Radioshow "PVHF" on radio Centraal, Antwerp : 2007-09-01 : 800-1000 PM -new (sitar)fusions -> -new guitarists -> -new & old acid/psychfolk -> sensitive voices ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Part 1 : Indian fusions/crossovers/contemporary music * Kning Jerry Johansson : Next Door Conversation (S,2007)**** Tr.1.426->703 min 4 min Slowly building up, nicely interwoven and harmony-stringed composition of sitar, orchestra and santur, making flavours . Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/SITARORCHESTRA.html * Rain Tree Nadaka & The Basavaraj Brothers : Live in Paris -cd+dvd- (IND,2007)****° Tr.4, “Laya”: part 2: “theme + violin solo” 3 min Tr.5-> 1,..min Tr.11, “Chakra”, track 11, “pallavi” 1 min 5 min Guitarist who mastered Indian music and who now plays contemporary Indian music based upon Indian classical music. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/Nadaka.html#anchor_21 * Ragtime Edward Powell : Spiritdance (CAN,rec.2003-2006,pub.2007)***° Tr.5, “Jai Jai Narayana” 5 min -14 A track of slide-guitar combined with sitar, Indian percussion and some Bhajan vocals. Edward Powell I listed before with his Fusion group Friedsitar. This is recorded with several different session musicians in various countries, mostly with a steady Indian percussionist. Instruments he plays include sitar, oud or African bass. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html#anchor_95 -Part 2 : new guitarists * private Cian Nugent EP (IR,2007)**** Tr.1, “"I will take the top of a tall cedar and break a tender sprout” 4 min Promising new guitarist with a John Fahey influence. CDR release of 100 only. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar9.html#anchor_257 * Unhip Egle Sommacal : Legno (I,2007)**** Tr.1, “Gli Avamposti Sono Minati” 4 min Italian composer showing his own kind of Fahey influence. CD release of 300 only. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar9.html#anchor_240 * Strange Attractors Harris Newman : Decorated (US,2007)****’ Tr.1, “Our Cavalcade of sightless riders” 6 min Another brilliant release of one of the new greats of guitarists. 18+14=32 The track has a small looped theme before “crossing the bridge”, like a sportman’s intention before doing the final action or initiative or effort. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar9.html#anchor_254 -part 3 : new acid/Psych-folk : * Ahstern In Gowan Ring : Exists and Entrances -collected volumes I-IV- (2CD) (US,2007)****° Tr.1, “Montesinho instrumental” 3 min Tr.5, “Winter Flowers” 3 min Tr.16,“The Lord Of Man” 6 min -12 44 For me B’Eirth and this project is the best modern troubadour around. Also this compilation is brilliant and one of the must-haves of In Gowan Ring. First track is an instrumental. It shows the fine guitar playing of B’Eirth. Last musical theatre track was done with Annabel Lee and Michael Moynihan. The name Annabel Lee appears again later in the show, but I assume this is a different person. This track sounds like a child-friendly pagan-inspired play, but could still be compared to some literature inspired Current 93, even when the approach and effect is different. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview19.html#anchor_588 * Little Somebody Green Mistletoe : Forest Dweller (US, 2007)***° Tr.5, “Golwg (the sight)” 2 min Tr.11, “Mynd am dro yn coeden (to go for a walk in the forest)” 2 min Tr.12, “Forest Dweller” 5 min 9 -53 Direct-mystic nature is the true inspiration for this album. Second voice is by Gennifer G.Lee. The music is kept relatively simple but manages to be effective music to express its intensions. These are three favourite tracks. CD release of 366 only. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview4.html#anchor_87 * Hobby/Horse The Owl Service : A Garland Of Song (UK,rec.2006-2007)**** Tr.3, “Hoodening” 3 min Tr.4, “Turpin Hero” 5 min Tr.7, “Katie Cruel” 3 min 11 -64 Beautiful acid/psychfolk/acoustic folkrock album with the ambition to create a masterpiece. They sound very Trees-like on track 4, -and not only here-, especially in the electric guitar and voice. This track is with Nancy Wallace on vocals. Diana Collier you can hear on track 7. A must for acid folk lovers, and a potentional future classic. CDR release of 100 only. One of the singers who also participated was Pamela Wyn Shannon. See next-> Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview19.html#anchor_633 * Girlhenge Pamela Wyn Shannon : Courting Autumn (US/UK,2007)***** (Tr.1, “Oh Bittersweet Dear Madeline” 4 min) Tr.2, “Tis Rambletide in Ambleside” 5 min Tr.3, “Courting Autumn” 6 min 11 -75 Beautiful voice, crafted guitar, well composed and beautifully arranged songs and true emotions. Also here, nature is an honest inspiration. Handcrafted CDR release of 500 only. Highly recommended, a must-have ! Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview19.html#anchor_637 * private Magicfolk (UK,2007)***° Tr.5, “Aibo” 4 min -80 This track which could be found on their previous EP, still is one of my favourite. The inspirations of the group is consciously often related with Pagan or mystical subjects. The group vaguely remind me of the Belgian April Sky (80s/90s), but who remember them now ? Last group was inspired by the magic and folkrock of Trees and the tight and fluent arrangements of Abba. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview15.html#anchor_374 -acidfolk associated singer/songwriters : * Fatcat Vashti Bunyan : Some Things Must Stick In Your Mind (UK,1964-1967)***°° ?? Tr.3, “Train Song” 3 min Tr.4, “Love Song” 3 min -86 Welcome surprise of demo and singles collection of early Vasthi Bunyan works, the singer with an impossible to find sweeter and innocent voice. Some tracks are slightly 60s pop-rockier compared to the later album. This album just arrived in the mailbox, so I still didn’t hear all yet, but I couldn’t help it to pick out these two lovely examples. Review (soon): http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/reissue4.html#anchor_241 * Camera Obscura Saint Joan : The Wrecker's Lantern (UK/HU/F,2007)**° Tr.9, “December” 9 min -95 For me, this is no doubt my favourite track of this album. It uses some spoken word in the beginning. It has a stirring melancholic power, mourning and with broken poetry, injected by certain self-realizations. Alternative singer-songwriting with band. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-18.html#anchor_751 * Fat-Cat Songs of Green Pheasant : Gyllyng Street (US,2007)***' Tr.1, “Boats” 4 min (shortened) 99 This kind of dream away pop has clear references to the early 4AD production style (Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil,…). Not all tracks are exactly this. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-12.html#anchor_531 Instead of production ideas, let’s return back to the true heart sentiments… * Hör Up! Lisa O Lillportan : 'Cantering' (S,2007)****° Tr.2, “Wendiwan” 5 min Tr.3, “Wavers, Whisperers, hunters and sailors” 5 min -110 Beautiful song album. More than once Lisa’s voice reminds me of These Trails singer. Wish I could airplay more because this is brilliant. Labels ?? Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-19.html#anchor_777 * private Kate Fletcher : Fruit (UK,2007)**°° Tr.14, “Broken String” 6 min Nice and typical folk voice sings own songs and interprets traditionals. This is a remarkable track based upon a pygmy text. See www.survival- international.org for Kate’s political concerns for writing this song. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/folk3.html#anchor_75 * demo Annabel (Lee) & Richard E : Annabel (Lee) (UK,2007)****° Tr.1, “(1849)” 6 min Beautiful timeless jazz voice and track. This could have been recorded between 1940 and 1960, but it is new. Beautiful strings and flute are added while bass, piano melancholically weep in loop-form with the song. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-19.html#anchor_776 * Dusty Groove Doroty Ashby : The Rubaiyat of..” (US,1970)****? Also nice to check out is the reissue “the rubainat of Dorothy Ashby”, jazz with ethnic (African, use of the Japanese koto), soul and funk influences. Produced and arranged by Richard Evans. Unfortunately I had no time to airplay this last album, but I had the time to mention it well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homepage radioshow : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/ Other playlists : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/2007.html Newsletter with new reviews and playlists with some audio links : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/psychevanhetfolk/ Subscribe: psychevanhetfolk-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
