Radioshow “PVHF” on radio Centraal, Antwerp : 2007-12-08 : 800-1000 PM New psych/rock & reissues & "African Psych special" ----------------------------------------------------------------------- intro : 2 min - PART 1 : 60S & POST-60S SOUNDS : * Cicadelic The Bluethings : "Blow Your Mind" (US,rec.1963-1966,pub.2007)**°' CD1,Tr.11, “Just two days ago” 3 min CD2,Tr.15, “The Orange Rooftop of your mind” 3 min Three approaches define this group: a British Mersey-beat influence, a mellow “folk”-rock 60s sound, and a small period of psychpop. This double CD set is their most complete collection to date. These are my two real favourite tracks I like to lift out. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/sixties3.html#anchor_205 * Fallout Richard Twice (US,1970)***’ Tr.8, “The Finest poet” 4 min -12 Rather charming and well produced/arranged sound of the 60s pop duo’s only album. This is my favourite track. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/sixties3.html#anchor_211 * Nasoni Octopus Syng: Birds Of Morning are never late (FIN,2007)**° Tr.1, “Just a little bit trials” 4 min Nice flower-psychpop with a folky Syd Barrett flavour. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/prog7.html#anchor_84 * Fallout Lynn Blessing : Sunset Painter (US,1969)**° Tr.2, “Sunset Painter” 3 min -15 A collection of laidback jazzy pop-covers instrumentals, in a slightly dated but still enjoyable style. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/prog-3.html#anchor_175 * Gearfab Mouzakis (& Fabulous Pharoahs): Magic Tube + 14 (US,1965-1973/1971)*°°’ Tr.15, “Magic Tube” 8 min -23 While I don’t think the garage of Fabulous Paroahs was too great, but Mouzakis LP was already more interesting, just listen to the almost Afro-beat-fast Rhythms, a longer, rather rhythm & bluesy track, “Magic Cube”. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/psych.html#anchor_214 * Off The Hip The Urges : Psych Ward (UK,2007)**°° Tr.1, “Read The Signs” 3 min Tr.10, “Curse It All” 3 min Good punk/psych/garage. I thought at first they were an old band, because that’s how they sound like. Audio : http://www.myspace.com/theurges Review on http://www.progressive.homestead.com/sixties3.html * Voodoo Rhythm Reverend Beat-Man : Surreal Folk Blues Gospel Trash vol 2 (CH,2007)***°° Tr.1, “Letter to myself” 3 min Tr.7, “I’ve got the devil inside” 3 min Tr.11,“Jesus” 2 min 8 -31 Original and unique character and entertaining figure/voice singing his gospel trash/folkblues/folkpunk,…like a new Jesus and an exposing devil, very human, like a praying and conveying priest and a conscious sinner, all in one man... Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/sixties.html#anchor_160 -PART 2 : AFRICAN PSYCH : * EMI Ofege : Try and Love (NIG,1974)***°’ Tr.1, “Nobody Fails” 5 min Tr.6, “Ofege” 4 min 9 -40 Not reissued yet, but this is a very nice Afro-psych/rock album that deserves a reissue. Last of the Origins is less good, but has comparable elements. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/africa5.html#anchor_260 * Shadoks Blo : Chapter One (NIG,1972)****° Tr.6, “We are out together” 8 min Tr.7, “Miss “Sagit” 5 min 13 -53 A bit of afro-funk here, but also some real psych like in these tracks. The second album **° is much more common afro-rock with a funky touch now and then, and on 3 **° there’s even more afro-funk. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/africa5.html#anchor_254 * Shadoks Question Mark : Be nice to the people (KEN,1974)***° Tr.2, “Be Nice To The People” 5 min Tr.5, “Oh My Girl” 6 min 11 -64 Interesting urban psych-flavoured rock album, with really nice psych organ. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/africa6.html#anchor_268 * Chris Editions Chrissy Zebby Tembo & Ngozi Family : My Ancestors (ZAM,1974)**°' Tr.5, “Oh ye ye” 3 min -67 Reissued on LP, rather primitive fuzzrock songs. This is the only instrumental. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/africa4.html#anchor_247 * Zamupa The Blackfoot : The Foot Steps (ZAM,197?)**°’ Cdr tr.14, “Mwe Bafyashi” 4 min -71 Rather garage-psychrock. listing : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/africa4.html#anchor_248 * Tear/Shadoks Witch : Lazy Bones!! (ZAM,1974)***° Tr.1, “Black Tears” 6 min -77 Witch has a much more sophisticated sound compared to the other two Zambian groups I have. First track still has still a slight direct rawness, but also great fuzz solos. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/africa4.html#anchor_252 - PART 3 : NEW… * Indigo Embryo : Ni Hau (D,1996)***°’ Tr.1, «after small coming good coming» 10 min -97 One of my favourite world ethno-jazz/rock groups. This is a cooperation with Chinese musicians, but there are Mongol?, Arab and other influences too. Info : http://www.spacelook.de/embryo/em_ni_hau.htm * Private/Lowlands Ballroomquartet : Soundmanifest (B,2007)***°' Tr.5, “The Way to the top” 6 min Tr.8, “Tranquilizer” 5 min -11 -98 Even with rather pop attractive rhythms, this is an inventive new sound of new (chamber) rock orientation, here with some small folk and some Swami singing. This is followed by a brilliant and attractively arranged track. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/belgium3.html#anchor_135 * Mesh Key Yura Yura Teikoku : Sweet Spot (JAP,rec.2005,pub.2007)***°' Tr.3, “It was a robot” 6 min Tr.9, “Soft Death” 5 min 11 -109 While having something of a pop-rock band here also this band reveals an inventive and conscious style that spans to new music, avant-garde, post-wave, post-surf and much more.. This band is popular in Japan, but deserves to be heard here as well. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/JAPANreviews.html#anchor_62 Outro : * Cuneiform Radio Massacre International : Rain Falls In Grey (UK,2007)*** Tr.4, “Syd” 4 min 113 This is supposed to be a Syd Barret influenced release as well, but it sounds more a spacepsych band with some early but mostly post-Barrett Pink Floyd influences. I can however trace “Syd” Barrett’s influence on the “Syd” track. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog22.html#anchor_277 * Sunbeam The Story : Arcane Rising (UK,2007)**° Tr.1, “A Story To Tell” 2 min Tr.8, “A Wheel Turns” 1 min Tr.9, “Awake Aware” 2 min 5 -117 Post-Forest group with simply arranged nicely harmonious songs. To some degree it reminds me of Octopus Syng in the beginning of the show, so a post-Barrett flavour into a slight psychfolk flavoured territory.
