Radioshow “PVHF” on radio Centraal, Antwerp : 2007-01-20 : 800-1000 PM INDIAN AND OTHER WORLD INFLUENCES (WITH MOSTLY URBAN TOUCHES) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- * Holy Mountain Daniel (Arcus Incus Ululat) Higgs, Interdimensional Song-Seamstress : Ancestral Songs (US,2006)***°° Tr.4, “Are you of the body ?” 12 min I promised a second track from this heretic artist last radioshow. This is a masterly interpretation like semi-Indian music, of an experimental overtone- drone, that builds itself up like new music-raga, until a raga-guitar improvisation sets a new tone, bringing the experimental drone on the background. A brilliant interpretation. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview16.html#anchor_422 * private Teed Rockwell : Hindustani Ragas (US,2006)**** Tr.2, 2 min Hindustani Raga player on Touchstyle Fretboard. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar8.html#anchor_211 * private Dave Cipriani : America and other faraway places (US,2004)***° Tr.1, “Baba” 4 min Where John Fahey started to explore Indian music measures after blues and folk, Dave Cipriani first studied Indian music, and now more explores the Fahey territories. This guitar track, played on the Indian Classical Guitar, is more clearly inspired by Indian music. Dave also plays with the (Indian) jazzfusion band Satabdi Express (see further down). Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar8.html#anchor_209 * demo Aesh : 5-track EP (F,2006)***° Tr.2, “Frère” 6 min Tr.4, “Lion” 6 min Very good interpretation of Indian music into groovy & rhythmic singer- songwriting. The singer, Celine Wadier, studied Druphad singing. What sounds like a nice electric guitar, is in fact sarod with effect. The track are sung in a combination of French and English. The album is just released and is now available on cd-baby. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/INDIVOICE.html#anchor_22 * Elsewhen Loop Guru : Bathtime with (UK,2005)*** Tr.3, “Devotion n°1” 9 min (->6 min) Simple, Trance-Indian flavoured inspirations. This track is with a female singer who sings Indian style. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIABEATS.html#anchor_130 * Ricituno Franco Baggiani : Santur (I,2006)**’ Tr.1, “After the jazz” 5 min (faded out) Jazz-improvisation trumpetist who uses some Indian flavours and groovy electronic beats. This track is breakbeat acid jazz with an Indian flavour and jazz trumpet. Some of the electronic beats could have got a bit more dynamic production ideas but this is a string track. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIABEATS.html#anchor_136 * Guerilla V.A. : Sitar Beat! Indian style heavy funk vol.1 (IND,F,pub.2006)***° Good to mention perhaps that the fine LP compilations of good early sitar beats are now compiled on one CD. For this particular style it is a very good compilation ! Short review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIABEATS.html#anchor_141 * demo K.P.E.Fusion Project : 4-track demo (Ö/S,2006)***' Tr.2, “Piloo Dhun” 6 min Nice Trance-Indian Fusion project between a Trance and classical Raga performance group. They seem to have very good looking lightshows during their live improvisations. Great bass here, spacy effects, electronic & tabla beats & classical sitar. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIABEATS.html#anchor_147 * Home Jugalbandi Trio : Brindiban (B/IND,2006)***° Tr.6, “Puja” 7 min Belgian group which improved their sound since their previous CD, (and is more The cooperative jugalbandi, as well as a unity) partly because the pianist takes some more rhythmical (jazz-driven- freedom. This is jazz-piano, flute, tabla and tampura. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/indojazzreview2.html#anchor_154 * demo Satabdi Express : Rough mixes (US,2006)**** Tr.4, “Norweghian Mood” 10 min (->8 min) Jazz Group, with Dave Cipriani, who takes them into Indian themes and styles wuth sitar more often. This is a kind of raga-improvisation on this known Beatles song, with the song still there, while bass and drums are more typical jazz styled. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/indojazzreview2.html#anchor_156 * demo Lele Lele : 7-track demo (S/BULG/IND,2006)****° Tr.1, “Like a donkey on an upslope” 5 min Tr.3, “Don’t worry about them money (they come rollin’)” 7 min Tr.4, “Tejka” 12 min (-> 5 min) This is a brilliant and unique fusion and crossover between Bulgarian (brass driven) folk and Indian music ! A must, but this is not released yet, so labels ??? The singer in last track sings more often “lele lele” but also “koko koko” and “tididi”. Yje sitar player is from the KPE Fusion Project, airplayed earlier. The forgotten part of the trail from Indian origins in gypsy music. Compared to the serious flamenco, this is real fun ! A few loose joints makes the fun even stronger. The group is based in Sweden. They won an important folk price in Bulgaria ! Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIAWORLD.html#anchor_76 * Baykus Gevende : Ev (TÜ,2006)****' Tr.1, “Celik Comak” 4 min Tr.3, “Nem” 7 min One of the best and most perfect Turkish releases of the last few years. The first track has some Balkan brass influence (besides some Indian influences later on) and is a splendid rockfusion, with very good composition. Second track is a more “classical” composed composition into rock, but then with other elements as well. The band just returned from Iran, India, Nepal, Pakistan where they recorded a documentary which is almost edited. Their next album will feature some audio from these travels. Review and info on : http://progressive.homestead.com/gevende.html * Mensch Fizzé/Dizzi : Kulu / Manoeuvres (CH/..,1980-1985/1987;comp.1996)**** Tr.5, “Cuisine” 4 min Tr.8, “Mensch” Tr.9, “Un Peu d’air” 3 min Tr.20,“Mensch medley” 1 min Acoustic World Music Fusion mixed with more experimental approaches. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/World.html#anchor_14 * Mensch Peeni Waali vs Schildpatt : "Sha" (CH/..,2006)**°° Tr.1, “Der mit dem Derwisch tantzt –radio edit- 5 min Acoustic World Music Fusion but also some reaggea in the mix.. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/World.html#anchor_5 * Mensch Peeni Waali : The Eve of... -final version- (CH/..,2000)*°° Tr.8, “Colarace” Much more reaggea & ska in this compilation. It was better not to miss the great Afro-statement, with santur and harmonica improvisation, with voice by Taj Mahal and some childs. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/World.html#anchor_5 * Onde Spirale Daniel Bouliane : Tagayet (CAN,2006)**° Filmmusic with African flavour. Well done, and enjoyable, but still a bit too mainstream for my show. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/BLACKSPIRIT.html#anchor_32 * Ozella Karl Seglem : Urbs (N,2007)**** Tr.1, “Urbs” 4 min Tr.9, “Fossil” 10 min (->3 min) Powerful sounds of urban and acoustic folk-jazz fusion, lead by goat horn and sax with electronica mostly. A more heavy fragment. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/FUSION.html#anchor_84 * Ozella Guido Ponzini : Twilight Town (I,2006)**** Tr.1, “Twilight Town” 4 min Talented stick-player and bass guitarist. This fusion track with a special world flavour is done in cooperation with Chinese flutist Guo Yue. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/FUSION2.html#anchor_69 Outro : * Ozella Streif : Nordic Winter (N,2006)**°' Tr.1, “Estlandsk Vuggevise” 7 min (fragment) Moody fusion track with leading wind instruments. The middle tracks on the album are different.
