Radioshow "PVHF" on radio Centraal, Antwerp : 2007-09-15 : 800-1000 PM Chamber-like associations -> weird jazz related albums weirdness in combination with World crossovers -> North African guitar music. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Home Aurélia : Hypnogol (B,2007)***° Tr.9, “La Dance de Zhao” 7 min Chamber-like imaginative drifting boat journey of a musician. Will be performed live on a travelling theatre boat. This outstanding original track is a fantasy on what is supposed to be Chinese music, changing into a moody improvisation on guitar with voice and textured percussive arrangement and violin. I will airplay another, sitar/chamber/middle eastern track, in next radio show. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/belgium2.html#anchor_117 * Home Klezmic Zirkus : Vitamine K (B,2007)***’ A mix of Klezmer with circus-music. No real outstanding tracks and shortage of time won’t let me to airplay any track. The album will be mentioned. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/belgium3.html#anchor_131 * Cuneiform Alec K.Redfearn and the Eyesores : The Blind Spot (US,2007)****’ Tr.5, “The Radioator Hymn” 4 min -11 A very strong vocal arrangement can be heard on this track chamberrock with a theatrical flavour. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog17.html#anchor_231 * Lowlands Aranis : II (B,2007)***° Tr.6, “Moja” 5 min -16 In this new release there are many, emotionally often rather loosely directing, tango-drifts & minimalist elements in their chamber music-rock. I think this great track works best for taking out of the musical concept. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/belgium2.html#anchor_118 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Cr.CircleColl. 9 On Bali : Sanur (US,2007)*°°° Tr.1, (fragment) -> 246… 3 -20 Great opening section for a bit confusing mix of Balinese music with prog, home made symphonic and pop/rock. This intro was done by Jim Molina. Review on http://progressive.homestead.com/prog11B.html#anchor_165 * M.Hua's Katsu Academie of Farside (AOFS) : Windig Notes (2004)**°°’ Tr.5, “Soil Of The New Sun” 15 min -35 Really unusual, almost taboo breaking mix of progrock, symphonic rock, avant- notes, Indonesian gamelan tunes, mainstream pop, Indonesian pop and jazz !! Track 3 was another option for airplay, but this 5th track for me still is the most successful and most unique track of this strange adventure. It is also my favourite track of both releases. The singer now sings with a slightly jazzy flavour. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDOREVIEWS.html#anchor_58 * M.Hua's Katsu Academie of Farside (AOFS) : Bradakoom!!! (2006)***° A more consistent mix and sound of new-progressive. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDOREVIEWS.html#anchor_66 * Moonjune simakDialog : Patahan (INDO,2005)***’ One of the more interesting jazz groups from Inonesia. Their latest album now is reissued on a label that should make this available for the rest of the world. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/jazz.html#anchor_147 * Dusty Groove Doroty Ashby : The Rubaiyat of..” (US,1970)***°’ Tr.1, “Myself when young” 6 min -41 Tr.7, “Joyful grass & grape” 3 min 9-44 Funk, harp, koto, grooves, orchestrations, soul, jazz, eastern touches, spiritual and ethnic references, etc. all are mixed in a trans-cultural blending jazz style. Arranged and conducted by Richard Evans. Great voice and arrangements. This harpist and singer shows more variety compared to (the great) Alice Coltraine. Links on http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/WORLDfusion.html#anchor_78 * BBE V.A. : King Britt presents 'The Cosmic Lounge', volume one, "A Spiritual Quest For Higher Sound" (US,1970-1977,pub.2007)***° Compilation on the “weird” side of “cosmic” jazz explorations. Listens best from start to finish, because when taking the tracks out you realize much more the odd nature of these tracks. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/cosmicjazz.html#anchor_142 * Akatzia Alissid Jazz! : Tapes On Trees (RU,2006)**** Tr.6, “When you paint me slow” 5 min -50 Jazz mixed with a touch of trip-hop rhythms here and there. This moody track is with Rhodes, bass, drums, sax and female vocals. Imagine jazzy piano on various other tracks and you have some idea of the general sound on this album. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog12.html#anchor_142 * Akatzia Alissid Jazz & Nikolay Oorzhak : Oorjazz (RU,2007)***’ Tr.3, “Hunter” 11 min (fragment) 5 min ?? -55 Partly improvised cooperation with throat singer & Tuvan shaman Nikolay Oorzhak. Also didgeridoo has been used. The music is more intense and includes some organic movements. This is a rather “aggressive” track in the vocal parts, with a powerful, almost screaming power, the shamanic power of the “hunter”. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/WORLDfusion.html#anchor_77 * Repertoire Graham Bond : Holy Magick (US,1970+1971)***°° Tr.1, “Holy Magick” 23 min -78 A great magick-provoking spiritual progjazz track, (using elements of existing Western magic rituals from Golden Down,..) with Hammond organ & vocal drives, and later on great sax, different from previous Graham Bond’s works with R&B associations. Those who feel spirits tickling right now, must be glad I don’t add anything from the next albums full of voodoo fantasies. This limited reissue (3000 copies) is recommended because it contains the single which very much completes the album. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/cosmicjazz.html#anchor_143 * Repertoire Exuma, the Obeah Man, the junk band and Daddy Ya Ya : Exuma (BH/US,1970)**’’’ * Repertoire Exuma : II (BH/US,1970)**’’’ Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/cosmicjazz.html#anchor_147 A singer-songwriter with theatrical expressions using elements of the voodoo culture from the Bahamas. This surely was and still is something new. I don’t consider this as very accessible music at all, but there does not exist much like this. However there’s a primitive aggressive expression to it as well, which didn’t make me this time wanting to airplay any specific track in this Radioshow, but I’d like to mention it.. A better starter for the same associations is Dr.John’s Gris Gris. PS. Recently I also discovered another artist influenced by voodoo : Steve Tallis and The Holy Ghosts : http://www.myspace.com/stevetallisandtheholyghosts Instead of going more weird I will go back to earth and the jazz genre. * Moonjune Elton Dean & The Wrong Object : The unbelievable Truth (UK/B,rec.2005,pub.2007)**** Tr.1, “Seven For Lee” 13 min -91 Great cooperation of Elton Dean with this fine Belgium jazz band. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/softmachine2.html#anchor_52 * Moonjune Hugh Hopper, Simon Picard, Steve Franklin, Charles Hayward : Numero D'Vol (UK,2007)***’ More improvised album, also from the same label. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/softmachine2.html#anchor_53 * Moonjune Soft Machine Legacy : Steam (UK,2007)***’ The new tenor sax player in the group proves the group is able to continue successfully. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/softmachine2.html#anchor_54 * Gateway Special Venture : Twice (DK,rec.1999-2000,pub.2007)***’ Fusion guitar based smooth jazzrock album. Maybe I will still airplay it later. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/FUSION2.html#anchor_75 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Cult.& Res. Desert Rebel : (NI/F,2007)**°’ Copperation of French musicians with one of the forerunners of the Touareg guitar movement. The original sound is changed through this cooperation. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Africa.html#anchor_236 * Cult.& Res. Desert Rebel : Ishumars les Rockers oubliés du Desert -dvd + cd (NI/F,2007)***°+**° Tr.4, «Ghai Imidrai Imageren» 5 min -96 Documentary on the backgrounds of the political problems of recognising Touaregs as worthy citizens, and the guitar music that lived with this. A group of French musicians started to cooperate and play with Abdallah Oumbadougou and his group. The bonus CD documents what happened between them, and in studio, when working on the music. The best tracks for me are often those by the Touareg group without much intermission, but contradictory also the more heavy rocking live tracks, which were only admitted as a live video recording on the DVD. This is a complaint song track on electrified guitar without much addition. The same track has a great different rock version on the DVD, but unfortunately I am not able to airplay this version, which is only on dvd. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Africa.html#anchor_236 * Sublime Freq. Group Inerane : Guitars from Agadez (NI,rec.2004 & 2007)**°’ Side B,track 5, “Kamu Talyat” 4 min -100 Another example of electric guitar music from Touareg origin. When taking the tracks out separately I realize there’s a certain simplicity and directness in them, which works best when taking the time to customize with them. This track works I think best, when taken out of the context. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Africa.html#anchor_230 * Sublime Freq. Group Doueh : Guitar Music from the Western Sahara (WS,pub.2006)**°°’ Side A,Tr.3, “Tirara” 5 min Side B,Tr.3, “Sabah Lala” 5 min 10 -110 Previous release by the label of Western Sahara electric guitar music. The second track’s vocals are almost in an Indian way. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Africa.html#anchor_225 * Chris Editions Chrissy Zebby Tembo & Ngozi Family : My Ancestors (ZAM,70s)***° Tr.2, “Trouble Maker” 3 min -113 Garage-song driven fuzzpsych. Finally reissued on LP, a limited edition, bootleg most probably. I heard other tracks from the group which were also interesting, but no one in Zambia seemed to be interested in reissuing almost any of these old tracks of the group. Later the group played the more common and popular Afro styles. (Anyhow, I proved with the last few examples there is much more in Africa than just “Afro” styles).
