Radioshow "PVHF" on radio Centraal, Antwerp : 2007-02-03 : 800-1000 PM ACID FOLK RELATED REISSUES & A FEW NEW ITEMS ----------------------------------------------------------------------- * Sunbeam Dawnwind : Looking back on the future (UK,1975,re.2006)**°' Tr.6, "Canticle" 3 min Reissue of this rather moody Folkcub-folk, not incredibly special but fine. This is the most melancholic track Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/reissue3.html#anchor_162 * Sunbeam Mark Fry : Dreaming with Alice (UK,1972,re.2006)****' Tr.2, "The Witch" 7 min Tr.3, "Dreaming with Alice (verse 2)" 1 min 8 -11 Very good conceptual psychfolk album, with a repeated verse theme with each song. This track has some kind of eastern guitar (or what is it?) sounding close to the sarod.Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/reissue3.html#anchor_171 * Si-Wan Bread, Love and Dreams (UK,1969)***°' Tr.8, "Until she needs you" 4 min -15 This is not officially reissued yet, but I preferred to play this very sad song. Remarks on http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/reissue3.html#anchor_171 * Decca Bread, Love and Dreams : The Strange Tale of Captain Shannon and the Hunchback from Gigha" (1970)***°' Tr.7, "Purple Hazy Melancholy" 4 min -19 Also the second album is not officially reissued yet ; I chose another, sad song. Conceptual (acid)folk album. Remarks on http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/reissue3.html#anchor_157 * Decca Bread, Love and Dreams : Amaryllis (UK,1971,re.2006)****° Tr.1, "Amaryllis, part 1 : Out of the darkness and into the light" 7 min Tr.2, "Amaryllis, part 2 : Zoroaster's Prophecy" ->130 9 -28 Best of all three albums, a perfect and more consistent album. Difficult to stop the recording when playing it or listening to it, but I had to stop somewhere. Review on http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/reissue3.html#anchor_171 * 20-20-20 V.A. : International Sad Hits -volume one: Altaic Language Group- (TÜ/S-KO/JAP,pub.2006)****° Tr.1, Fikret Kizilok : "Just as long" 4 min Tr.3, Tomokawa Kazuki : "Storms in the dead of night" 4 min Tr.8, Mikami Kan : "Why stop it if you like it ?" 5 min Tr.13,Kim Doo Soo : "Wild Flower" 5 min 18 –46 + 3 -49 Splendid compilation of sad hits, with some of my international heroes. I listed from each musician one track. Very moving songs, especially when you know the story behind the persons who sing it, even more when you read the translations. I will also read the translations of tr.8,13 in my show. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue3.html#anchor_120 * Hand / Eye The Trees Community: The Christ Tree -4CD box- (US, 1973-1975)***°° CD1, The Christ Tree : Tr.1, "Psalm 42" 9 min Tr.2, "The parable of the mustard seed" (2 min fragment) (1975) CD4, The Trees Community at the Abbey of Gethsemani, part two : The Passion (1973) : Tr.6, "Singing in Tongues" 2 min Tr.7, "Such a Love (reprise)" 2 min 15 -64 This Christian community makes music for the Lord, and shows a huge variety of world music instruments, but is mostly led by harp or sitar, and by sweet delicate harmony vocals. A unique release, with a certain light-footedness, typical for mid '70s hippie-flavoured times. It also has a few experimental moments, of which I especially took out beautiful and meditative harmony vocal experiments. Perhaps the 1975 LP still is the most worked out of all these recordings, while the other recordings are more stripped bare to a slightly smaller group, during the live performances. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/THECHRISTTREE.html#anchor_101 * private Psalters : The Divine Liturgy of the Wretched Exiles (US, 2006)***°° Tr.2, Penitential rite : "Psalm 6" 6 min Tr.4, "Gloria" (with some readings) 5 min Tr.7, Apostles Creed : "Creed" 4 min Another unique group with Christian inspirations, but which is more clearly an expression from our times and times perspectives, with open view to other cultures, especially Middle Eastern. Their vision is not liturgical like from a monastery vision (like Trees Community), but are like a study on liturgical movements, with a nomadic and very direct expression : wild and uncompromising. A brilliant group that will bring Thee Silver Mt.Zion.., The Eyesores, Black Ox Orchestar, and several others like this in mind. "Gloria" is a bit more folkrock styled, and has Middle Eastern percussion. Highly recommended ! Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/psalters.html#anchor_437 * G.O.Delights Emma Myldenberger : Tour De Trance (D,1979,re.2007)****° Tr.2, "Regenreigen" 20 min -104 I had to airplay this long mostly instrumental masterpiece from the second album of this rather progressive/chamber-like folkrock group. Their first album had been reissued a half year earlier. Another live recording will follow later this year. For acid / chamber / art / psychfolk lovers this album is a must. One of the best German folk and chamber music related releases ever. This track uses a text from Wolfang Borchert (15th century). A small part of it will listeners remind of The Third Ear Band. As a bonus track there has been added a live concert from around the same period. Second review on http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/reissue2.html#anchor_94 * Turly Crio Goldoolins : The World is Somewhere Else (IS,2006)***° Tr.2, "Ah! I see Horizons" 9 min Tr.9, "My Song" 4 min 13 -117 (Tr.10,"The World is somewhere else" -> end of show) New great Israeli group which albums should interest '70s acid folk lovers too. I wish I had enough airplay for the last, very nice track. It would have been the perfect ending for the show, but I needed to some announcements instead. The group's best album so far ? Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview11.html#anchor_198 * Anouncements : Singer Liesbeth List celebrates her 65th birthday on the 4th of February in Antwerp. There's a special concert in De Roma with duets with Johan Verminnen, Mich Walschaerts (Kommil Foo) and Kathleen Vandenhoudt. Liesbeth List did very special things with Ramses Shaffy in late '60s, with various songs of Boudewijn De Groot/Leonard Nijgh which are likely to remember. She also performed songs from Theodorakis, Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf, Frank Boeijen, and so on, in a style influenced by the French cabaret traditions. Concert in advance will cost 20 euros. The concert is already sold out. Info : http://www.deroma.be/index.cfm?PageID=17566 & http://www.nekka.be/liesbeth.html * Zuiderpershuis has a concert of a group from Valencia called L'Ham de Porc. They play music from medieval, Bulgaria, Greek, Middle-Eastern origins and play ud, saz, ney, kaval, darbuka, lute, hurdy-gurdy,pipes,… and with vocals. Concert on 14th of February.
