Extra Radioshow PVHF on radio Centraal, Antwerp : 2006-12-16, 600-800 PM NEW PSYCH/PROG/RIO : REISSUES AND NEW RELEASES. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ # 60s references : * Music-Maniac V.A. : V/A - Scream Loud!!! The Fenton Story (US,pub.2006)**°° -(2CD/LP)- CD1, Tr.21, Mussies : "12 o'clock, July" 4 min CD2, Tr.17, Lyn and the Invaders : "Boy is gone" 3 min Tr.24, Assortment: "Bless our hippy home" 3 min Tr.31, Pedestrians : "think twice" 3 min 13 Compilation from the short live of this often garage driven label. First choice is the most expressive track for me, an instrumental with fuzz freak-out. Second track is the only female vocalist band, an emotional song. Third track is a funny and weird track. Last favourite is a sad ballad. These are the most emotionally driven tracks from the album. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/sixties2.html#anchor_159 * Beyond Your Mind Scream!!?! vs. The Strange Flowers (ARG/I,2006)*° Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/sixties.html#anchor_148 * Elsewhen Loop Guru : Elderberry Shiftglass (US,2006)**° Tr.5, "University of the third Ear" 2 min Tr.10,"Marshmallow Transplant Man" 1 min Tr.13,"A fistful of fruitcake" 3 min Tr.17,"hundreds and thousands : A hip Odyssey" 1 min (scetch) Tr.20, "Spring (before Altertaste)" 5 min -25 In each title is a musical reference to some '60s group mixed with neo-psych and rhythms. The first chosen track I assume is a reference Third Ear Band ? But there are also references to cult movies, like Dracula, or spoken word like from Timothy Leary. On this listen on different equipment I the rhythms sounded harder than before, less neo-sixties. The whole project sounds like a new century tribute to some past days in music and film mostly, as a kind of more energy-active chill-out. Last track is a rumba with mellotron, organ, trumpet, percussion. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/sixties2.html#anchor_158 # electronica rhythmic keyboard/guitar associations : * Melting Pot Achim Reichel : Die Grüne Reise (The green journey)/Erh. (1970)****° Tr.1, "Globus" 3 min Tr.8, "Cosmic Vibration - an afternoon Concert" part 1 3 min 6 min Tr.10, "Truth and Probability" 3 min 9 -34 Rather unique experiment of multi-tracked rhythms with electronica and guitar mostly, mixed with more rock tracks, which are also experimental. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Germanprogreview.html#anchor_37 * Polydor Achim Reichel : Echoes aus Zeiten der grünen Reise (1971)****° A compilation and remix ? of the first two albums, mostly especially the instrumental experiments. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Germanprogreview.html#anchor_37 * Melting Pot Achim Reichel : D.G.R. /Erholung (1975)**** tr.2,cdtr.12, "Atmosphäre" 7 min -41 A bit more jazzy improvisation of ideas originating comparable to some of his previous works, here a calm track, with additional flute. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Germanprogreview.html#anchor_37 * Mellotronen Mecki Mark Men : Maraton (S,1970,re.2006)**°° Tr.2, "Ragathon" 4 min Tr.7, "Marstrand" 2 min Tr.11,"ragathon (part 2)" 3 min Tr.12,-outro- 1 min -50 One of the early progressive rock groups, with an American rock (bluesy Hendrix,..) influence, but also an importance to the Hammond organ. This album was done during their stay in the US, and had some loose energy. I chose more calm improvisations, also with some sitar, flute. Only the las bit shows their core sound. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/sweden3.html#anchor_169 * Hammond Beat Men from SPECTRE : The Living Eye (CH,2006)**° Tr.11, "Astralkorper" 7 min -57 Hammond organ re-introduced with an alternative progressive instrumental band. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog20.html#anchor_222 * Finders Keepers Bruno Spoerri : Glückskugel (CH,rec.1971-1978, pub.2006)***’ Tr.6, "Lilith - singing in the dark" 2 min Electronica/arranger experimentalist composer for various commissions. Often rather nervous-rhythmic electronic music. This is the quietest track, which fit best with this show. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog16.html#anchor_157 * Häpna Hans Appelqvist : Naima (S,2006)****° Tr.8, "http://www.naimachat.se" 3 min 60 New composed modern music. This track uses I think only PC sounds in the Composition, recognisable to people who use a PC often. There’s even percussion on the keyboard, a genius interactive composition. (This release will get more airplay in the next radioshow, which will be psychfolk related). Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/sweden3.html#anchor_166 # composed rock (& flamenco-rock) * Silenze Uzva : Uoma (FIN,2006)**** Tr.7, "Arabian Ran-Ta" 10 min 70 Intelligently composed new chamber rock music. An improvement to their previous, already very good release. This track has complex rhythms. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/FINLANDGROUPS2.html * Angel Air Carmen : Fandangos in Space / Dancing on a cold Wind (US/UK,rec.1973-1974)****° CD1,Tr.1, "Bulerias" 6 min CD2,Tr.1, "Viva mi Sevilla" 6 min 12 -82 One of the best flamenco-rock related groups, now their first 2 albums (of three) are reissued. Both chosen track have also complex footstamps, mixed into the very “progressive” rock fusing sound. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog-3.html#anchor_150 * Quixote Tea For Two : Twisted (D,2006)***° Tr.1, "Spanish Night" 5 min Tr.2, "Soundscapes" 6 min 11 -93 Original alternative pop-rock band which uses lots of musical themes and ideas. In first track they use a flamenco theme. The second instrumental track is very composed, with a neo-early Genesis & Marillion flavour in the first minutes... An interesting and attractive album. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog11B.html#anchor_150 * Cuneiform Nebelnest : Zepto (F,2006)***° Tr.1, "Pillars of Birth" 7 min -100 Instrumental progressive rock band on the edge of RIO. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog2.html#anchor_65 * Cuneiform Birdsongs of the Mesozoic with Oral Moses : Extreme Spirituals (US,2006)*°°' Tr.7, "Listen to the Angels Shoutin'" 5 min Idiosyncratic combination of RIO arrangements on interpretations of Negro spirituals. I think it is most rewarding when directing towards new music, and when the singing and composition interact, like on this, successful track. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog17.html#anchor_225 * Vitamin The String Quartet : Tribute to Slayer (US,2003)***° Tr.7, "Die by the Sword" 5 min -110 One of the various quartets who interprets metal, rock and pop music. This Is my favourite track. The group interprets the melodic side of the music. Apocalyptica also played with metal power. String Quartet interprets in amore classical, composition way. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog17.html#anchor_221 * Unicorn T.A.O. : the abnormal Observations (POL,2006)***° Tr.1, "Shruti" 8 min Tr.7, 7 min Composed rock with metal, jazz, symphonic and many other influences. An original band and sound, which grows with each listen.
