of both albums. Especially this album reveals the vision of an outsider for this even stranger world. No doubt, Bobb has a very beautiful voice. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue.html#anchor_62 * Secretely Canadian Bobb Trimble : Harvest of Dreams (UK,1982)***°° Tr.11, “Life is like circle” 5 min -52 I airplayed the first reissue from Fallout, but this is the first cooperative prepared reissue of this album. I chose the great bonus demo track with fuzz guitar, amplified guitar and some electronica. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue.html#anchor_41 * Fallout Genesis : In The Beginning (US,1968)***°° (Tr.3, “Gloomy Sunday” 5 min -57) Reissued already some time ago, but this is a great folkpsych/psych album with Jefferson Airplane associations. This is a great orchestrated ballad, worth alone the purchase. The very long psychedelic track is essential as well. (I forgot this CD at home, so it wasn’t played in the actual Radioshow ; instead I described the item and song). Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/psych.html#anchor_211 * Fallout Tommy Roe : Phantasy (US,1967)***' Much more light hearted fantasies in sunshine psych pop style. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/sixties3.html#anchor_203 * Fallout Leonda : Woman In The Sun (US,1969)**°° Tr.7, “Peace and Pipes” 7 min -64 Bluesy, often soulful rock and just a few native Indian inspirations (especially on this chosen track) on this song driven album. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue5.html#anchor_174 * Fallout Kathy Smith : Some Songs I've Saved (US,1970)***’ Tr.7, “Russel:Gemeni II” 4 min Tr.8, “If I could touch you” 3 min 7 -71 Another singer from the same area of hippie female folk / rock song inspiration. This is her professionally well produced and arranged debut. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue5.html#anchor_173 * Stormy Forest Kathy Smith : 2 (US,1971)**°°(not reissued yet)- Mention : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue5.html#anchor_173 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- * A Silent Place Nick Castro & The Young Elders : A Day Without Disaster -10" EP- (US,2007)***°' Tr.4, “Sirens” 4 min -75 New troubadour folk, new mini-album of Nick Castro, soon on cd as well. (very unfortunately I forgot this CD at home, so it wasn’t played in the actual Radioshow, but I described the item thoroughly). Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview7.html#anchor_77 * Shadoks Rec. Paul Adolphus : The Dawn Wind (JAP,1969)****° Tr.5,“It’s Raining” 3 min Tr.6,“The New Year” 7 min 10 -85 A great guitar piece, and a meditative piece. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue5.html#anchor_182 * Guerssen Pererin : Tirion Dir (WA,1982?)***’ Tr.2, “O Ferch Y Ffair” 5 min -90 Reissue of the third album of Perrerin, not much different from the previous albums. This Welsh style is rather different from UK folk examples. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/reissue.html#anchor_62 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- to singer-songwriters.. * Language Of Stone Orion Rigel Dommisse : What I want from you is sweet (US,2007)****' Tr.1, “Fake yer death” 4 min -94 Brilliant release, songs, arrangements..everything. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-21.html#anchor_850 * Timbreland Nancy Elizabeth : Battle and Victory (UK,2007)**** Tr.2, “I used to try” 4 min -98 Another great talent, great arrangements. Recommended. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-10.html#anchor_476 * Bluesanct Caethua : Village Of The Damned (US,2007)*** A soundtrack and songs compiled as if being an expression of a haunted voice describing the house itself. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-21.html#anchor_846 * Gnomonsong Jana Hunter : Carrion -EP- (US,2007)*** With a starting point of slightly depressed, the energy renews here a bit, but this is still not as splendid as the other examples in the show. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-20.html#anchor_814 * Cosmos V.A.: We Are All Circling The Stars (UK/IR/US,2007)***° CD1, Tr.4, Francis Conway : “Since I laid my burden down” 3 min Tr.6, Beth Jeans Houghton : “Milk Bottles” 3 min Tr.12, David Thomas Broughton : “One Day” (live) 3 min CD2, Tr.1, Hélčne Renaut : “Bumblebee” 3 min Tr.14, Benjamin Wetherill : “The Cruel Ship’s Captain” 3 min 15 113 One of the best singer-songwriter compilations I have heard in a long time. Here are some of my favourites. Last track fits perfectly with the musical themes in the beginning of the show. This track sounds like an experimental ghost version of “St.James Infirmary”. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-21.html#anchor_874 * Contraphonic The Lesser Birds Of Paradise : Space Between (IR,2007)***° Tr.1, “My Refrain” 4 min -117 Strange song arrangement with singing saw. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-20.html#anchor_833 * preview release Stephanie Hladowski : The Third Scatter (UK,1997)***° Tr.3, “Andrew Lambie” 8 min (shortened to 3 min ?) Fine folk interpretation, of tradition and improvisation. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/folk.html#anchor_108 If time left : * Language Of Stone Orion Rigel Dommisse : What I want from you is sweet (US,2007)***** Tr.3, “Simon sent for me” 3 min This release deserves more than one track to airplay..I could have airplayed all following tracks as well, if time had let me... Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-21.html#anchor_850 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- not enough airplay time for the next few items : * Nettwork Great Lake Swimmers : Ongiara (CAN,2007)***' Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-4.html#anchor_226 * demo Phantom Dog Beneath The Moon : demo (IRL/UK,2007)**°° The voice of songwriter group PDBTM fits well with Great Lake Swimmers, but this item has more arrangements. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-20.html#anchor_804 * Ta Music Tim Arnold : Another World (UK,2007)** * Static Caravan Serafina Steer : Cheap Demo Bad Science (UK,2007)**** Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-14.html#anchor_625 * Folkwit Pulco : Undersea Adventure (UK-WA,2005)***' Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-19.html#anchor_765 * Abaton Book Company Marianne Nowotnny : What Is She Doing ?
