Radioshow "PVHF" on radio Centraal, Antwerp : 2007-10-27 : 700-1000 PM!! PART 1 : new folk / acidfolk / folkpsych related reissues and releases (including some singer-songwriters that fit with this description) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * EM Tully : Sea Of Joy (AUS,1972)****' Tr.3, "Follow Me" 4 min Tr.7, "Thank You" 3 min Tr.8, "Syndrone" 7 min Tr.6, "I feel the sun" 6 min 20 Reissue of a recommended, very nice prog/psych & folkpsych album composed for a movie on the visual, sunshine side of surfing. Tully is a group which (since the second release) became related with rather experimental psychfolk group with record, Extradition, which release was reissued some years ago (on vinyl and cd). Even when playing no less than 4 tracks, this gives only just a glimpse on this rich album. First track is driven progressive 'sound-rich' Psychedelia. "Thank you" shows the beautiful voice of the singer. "Syndrone" experiments and improvises with sitar and violin, while the last part of it might remind a bit of Moondog. "I feel The Sun" compromises styles within a song, sung by a male singer this time, accompanied by piano. But there's also added a small intro of meditative experimenting acoustic music. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreviews2.html#anchor_29 * EM William Eaton : music by.. (US,1978)****' Tr.5, 1 min Tr.12, 4 min 5 -25 Not always with "normal" harmonies, this remains very meditative music on special attentively self-built & new experimental inventions of guitars. Both these tracks show the strangeness as well as the harmony core. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar9.html#anchor_275 * Kissing Spell Stone Angel : Circle Of Leaves (UK,2007)***° Tr.1, "The Promise-Prologue" 3 min Tr.2, "Candlemass" 3 min 6 -31 This is a slightly experimental beginning with bowls and spoken word. Of course you can expect real folk songs too. A strong opener on this very good new album of this long living Stone Breath group. Perhaps it's their best since their debut. It is related with a theatre piece score using folk themes. On track two Janes' voice shows her qualities. Webpage : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/MIDWINTER_STONEANGEL.html * Hand/Eye Stone Breath : Songs Of Moonlight And Rain (expanded edition) (US, 1995->1997,pub.2007)***°' Tr.5, "Perched upon the temple bell, the butterfly sleeps 3 min -34 Songs like funeral march meditations. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview4.html#anchor_93 * Bo'Weavil Sharron Kraus : Right Wantonly A-Mumming -a collection of seasonal songs and celebrations-(UK,2007)****' Tr.12, "All Hallows" 5 min -39 A collection of mostly self-penned "new traditionals" mixed with 4 traditionals, celebrative music on the festivities of the changing of the seasons. An album that made me appreciating folk music better. It is recorded with the cream of the Oxford folk scene. This is the strangest song. It fits for me with the upcoming festivity of 1st of November. PS. Sharron Kraus will come to Belgium in spring, together with Patalomeinon. A live session for PVHF is expected. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/folk.html#anchor_102 * Silber Origami Arktika : Trollebotn (N,2007)**° Improvisation on old Nordic folk songs relived on the place where they came to existence. Not sure if it will be able to get this some airplay some other time.. The style is a bit too different to list here, while its theme fitted perfectly. For the radioshow I just preferred to remain at this point in Britten.. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/experimental.html#anchor_432 * Cold Spring V.A. : John Barleycorn reborn : Dark Britannica -2CD- (UK,2007)*°°° -CD1: Tr.2, The Owl Service : "North Country Maid" 3 min Tr.3, The Story : "The Wicker Man" 3 min Tr.12,Pumajaw : "The Burning of Auchindoun" 6 min -CD2: Tr.6, Sand Snowman : "Stained Glass Morning" 6 min Tr.7, The A Lords : "Summerhouse" 6 min (shortened a bit) Tr.8, The Kitchen Cynics : "The Guidman's Ground" 5 min -29 -68 Compilation around the theme of John Barleycorn, compiled by Mark Coyle from the Woven Wheat Whispers folk download service. Listed are mostly folk, neofolk, but also some unknown medieval and hurdy gurdy groups, and also, a few more acidfolk related tracks,... This portion of an acid-folk related radio compilation of my own personal favourite choices I will name here, like a fourth part, "Compilation : "In the ashes". I left out the Charlotte Greig And Johan Asherton track "Lay the bent to the bonney Broom" mostly for reasons of time limitations. I must say that the groups I chose are also in general recommended for those interested in acid folk. Unfortunately Sand Snowman has no official release yet (except for some official downloads), and a lilted release on Timelag, which will be reviewed on my pages soon. The A Lords CD sadly has been sold out ; I haven't heard that one yet, but the group sounds promising. If it will be made available again, I promise a review. The singer on The Owl Service is Rachel Davies. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview20.html#anchor_653 & Wov.Wh.Whisp. V.A. : John Barleycorn reborn : Dark Britannica, part 3 : Rebirth -download-(UK,2007)*°°°' Actually a double CD worth of extra material, which people who buy the official album will be able to download as well. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview20.html#anchor_653 * Singing Knives Peril Hill : Scream at the Jackdaw, make him stop (UK,2005)**** Tr.1, "Siren" 4 min -72 Singer-songwriter related acidfolk on this promising small label, from which I will list and airplay more than this. A first track of this gentle group Peril Hill. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview20.html#anchor_661 * Contraphonic Joshua Marcus : Make / Believe (US,2007)**** Tr.1, "The Calm and the storm" 3 min -75 Unfortunately only airplay time for one track. I might choose another one in the next, s/sw related Radioshow. I have to mention The Lesser Birds Of Paradise which will be featured in the next singer/songwriter related show. This Joshua Marcus album is most related with the acidfolk section. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-20.html#anchor_823 * private/Teaspoon Mary Hampton : Book Two (UK,2007)***** Tr.3, "Pretty Polly" 6 min Tr.6, "Songs of Wandering Aengus" 5 min -11 -86 One of the most talented singers I discovered since long. There's a folk and literature association involved. Brilliant and beautiful and highly recommended. So far this is only a private CDR release. Also, this is the best "Pretty Polly" version I have heard ever. Her interpretations of literature, as well as her chamber-like arrangements are all a must discovering. Biggest tip of the year. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/folk3.html#anchor_87 * private/Teaspoon Mary Hampton : Book One (UK,2005)****° I wish I could show her brilliant "Eros" track too (Tr.5, 8 min), but airplay time is limited. I think the two tracks of book two will surely convince well. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/folk3.html#anchor_87 * demo Caroline Weeks : five songs (UK,2007)***** Tr.1, "Elegy" 6 min Tr.3, "Pity Me Not" 3 min 9 min -95 Another brilliant and highly recommended demo release of intimate beauty. You can hear nice touches of flute on "Elegy". Another one for labels to check out! Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-20.html#anchor_808 * Ahstern In Gowan Ring : Exists and Entrances -collected volumes I-IV- (2CD)(US,2007)****° CD2, Tr.4, Margie Weink & In Gowan Ring : "Roseship November" 4 min -98 I did airplay some tracks from CD1, but not from CD2 yet. Here Margie Weink (from Fern Knight/Eyesores/..) brilliantly takes over the role of Vasthti Bunyan. On this stage I will announce or explain how and when The In Gowan Ring live on air recording will be. It will presumable happen on the 26th. This might be directly live on air but not during this show, except when it can be arranged before or after. I am happy B'Eirth will be guest in my show a second time. The releases of Margie Weink under the name of Fern Knight also are highly recommended. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview19.html#anchor_588 * demo Cain Da Breth -3-track demo- (CZ,2007)****' Tr.1, "Moonlight Tune" 4 min Tr.2, "Blackbirds" 3 min Tr.3, "Moon Reflections" 3 min 10 -108 Promising 3-track demo of this mysteries-folk Czech band. The first track sounds rather happy, and this will sound a bit different from previous airplayed tracks. The tracks are just great in a different way. "Blackbirds" has a flavour of being a medieval ballad. I hope an official full release will see the light of day some day. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview20.html#anchor_649 * Singing Knives V.A. : Singing At The Moon (UK,2007)**°° Tr.3, Peril Hill : "Vapors in August" 6 min Tr.7, Feather Gatherers : "Leaves" 4 min Tr.8, Tau Emerald : "The Piano Key" 3 min -13 -120 Great compilation that gives an overview of this promising independent label. I assume that the One Ensemble of Daniel Padden made some choices too. Maybe I can airplay the One Ensemble of Daniel Padden track in some other show later, just like the Nalle track which I think was promising too, but a bit too weird or experimental for this show. This is the second track I play from Peril Hill. Feather Gatherers is a small recording project of Sharron Kraus with Jonathan Marshall. Still have no idea who he is. The label released a very nice single of this band with 2 tracks (see further down for the review link). The compilation is mostly experimental folk, but I chose the three best acid folk related songs for this show. Unfortunately I don't know Tau Emerald better yet. I can only say I like this instrumental very much. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview20.html#anchor_667 * Singing Knives The Feather Gatherers : Leaves/Tower At Bollingen -single- (UK,rec.2004)**** This is the single from the group (listed before). Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview20.html#anchor_673 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Only if time left (otherwise reserved for next Radioshow) * private Allysen Callery : Hopey (US,2007)**** Tr.12, "Pea Green Boat" 4 min Beautiful voice, well played guitar and fantastic subtle sound arrangements (arranged by Myles Baer -who also produced Marissa Nadler's first album). A nice poetic song to conclude with, if I have the chance... Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-21.html#anchor_842 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- PART 2 : extra hour broadcast : new psych & hard prog * September Gurls Smell Of Incense : Of Ullages and Dottles (N,2007)**** Tr.3, "Where Forlorn Sunsets flare and Fade" 11 min 15 Mellotron, sitar and ither melodic layers of arrangements of colourful, of fantasy-rich, partly folk-psychedelica, inspired by mostly old literature. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/psychfolkpopreview5.html#anchor_263 * Sulatron Annot Rühl : Lost In The Woods ***/ Who needs planes or time machines when there's music and daydreams ? (N,2007)***' Tr.17, "Sung By A Cactus" 3 min -18 What if a surf music influence, horror-roundabouts inspirations, Mexican mariachi, Pink Floyd and a simplified Anekdoten (the Scandinavian mellotron- driven rock band) were mixed in one release, you have an idea of the sounds of this group. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/norway.html#anchor_99 * Altrock Accordo dei Contrari : Kinesis (I,2007)***° Tr.2, "Meghiste Kinesis" 8 min -25 Often neo-progrock became to show more melody than intelligence. Altrock distinguish itself as a new label, because it shows groups wxith a wider scope also involving contemporary classical influences, jazzrock and perhaps even technical metal. This is their latest release of crafted contemporary sympho/neo-progrock. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/italy.html#anchor_256 * Elektrohasch Rotor : 3 (D,2007)**** Tr.1, "Auf's Maul?" 4 min 30 Great hard/progressive/stoner rock, some tracks are more progressive than others, others are more stoner hard rock, while including a psych influence, which makes it interesting. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog23.html#anchor_302 * Psycofonia Psicotropia : Grog -cd-/ Live DVD (SP,2007)***° Second album of this progressive hard rock band from Spain, a private release. You can hear also a few elements from jazz and rock. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/spain.html#anchor_22 * Transubstans Graveyard (S,2007)**° Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog23.html#anchor_297 * Rise Above Witchcraft : The Alchemist (S,2007)**** Tr.3, "Leva" 5 min 35 Fine Old School hard rock. One of the better new bands of the genre. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog23.html#anchor_290 * Shadoks Witch : Lazy Bones!! (ZAM,1974)***° Tr.1, "Black Tears" 6 min Tr.6, "Havoc" 5 min It's a good opportunity to show some great old hardrock, but this time from an unexpected country : from Zambia, 70s Africa. This comes from an LP reissue of a great, classic Zambian fuzz-hardrock album. Zambia in those days imported lots of fuzz boxes. Is this band the top of the Iceberg ? Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/africa4.html#anchor_252 * Vendlus Grayceon (US,2007)***° Tr.2, "Song For You" 4 min New hard chamber-progressive with metal influence. I wanted to airplay the long track before, but I accidentally airplayed the second track, which fitted quiet well with the show. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog23.html#anchor_291 * Web Of Mimicry Ur : Personnae : Halloween / The Electromagnetic Azoth : The Left Hand Of Nothingness (US,2007)**** Tr.A, Ur : "Halloween" 5 min -50 Tr.B, The EA : "The left hand.." 4 min (fragment) Secret Chiefs 3 related new single. Next radioshow is about dark ambient music and such, so it was a good outro, preparing us also on the idea of the upcoming Halloween festivities. First track has some dark surf influences, while the B- side sounds more like a soundtrack.
