Playlist “Psyche van het Folk”, Radio Centraal 2004-05-12 : New Psych Folk related releases part 1. * Oggum Rec. Alphane Moon :: Our Glassie Azoth, experimenting with an amen (UK,rec.1999,rei.2004)** Tr.2, “Opal Fire” 7 min This instrumental soundscape track uses the title of a Mike Burrows poem. Moody soundscapes, which they call themselves “weirdeared drone folk”. It combines noise with ambient, experimental drones, very echoed sounds of guitars etc. with some feedback-pitches and here and there acoustic meanderings. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview5.html  * September Gurls Rec. Famlende Forsok : One Night I had a frightful dream –a tribute to H.P.Lovecraft (1890-1937)- (N,2004)*** Tr.6, “the Dunwich horror” 7 min Tr.7, “The Ancient Track” 5 min 12 19 Atmospheric experimental soundscape-drones mixed with experimental neo-folk with readings of H.P.Lovecraft. Quite Gothic soundscapes with literature. The group had its origins in industrial tape-trade circles. First track uses synthesizer, interesting “bird-bubbles”-sounds, sex & reading, with some piano at the end. Also second track has a good choice of text reading. Limited LP-edition of only 500 ! Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/wyrd.html * Last Visible Dog    Dead Raven Choir : Wine, woman and wolves (POL/US,2003)**° Tr.10, “Beacons-Rubens, Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Puget, Watteau,Delacroix” (Beaudelaire) 4 min 23 The group also released recordings on the Jewelled Antler cdr label before. This is literature performed in a dark theatrical gothic experimental neo-folk way, often with whispery mad vocals. This might be the most powerful track, and the only track with double tracked vocals. It has a minimal contemporary use of banjo, harmonium, double bass (?). Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview5.html  * Last Visible Dog    Shuji Inaba: -live- The rapture of being destroyed is the flipside of the misery of destruction (JAP,2003)**°°° Tr.2, “Modern terrorism” (fragment 3 min) Tr.3, “afterimage of an echo” 5 min (read translation of “Uranium 235”) 1 min Tr.4, “Uranium 235” 9 min 19 41 Intensely emotional acid folk songs, sung like expressive beat poetry. He’s from the mountains near Hiroshima. Powerfully expressive! Not easy for everybody, but rewarding once you’re into the sense of his scenes of expressions ! With minimal avant-garde and folk elements in acoustic guitar playing. The translations of the lyrics are added. Recommended! Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/JAPANreviews.html  * Abaton Book Company Julia Vorontsova : from St.Petersburg with love (RU,2004)**°°° Tr.2, “Horshoe” 2 min Tr.3, “Streetcar” 1 min Tr.10,“Love” 4 min Tr.22,“One Kitten” 4 min 11 52 Emotionally gifted voice from Russia with straight-to-the-heart expressions & songs. Notes in English with each song are added. Especially “Love” sounds very much like the Polish Ewa Demarczyck. “One Kitten” has sung kitten sounds. Both tracks are amongst my favourite choices. Very beautiful! Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/RU2.html * Private Vladimir Semashkov : 3-track demo (2004)**° Tr.1, “Falcon (Sokol)" 3 min 55 Very nice double-tracked fingerpicking guitar & voice on this demo song. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/RU2.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Private Alphane Moon :: Our Glassie Azoth, experimenting with an amen (UK,rec.1999,rei.2004)** Tr.4, “Further” 2 min 57 This track is different as the rest, a soft acid/psych folk guitar song. The rest are moody soundscapes, in a style which they call themselves “weirdeared drone folk”. It combines noise with ambient, experimental drones and here and there acoustic meanderings. * Last Visible Dog The Birdtree : Orchards & Caravans (US,2003)*** Tr.1, “White sundials faced sun” 4 min Tr.7, “Everyone of us a new leaf” 3 min Tr.12,“Raven Returns” 2 min (=->109) 9 66 Extremely dreamy psych folk originally from the Jewelled Antler series. This is one of the least drone-like releases. Some of the inspiration still works a bit as droning folk. This project is lead by JA label owner Glenn Donaldson. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview2.html * Perun Stone Breath: The Long Lost Friend : A Patchwork (US,2004)***° * Stones Breathed: Tr.1, “Long Lost Friend (cobweb’ed version) 3 min * Stones Cast: Tr.17,“The House Carpenter” 7 min (shortened a bit) Tr.18,“The Lantern of the Greening Light” 9 min 19 85 Good compilation album on a Polish label, of outtakes on various compilations, singles, etc. Neo-folk/psych folk/Gothic folk styled with a semi-pagan inspiration. Nice ! Second voice on first track is by Sarada. More about Sarada’s solo work in a later radioshow. “House Carpenter” is one of the most alternated songs, instrumentally (banjo, amplified guitar, hand percussion, flute). Also “The Lantern..” has a beautiful relaxed psych folk improvisation style, with nice (ampl./acc.) guitars improvisations,… Great! Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview4.html * Amish Rec.          P.G.Six: The well of memory (US,2004)****° Tr.2, “Come in/The winter is past” 6 min Soundfile : http://www.perhapstransparent.com/music/sounds/pgsixcomein_clip.ram Tr.6, “Crooked Way” 4 min Tr.10, “The Weeping Willow” 4 min 100 One of the best acid folk releases of this new century to start with. First chosen track is dual vocals with banjo, some flute. P.G. is Pat Gubler, former member of drone-folk & psychedelic folk group The Tower Recordings, from which I like the first two albums too. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview5.html  * Camera Obscura Rec. Sharron Kraus: Songs of Love and Loss (UK,2004)****° Tr.2, “The Frozen Lake” 5 min Tr.3, “The Tree of knowledge” 5 min Tr.4, “Come to me” 4 min 114 Another new classic, in follow up of voices like Shirley Collins. Sharron Kraus voice & approach improved since her last two releases. Recommended! Perhaps I’ll play some other tracks in the second show too. Sharon Kraus participated before with the Iditarod. Jeffrey from Iditarod cooperated in one track and did take part in the mixing. Another participator in one song is Alec K. Redfearn (Eyeshores). Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview5.html I * Touch & Go        Nina Nastasia : Run to Ruin (US,2003)**** Tr.1, “We never talked” 3 min Tr.2, “I say that I will go” 4 min 7 121 Very good singer-songwriter release with chamber folk touches. The band on the second track reminds a bit at the Eyeshores and to what they are capable of. Steve Albini & John Peel raved about the first album. Steve Albini therefore produced this album. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html * Touch & GoNina Nastasia : Dogs (US,1999,re.2004)***° This first release will be reissued soon. It’ll get airplay in the singer- songwriter show with Lawrence Woolfe. The style of this one is melodically more recognisable for a bigger public it fits better with the ssw show instead of mine. The second more adventurous release however fitted just perfectly. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html   * 9PM Rec. Matt Everett : Once –stringsong poetry-(US,2004)**** Tr.1, “Sea Song” 5 min Tr.6, “Goodbye to all that” 4 min Matt Everet played with Eyeshores before. Also Fern Knight played with Eyeshores & Iditarod and beside that has a terrific solo-release. Here she accompanies and arranged the songs of Matt Everet beautifully & just perfectly. This is a huge step forward since the debut. Second chosen track has accordion by Matt Everett. Good release ! Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html * 9PM Rec. Mäkkelä’s Trash Lounge : Angelgold Pike’s Jaw (FIN/D,2003)**° Also this art-poppy release will given more airplay at the singer-songwriters show. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html * Listen Here! Rec. Rebecca Hall: Sunday Afternoon (US,2001)** Once guest in my show before, with B’Eirth from In Gowan Ring this is her second solo release. Her style is a mixture of Sandy Denny with some American country styled singersongwriter touches. I’ll give the release to the singer-songwriter show. * Gathering Dust Rec. Zaam : This is (B,1998, reproduced 2003)***° Tr.4, “Go ape in the Fog” 15 min Tr.3, “You a River” 9 min First, private release of this Antwerp folk psychedelic group. It’s much more folk psych as the second release, very improvised. This first airplayed track is great acid folk psych with weird background situations. Very freaked out. Nice ! Second track is more acid folk, somewhat in style of Witthüser & Westrupp. I think the CD listens best from the 4th track and then skip forward. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/belgium.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Playlist “Psyche van het Folk”, Radio Centraal 2004-05-19 : New Psych & Acid Folk related releases part 2, with a small special on Rivulets & on some Locust Music releases in this field. RIVULETS SPECIAL : Rivulets’one man band composer Nathan Amundson makes quiet introspective music with an attractive slightly hissing voice. * -(unpubl).- Rivulets : Live at “Psyche van het Folk”- (pre-recorded)****: -MD8 : “Cutter”, “Keep you from harm” 5 min (-MD11: 1 live track “Creast” 2 min) -MD25: 7 min “Wind is howling” 7 min 12 Beaiutiful & relaxed live versions ! * Bluesanct Rivulets : Thank You Reykjavik (US,2001)*** Tr.1, “Barreling…” 5 min 5 17 * Chair Kicker’s Union Inc. Rivulets : Rivulets (US,2001)*** Tr.6, “Barreling towards nowhere like there’s no tomorrow” 5 min 22 * Chair Kicker’s Union Inc. Rivulets : Débridement (US,2002)***° Tr.3, “Bridges” 4 min Tr.7, “Shakes” 3 min 7 29 For me best release so far. * Tract Rec.     Rivulets / Marc Gartman (US,2004)**°/*° Tr.9, “luf kanh 6rhak ur hrt” 4 min 33 First two live tracks I played before are also on this new split EP. I preferred to play a track of Marc Gartman instead of repeating myself. A nice, romantic version of “if only love can break your heart” (Neil Young). Reviews of these releases and soundfiles of other tracks at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/poor.html * Touch & Go Cocorosie: La Maison de mon Rêve (US,2004)**** Tr.1, «Terrible Angels » 5 min Tr.2, «By your side» 4 min Soundfile : http://server1.sxsw.com/audio/sxsw04/mp3hi/CocoRosie-By_Your_Side.mp3 or http://www.tgrec.com/hijk/mp3/coco/CocoRosie-By_Your_Side.mp3 Tr.3, «Jesus loves me» 3 min 12 45 Soundfile : http://www.tgrec.com/hijk/mp3/coco/CocoRosie-Jesus_Loves_Me.mp3 Or http://www.tgrec.com/hijk/mp3/coco/CocoRosie-Jesus_Loves_Me.mp3 Great individual & self-conscious release !! First track is like the female Devendra Banhart. Recommended ! Surreal skilfully sung poetic theatrical & cynical pop songs. This is supposed to be recorded in a Paris hotel room. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html * Locust Media Born Heller: Born Heller (US,2004)***** Tr.1, “I want to” 3 min Soundfile : http://www.locustmusic.com/audio/bh1.mp3 Tr.2, “No more lamps in the morning” 4 min Soundfile : http://www.locustmusic.com/audio/bh2.mp3 Tr.5, “I am a guest in here” 5 min Soundfile : http://www.locustmusic.com/audio/bh5.mp3 Tr.6, “Lulu Follows” 4 min Soundfiles : http://www.locustmusic.com/audio/bh6.mp3 Tr.7, “First Kiss” 2 min 18 65 Best acid folk from 2004 release I heard so far. Fragile Shirley Collins like vocals. Accompaniment of acoustic guitar, harp & mandolin in folk style or in a minimal avant garde style with acid folk flavour. A must-have. Solo release from female White Willow singer. Goes a little bit back to the folk flavour of the first White Willow album, or even more back to that folk flavoured essence. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/folk.html * Acony Bell Rec.   Bumble B. : Flight of the bumble B. (N,2004)***° acd-Tr.10=11, “Varuluv-feat.Tsoi” 3 min This track is more in follow up of the folkrock style of Folque. acd-Tr14=15, “Lova, Lova Line” 3 min Track with sitar. acd-Tr.17=18, “Signa Lita” 4 min 10 87 Nice combination of the soft psych of Smell Of Incense group with a folk song. This LP is mostly Norwegian folk by this Smell of Incense singer. I took out the three most progressive tracks. Most of it is much more in Norwegian folk style. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/folk.html * Locust Music Cyann & Benn : Spring (F,2004)****° Tr.2, “I can’t pretend any more” 5 min Soundfile : http://www.locustmusic.com/audio/C&B2.mp3 Tr.3, “Selected Ambient Work” 3 min Soundfile : http://www.locustmusic.com/audio/c&b3.mp3 Tr.4, “Siren Song” 7 min 15 102 Soundfile : http://www.locustmusic.com/audio/c&b4.mp3 Sweet & pastoral electronica with acoustic elements & flavour art-pop. Skilful And captivating ! Second playlist will be finished soon. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar3.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Outro (used to start the singer-songwriter’s show) : * Last Call Rec. Isabel Para : Antologia (CHI,rec.1962-1995, rei.2004)***° CD1Tr.4, “Porque los pobres no tienen” 3 min CD2Tr.6, «En la frontera» 4 min CD2,Tr10,«Como dos Rios» 4 min 11 Classic & celebrated singer-songwriter folk voice from the Chilean “new song” tradition, highly involved some kind of heart-felt socialism & personal emotional involvements associated with it. This release gives an overview of her career. Listens perhaps best as compilation than in taking out tracks without understanding the texts. These tracks are taken out for its emotional value. The second live song is accompanied with English translation.
