V.A. : Thai Pop Spectacular (THAI,rec.1960s-1980s,pub.2007)***°’ Tr.5, Johnny Guitar : “Dance of the Ngeo” 3 min Tr.6, Chailai Chaiyata & Sawanee Patana : “you should die by bullets” 4 min This compilation tends to be a resource on pop music like other labels used to document folk music. You can notice in some tracks the influence of disco, amongst other things that became part of Thai pop inspirations. Two very original moments on the album. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/THAILAND.html#anchor_75 * Sublime Freq. V.A. : Molam : Thai Country Groove from Isan vol.2 (CD,pub.2007)***’ Tr.2, Polatnoi Songsim : “I love Thai films” 4 min -8 The Isan area (a part that used to be Laos but is Thailand now) has its own specific and unique style mix. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/THAILAND.html#anchor_74 * Rising Falcon Greg Cahill : "The Golden Voice" DVD (CAM,2007)***’ There was supposed to happen an interview on the movie, but it was a bad timing for the maker to have a direct call. Instead I reviewed the movie shortly and played two tracks from Ros Sereysothea. The movie is about the time of changes in Cambodia and how the singer could have experienced this. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/CAMBODIA.html#anchor_79 - Kmer Rocks V.A. : Cambodia Rocks volume II (CAM,160s-70s)***°° Tr.2, Ros Sereysothea : “I wish you love me” 3 min Tr.12, Ros Sereysothea :“Monkey Dancing Monkey” 3 min See http://progressive.homestead.com/CAMBODIA.html#anchor_54 * Sublime Freq. V.A. : Folk and Pop music of Myanmar (Burma) vol. 3 : Music of Nat Pwe (BU,2007)***' Music of this folklore festival to remember the dead with related ghosts and trance-like communications with their personalities to solve certain issues during this festivity. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/BURMA.html#anchor_76 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- INDIA : * Fallout Ananda Shankar : Missing You/ A musical discovery Of India (IND,1977/1978)*****/****’ Tr.1, “Missing you” 5 min -22 Beautiful and colourful orchestrated album with emotional richness. “Missing you” was dedicated to his father, who was a dancer. Ananda Shankar managed best of all Indian composers and musician to fuse east & west. These two well fitting works show him as a composer, with the same kind of blends. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/INDIAPSYCH.html#anchor_50 * Fallout Ananda Shankar and his Orchestra : 2001 (IND,1984)****’ Tr.3, “The Voyageur” 5 min 27 A trip to the future, a date which he was not going to survive. By this time Ananda was recognised and famous for some of his dance related music & crossovers with funk and beat, and he became in demand with his wife’s dance company to work on certain ideas that MTV could use. This is also orchestrated, colourful, an exotic journey, with more Indian instruments, and certain dance styles as well. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/INDIAPSYCH.html#anchor_67 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- GUITAR -> Middle Eastern influences: * Twisted Nerve Voice Of The Seven Woods (UK,2007)***°’ Tr.3, “Silver Morning Branches” 4 min -31 This is a recommended listen of a Middle Eastern Rock improvisation : half acoustic (oud), half electric (fuzz). Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar6.html#anchor_189 * Locust Sir Richard Bishop : While my guitar violently bleeds (US,2007)***° The track “Zurvan” makes me keep this album mostly, also slightly middle eastern in style. Not enough time for this on… Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar9.html#anchor_246 * Drag City Sir Richard Bishop : Polytheistic Fragments (US,2007)****° Tr.5, “Free Masonic Guitar” 5 min -9 -36 A genius track with great evolutions crossing over several styles to something new and inventive. In this show the listener might have been thrown in rather quickly, in such a track, so I hoped they could dig it well. Not sure how to call this track… free style flamenco ? … melodic gypsy avant-garde ? Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar9.html#anchor_265 * Web Of Mimicry Ishraqiyun : "Balance of the Nineteen" / The Electromagnetic Azoth : Ubik (US,2007)****' Tr.A, Ishraqiyun : "Balance of the Nineteen" 4 min Secret Chiefs 3 are masters in blending and trying out many different styles. This is a Midle Eastern Rock interpretation based upon Middle Eastern / Arab traditional music. They perform such music brilliant as no other group. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog11c.html#anchor_164 * Web Of Mimicry Ur : Circumambulation / Labyrinth Of Light (US,2007)**** Tr.A, Ur : “Circumambulation” 6 min (shortened a bit) Great concept single, as if this is a real old 70s Turkish progpoprock album. Other singles of the group will be airplayed in some future radioshow. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog11c.html#anchor_164 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- TURKEY : * Double Moon Taksim Trio : Aytac Dogan, Hüsnü Senlendirici & Ismail Tunçbilek (TU, 2007)****' Tr.3, “Baglama solo” 7 min -53 Splendid electric baglama solo on this Turkish fusion-folk improvisation album of baglama, clarinet and kanun. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview2.html#anchor_139* * Arkaplan Hakan Tuna : Karanlikta Günes (TU,2004)*°°° Tr.8, “Mistri Jah” 7 min -60 Sounds like a somewhat follow-up of a late Baris Manço at the time was still involved with rock music ; often it is also mixed with a more common Turkish pop style. This I think is the most successful and perfect track. It contains some korg keyboards too. Hakan Tuna wrote interesting notes on the old Anadolu Pop/Rock scene. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview1.html#anchor_91 * Double Moon Baba Zula : Roots (TU,2007)***’ Tr.2, “Stinging Belly Dance Mood” 2 min Tr.28,“Alexander” (dub version) 4 min -66 Mostly short experiments on traditional Turkish themes and improvisations, comparable to how the group started with the previous group Zen in its early stage. Not the best album to take out tracks. I still prefer their live sound. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html#anchor_189 * Utopia Dinar Bandosu : Sayk Odelikdesik (TU,2007)**** Tr.1, “Istanbul Icin Isyan Vakti” 1 min Tr.2, “Saban’in Rüyasi” 3 min Tr.4, “Terzi Fikri” 5 min 9 -75 Very good hypnotic, straight-forward-energetic Turkish psychrock album. One of the best psychrock examples of the last 5 years. A few years ago, in their demo fase they couldn’t convince a local organiser in Belgium enough yet, while Baba Zula and Erdem Helvacioglu made it to an invitation. I wonder how they would think of their sound now. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html#anchor_192 * New Albion Erdem Helvacioglu : Altered Realities (TU,2006)****' Tr.7, “Ebony remains” 8 min (fragment) -83 Experimental, real time computer processed guitar ambience & electronica. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html#anchor_184 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- GUITAR -> FUSION : * private Mathew Joseph : Eclectia (IND/BERM,2006)***° Tr.2, “Tribute to Andrew York” 3 min Tr.5, “Aayiram” 3 min 6 -98 Indian born guitarist with fusion abilities, showing a “warm” sound. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html#anchor_104 * Drag City Randall Of Nazareth (US,2007)**** Tr.2, “Climbing Trees” 5 min -104 Bluesy guitar song, played in a fresh original and inspired way. While we have a journey throughout the world in this show, this track does not sound out of its place. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar9.html#anchor_268 * Tandem Mohenjo Daro : Baksheesh (US,2000)***° Tr.1, “Masmerdo” 5 min -109 Really great World Fusion guitar driven track, slightly Middle Eastern ? flavoured. Guitarist is Zach Mechlem, percussionists are Jim Feist & Zils Brian Gomien. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html#anchor_106 * Home Aurélia : Hypnogol (B,2007)***°’ Tr.5, “Les Janissaires” 5 min -114 Chamber-like imaginative drifting boat journey of a musician. Will be performed live on a travelling theatre boat. This is a beautiful and brilliant sitar/chamber/Middle Eastern track. I airplayed another great track in last radio show. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/belgium2.html#anchor_117 * demo Fernwood (US,2007)****’ Tr.1, “Sandpiper” 5 min Tr.3, “Hungarian Holliday” 4 min 9 -123 Brilliant & harmonious result of this fusion-? project of Todd Montgommery with Gayle Ellet (Djam Karet). Unfortunately there’s no official release yet. Labels? Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview17.html#anchor_487 * private Indus Red (US,2003)***' Tr.1, “Serpent Dance” 4 min -127 Indo-fusion album, with Jim Feist on tabla. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/World.html#anchor_24 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AFRICA : * Crammed Tartit : Abacabok (MAL,2006)***’ Closer to traditions with no intereference this is one of the most honest and somewhat relaxed Toareg-guitar releases I have heard so far. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Africa2.html#anchor_242 * Crammed V.A. : Roots Of Rumba Rock -Congo classics 1953-1955 -2cd- (CO,pub.2007)***°° CD1,Tr.3, Liengo : “Tembe Na Tembe” 3 min Tr.7, Luyeye Gaston : “Ah, Ngai Nzambe” 3 min Tr.10,Tino Mab : “Margarine Fina” 3 min 9 -154 Great compilation of Congo dance songs with rumba influence, and with Hawaiian tuning on guitar. This is the first time of fresh creativity of seeking for a sound of their own, happy and creative. A very interesting period for the Congo music scene. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Africa.html#anchor_246 * Yarngo V.A. : Songs of the African Coast: Cafe music of Liberia (LIB,1948-49, pub.2007)****° Tr.1, H.B.Hayes : “Chicken Is Nice” 3 min Tr.6, “People!Go Mind your Business” 3 min Tr.10,“Kokoleo-Ko(chicken crowing for day)” 3 min 9 Tr.11,“All Fo’ You” 3 min 12 -169 Brilliant and unique compilation of recordings of the blind pianist Howard B.Hayes with Malinda Parker & of The Greenwood Sisters, two of the most popular café acts in Liberia in the late ‘40s. Much of it is a must-have. Style ? cabaret-songs with all-world-crossover capacities.
