Radioshow PVHF 1st week of August : 2006-8-19 (8PM-10 PM), on radio Centraal, Antwerp : Mostly new promising singer-songwriters, mostly leaning towards the sensitive acoustic, and some psychfolk & freakfolk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Promising new singer-songwriters, part 1: * Backwater Chris Lockington : The Four Tales EP (IR/UK,2006)**** Tr.2, “One Night” 5 min 5 Great and talented new young singer-songwriter. I would have airplayed track 1 too if I would have had enough airplay time. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-9.html#anchor_403 Reissue : * Sunbeam Mike/Meic Stevens : rain in the leaves : the EPs, volume 1 (1965-1969)**°°’ Tr.17, “Mae Gennyf I Gariad” (I’ve got a love) 5 min -10 I could only airplay one track to give an impression of the personal style of Meic Stevens and for what to expect from the album, so I had chosen “Lan a Lawr” (where’s the morning?) at first, but that fitted less with what I’ve chosen in the show, so I took the more progressive track I’ve got a love instead. This track stylistically fits well with his famous “Outlander” album. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue2.html#anchor_88 Promising new singer-songwriters, part 2 : * Timbreland Nancy Elizabeth Cunliffe : The Wheel Turning King -EP- (UK,2006)**** Tr.1, “Place to shelter” 4 min Tr.3, “Sense” 2 min 6 This track has powerfully played acoustic guitar, glockenspiel and handpercussion and a beautiful voice, nice song from a great release. Second track is with harp and acoustic guitar, another not to miss track. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-10.html * private Wooly Mar : Free Fall Anthems  (US,2003)****’ Tr.2, “Heal the swell” 3 min Tr.6, “Wooden Parts” 5 min Tr.10, “Desire Teeth” 3 min -28 Great emphasized singing. Second chosen track has more powerful guitars. I hated to be oblidged to leave out the last chosen track, but I had to because of time limitations. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-10.html#anchor_427 * private Wooly Mar : Woodland Chapel (US,2005)**** (Tr.8, “Whole Body Health” 4 min) Left out because of airplay limitations. Both Wooly Mar items are comparable, but I still find the 2003 the most powerful of both releases. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-10.html#anchor_427 * preview copy Lisa Knapp : Wild and Undaunted (UK,2006)****’ Tr.2, “There u r” 6 min -34 Brilliant voice between English folk/soulful singer-songwriter, with some string arrangements. The track could remind some of Bjork, but this is much better. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/folk2.html#anchor_66 * Domino Juana Molina : Son (ARG,2006)***°’ Tr.3, «La Verdad» 6 min -40 Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-10.html#anchor_463 * Backtothedirt Brian Gladstone : A time for new beginnings (Can,2005)**° Help there’s a hippie in the office writing songs on us. The songs fit less in this show, so I’ll ask the real s/sw to use this release in his show instead. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reviews2.html#anchor_40 * private Sophie Moleta : compilation (NZ,1992-1998)*’ Absolutely to classify as «loner» folk singer-songwriter. Tried lots of times to get a grip on it, but have a hard time to find the right angle yet, without loosing a grip on reality too. I give up for a longer while. Listing : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-9.html#anchor_379 * pre-release Johanna Kunin : Clouds Electric (US,2006)****’ Tr.2, “Fireflies” 4 min Perfectly produced and arranged, superclear and very attractive pop-singer- songwriter music, produced by Tucker Martine. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-10.html#anchor_436 * Fence Things In Herds: Everything has to end somewhere (UK,2005)***’ Tr.2, “As you leave” 5 min -49 Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html#anchor_87 * private Kitchen Cynics : Dumbfoundlings (UK,2006)***’ Tr.4, 3 min 52 Album of instrumentals. This is a wonderful guitar based piece. Review on http://singersong.homestead.com/TheKitchenCynics.html * private Rory McIntyre & The Kitchen Cynics : Ephemera (UK,2006)***° (Tr.5, “Great uncle’s deathbed dance” 4 min) (Tr.10, “Restless Morning” 3 min (?)) (Tr.12, “Another Time” 6 min) Tr.21, “But Then again” 4 min -56 Sadly I had to leave out a few choices. “But then again” is one of my favourites of new songs. It’s a sad but funny song. Review on http://singersong.homestead.com/TheKitchenCynics.html Psychfolk : * September Gurls Fit & Limo : A Garland of Flowers (LP) (D,2006)****° Tr.2, “Three is a green crown” 7 min -63 (Tr.3, “The Life and times of Pan” 5 min) Also from this album I could only airplay one example. So I chose this Incredible String Band cover. This LP published together with next cd : * September Gurls Fit & Limo : A Bunch of Herbs (D,2006)**** (Tr.13, “Humpty Dumpty” 16 min) Sadly enough there wasn’t enough airplay for this release. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview15.html#anchor_350 Promising new singer-songwriters, part 4 : * Twisted Nerve Voice of the seven woods single (UK,2006)****° Tr.1, “The Firefly Dusk” 6 min -70 Some use of sitar this time to the talent of guitar with percussion,.. In the second part you can notice the Pentangle influence. John Renbourne asked the guitarist to participate on concerts. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview15.html#anchor_356 * private The Twelve Canons : volume one/ volume 2 (US,2006)**°° Tr.14, “I’m not a gambling Man” 4 min -74 (Tr.16, “Thief in the night” 4 min) Track 14 is a very beautiful track with a very nice subtonic drone on one of the guitars. I left out my second choice because of time limitations. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-10.html#anchor_426 Private Spider : The Way to Bitter Lake -mini CD- (US,2006)*** No time to airplay this item, I will give it to the singer-songwriter radioshow for broadcast in their own show. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-10.html#anchor_450 * Zopf Jesus Licks : Terrible Beauty (UK,2006)**** Tr.1, “Biting machine” 3 min Tr.5, “Terrible Beauty” 4 min 7 -81 Some songs sound a bit like a mix between Vashti Bunyan and .. like this first track. I very much like the child choir, with glass sounds on the background of “Terrible Beauty”. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-10.html#anchor_435 * Zopf Jesus Licks single (UK,2006)***° (Tr.2, “Eternally Lonely, Harr Barbie” 5 min) Psychfolk/acidfolk : * Littlesomebody novemthree (3" mini-CD) (US,2006)***°/***’ (Tr.1, “Prey” 2 min) Tr.3, “Waxing Gibbous” 3 min -84 (Tr.4, “Gedwolmann” 4 min) Psychfolk for fans of Stonebreath, ..in a happy-sad acoustic sphere. The band is living with the heart and mind close to nature. Only 99 printed. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview15.html#anchor_336 * Little Somebody Arrowwood : Hemlock and Spindle Flower (US,2006)**’ (Tr.13, “Clumsy Dance” 1 min) Extremely limited release of whispery girly voice on often slightly vague mood- driven psychfolk. Reminiscent to Samsara Lubelski, .. Not enough time for more airplay. But the description I will give will give some idea what to expect. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview15.html#anchor_341 Promising new singer-songwriters, part 5: * De Bonte Koe In Julia’s Mind Scene : A collection of suns and moons from around the world (NL,2006)**** Tr.3, “Fantasy rules my world” 4 min -88 Jazzy folkpop with beautiful warm voice and nice improvisation. This short tracks is a bit poppier, which does not show the full range of the album, but I didn’t have so much airplay time for all these items. Review : http://www.singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-7.html#anchor_311 * Amish Theo Angell : Dearly Beloved (US,rec.2003-2005,iss.2006)**°° Tr.5, “Price of Prince” 3 min Tr.6, “Thread of Grace” 5 min 8 -96 Cunfusing weird folk side project of this Hall Of Fame member, with a few beauties too, like these two songs. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/psychfolkpopreview4.html#anchor_226 * Durtro Baby Dee : Made For Love (US,2005)**** Tr.3, “Three Men” 5 min -101 Baby Dee shares stages more often with Anthony and the Johnsons and Current 93. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-3.html#anchor_193 Weird acid folk singer-songwriter : * private Salvador Cresta : Arana vegetal al viento (ARG,2006)**°° Tr.3, “Paseo Crepuscular con chispas verdes” 4 min (shortened) Tr.7, «Lapso colapso» 1 min 4 105 Beautiful album once more of Spanish home-recorded songs and odd instrumental interventions, rich with fantasy, fruitful inspiration like a good sangria. No need to understand Spanish to enjoy. This first track gives an idea. The gypsy fun outro fits with what follows next. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview15.html#anchor_320 Promising new singer-songwriters, part 4 (with some oddness) : * Eca Ramona Cordova : The Boy who floated freely (US,2006)****’ Tr.1, “Introduction” 3 min Tr.2, “Inside the gypsy Bar” 3 min Tr.7, “Sung with the birds” 4 min Tr.8, “One Day, Someday” 4 min 13 Difficult to pick out tracks from this outstanding poetically rich and happy-sad very artistic playful fantasy singer-songwriter album. Almost impossible to airplay less. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-10.html#anchor_466 Weird folk : * Fatcat Our Brother the Native : Tooth and Claw (US,2006)*** Tr.12, “Nautilidae” 6 min (fragm.of 4 min.->end of show) Weird folk with an Animal Collective influence of experimentation. This is more quiet moment. The track will be used on the background to end my radioshow.
