Extra Radioshow PVHF on radio Centraal, Antwerp : 2006-12-09, 600-800 PM Turkish psych/crossovers (with some Middle Eastern crossovers): reissues as well as new albums. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PART 1 : Middle Eastern crossovers. 2 bands in Arab/60's beat crossover style inspired in the Feenjon club scene. * Sundazed The gurus are hear! (US,1966-1967,reiss.2003)***°° Tr.1, "Come Girl" 3 min Tr.4, "Breakaway" 2 min Tr.5, "Cry, Cry" 3 min Tr.8, "Louie Louie" 3 min 11 Great Arab/beat crossover, mixed with more garage beat. The Feejon Café in New York knew a few interesting groups, like Gurus and Devil's Anvil, who were both influenced by the Arab groups who were also playing there as well. * Collectables The Devil's Anvil : Hard Rock from the middle East (US,1967)**°° Tr.4, "Selim Alai" 3 min Tr.6, "Besaha" 2 min 5 -16 Some great Arab folk-rock tracks on this LP. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast.html#anchor_91 Fits as well : * Mainstream The Orient Express (US(IR/F/B),1969)***°° Tr.3, "Layla" 4 min Tr.8, "For a moment" 3 min -20 Unique trio crossover psych group with persons originating from France, Belgium and Iran. I don't think the LP reissue was official, and also the 1996 cd seems to be a bootleg. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast.html#anchor_84 PS. An Arab beat crossover compilation can be expected soon on vinyl. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PART 2 : Turkish "psych" reissues : * World psych. Erkin Koray : Erkin Koray (TÜ,1967-1973)***°° Tr.5, "Istemem" 4 min Tr.6, "Ciçek Dagi" 3 min Tr.9, "Seni Her Gördügümde" 4 min 11 -31 I hardly can believe this is an official re-release. (I only know sure how they stole some pictures from my website. If they only had asked they would have given them in a better quality). The sound is good, and the cover has been restored beautifully. This is Erkin's first album, a compilation of previously released singles. (my grading is done for western ears for creativity, but could have been higher). 8 bonus tracks make the compilation more complete. The first 4 records of Erkin are all worth discovering. Info on Erkin Koray : http://progressive.homestead.com/erkin_entry.html * World psych. Erkin Koray : 2 (TÜ,1976)***°° Tr.10, "Timbilli" 4 min 4 -35 Third album by Erkin Koray. This album has an important Egyptian music influence (including some orchestrations, themes and rhythms). It is not the best starter for psych lovers, but is surely interesting for those who expect this approach. 4 previously recorded tracks are added as bonus tracks (1967-1971). * Undergr.Mast. Ersen : Dünden Bugünde (TÜ,pub.1977)***°° Tr.6, "Dostlar Beni Hatirlasin" 4 min Tr.10,"Bir Ayrilik Bir Yoksulluk" 4 min -44 Another reissue, this time surely unofficial of Ersen's first ??? album, also a compilation of singles. One side is with Dadaslar, the other side with Kardaslar. (My grading is done for western ears for creativity but could have been much higher). I don't consider it his best work, but it has incredible tracks, especially those by Kardaslar, and is good as it is. One of my favourite Turkish voices. Unfortunately, there's still no reissue of Cem Karaca, or Baris Manco. Info : http://progressive.homestead.com/ersen.html * World Psych. Edip Akbayram Dostlar : Nedir Ne Degildir ? (TÜ,1977)***°° bonus track : Tr.14, "Zalim Zalim" 3 min -47 Beautifully restored first album. My favourite still is the second album, which is much harder rock/folk-rock driven. Both first albums are compiled in a double cd/LP. -See further down-. The first album is very much inspired by Anatolian folk, and is rather close to traditional folk singing, in a rock context. This track has some interesting analogue synthesizer, organ, saz, fuzz,.. This interesting track unfortunately is missed on the double cd : Info : http://progressive.homestead.com/edip_entry.html * Normal Edip Akbayram (TÜ,1972-1977)****° Tr.1, "Ince Ince Bir Kar Yagar" 4 min -51 I can't help it comparing both versions again..This version is from 1974. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/turkey.html#anchor_96 * Findersk. Selda (TÜ,1976)****° Tr.5, "Ince Ince" 4 min -56 The restoration quality of the recording could have been a bit better, but it is a reissue of one of a very good record, and enjoyable enough to surprise. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/turkey.html#anchor_98 * Shadoks Bunalim (TÜ,1970-1972)****° Tr.1, "Basak Saclim" 3 min Tr.4, "Tas Var Köpek Yok" 4 min Tr.7, "Bir Dünya Da Bana Ver" 4 min 11 -62 Great anadolu rock & heavy garage psych compilation of this band's repertoire. A must-have, and one of the best starters for Turkish psych. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/turkey.html#anchor_109 * World Psych. Erkin Koray : Erkin Koray (TÜ,1967-1973)***°° bonus track : Tr.18, "Züleyha" (1972) 4 min -66 I assume this backing hardrock band is Ter (the band formed after Bunalim). I might have a heavier version somewhere, but this gives already an idea how they made the sound for Erkin Koray in those days. (See review of Bunalim : http://progressive.homestead.com/turkey.html#anchor_109) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PART 3 : New Turkish groups Part A : new rock. * private Yoldas (D/TÜ,2006)**°° Tr.1, "Sari Cizmeli" (B.Manço) 4 min Tr.3, "Leylim Ley" (trad.) 4 min 8 -74 Very good version of an old Anadolu rock track by this German based Turkish band: thanks to them I was able to present Baris in the same show as well. Second track has some heavy, metal-rock influenced details to traditional folk. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview2.html#anchor_100 * Elec-Trip Deja-Vu : Kendin Cos (2005)****' Tr.1, "Önce" 1 min Tr.2, "Kendin Cos" 4 min Tr.3, "Alisik Degilsin" 4 min 9 -83 Anatolian folk influences mixed with electronica, grunge metal, alternative rock,.. makes an original and new, heavy rock mix. Well produced. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html#anchor_145 * Kadiköy Camur : Bu Askin Izdirabini..(TÜ,2006)***° Tr.1, "Hara" 5 min Tr.2, "Halim Öyle" 4 min 9 -92 Alternative rock with, here, a rather progressive, clever use of Anadolu folk, and some middle eastern orchestration, done with a professional production. Remember the second track from the Devil's Anvil in the beginning of the radioshow, here with rock band, Turkish percussion and organ. Several other tracks are attractive Anatolian pop-rock, also with orchestrations. These two are my favourite tracks. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html#anchor_140 * Copasetik Faruk Green : a certain mr.Green (D/TÜ,2002)**°'? (Tr.2, "Faruk Green Airlines" 4 min) (not broadcasted) Tr.6, "Except you my bass" 7 min (shortened Tr/7, "My keys weight a ton" 2 min -101 At first hearing, a promising Turkish rhythm-driven fusionrock/pop band from Bremerhaven, Germany. The quickly chosen instrumental second track, after a quick hearing sounded rather progressive, although it is rather simple and hardly has a composition, beyond a rhythmic pulse. The second chosen track however is more an acid rhythm driven improvisational fusion-jazz-rock with funky elements. I still have to review this album later on http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html Info : http://www.myspace.com/farukgreen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part B : Alternative experiments : * demo Arapsaçi : demo (2006)*°'? (Tr.1, 1 min -103 (left out)) Private experiments with sounds, rock, electronic, folk and rock rhythms, crossover combinations,...will review the demo soon on http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html#anchor_168 More perhaps later. This item just arrived. Not airplayed : time shortage. * Jumping Monkey Douglasvegas : The Kara Bayram Series (rec.2000-2003)*° Slow improvisations on Turkish scales. Not enough worked enough out ideas yet and too much a rehearsal room experience to give already airplay to. Canadian born artist now living and playing in Kadikoy, Istanbul, with Dinar Bandosu and with Not Since The Illness. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html#anchor_157 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PART C : Crossover folk : * Harmonia Mundi Melike : Macar (TÜ/IRQ,B,NL,MAR,2006)***' (Tr.3, "Nazife Hanim" 4 min) (left out for time limitation) Belgium based, sad, traditional folk associated, but also contemporary song related, multi-arranged Turkish project meant for a professional production of a conceptual stage performance. Not airplayed : time shortage. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview1.html#anchor_81 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PART D : New electronic folk beats : * Elec-Trip Techno Roman Project : Feleque (2003)***' Successful as a combination of Roman Gypsy Music with commercial electro and Turkish beats. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview2.html#anchor_106 * Elec-Trip V.A. : Istanbul calling -ethnic-electronic (TÜ,2003)***° Tr.2, Taboo : "Ugurcan Sezen" 5 min -112 Lounge electronica ala Turkey track from a folk-crossover electronic beats compilation. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/TURKCOMPI.html#anchor_52 * Elec-Trip Lava : Carnaval del Amor (2005)***° Tr.1, "Porque son turcos" 4 min -116 Sunny rhythmic DJ and songwriter work. Her voice has something of "older" soul- driven music. Besides there are Cuban elements with with Turkish,.. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview1.html#anchor_76 * Elec-Trip Selim Demirdelen : Beat Bazaar (2002)***° Tr.1, "The Door" 6 min Perfectly attractive drum'n bass electro track, on an interesting electronica album. Of course also here are Anatolian folk elements. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview2.html#anchor_109 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- outro : * finderskeep. Mustafa Özkent ve Orkestrasi : Gençlik ile Elele (TÜ,1973)***** Tr.2, "Burcak Tarlalari" 5 min Instrumental rhytmic-psych album.
