"Psyche van Het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen Playlist : new folktronica, exp. folk, s/sw, acid folk, folkrock : 2005-9-28 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. folktronica * Moteer Clickits : Express Gifts (UK,2005)***°/**** Tr.9, “…For sure,I’ll be buried at sea” 3 min Tr.2, “Wheneveryouready” 5 Tr.3, “Lilipohone” 5 min 13 Beautiful folk/jazztronica with clicks, bleeps and real instruments. Beautiful 21st century music. Kind of city-campfire music. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/prog13.html * Private Kippi Kaninus : Happens Secretely (ICE,2005)***° Tr.1, “The Comfort of my eyes” 6 min Tr.5, “Puere, softer, deader ?” 5 min Tr.6, “Yfirskin” 7 min 16 -30 Another great artist and composer in the same genre of ambient folktronica. A few tracks, like track 5 uses some organ recordings. 6th track has some Middle Eastern singing on the background and varied percussion. There’s enough evolution and acoustic elements to be convincing. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/prog13.html * Leaf Rec. Colleen : Everyone Alive Wants Answers (F/UK,2003)**** Tr.1, “Everyone alive wants answers” 5 min Tr.2, “Ritournelle” 3 min Tr.3, “Carry-cot” 2 min 10 -40 Beautiful loop-like acoustic compositions and evolutions, which are very feminine. Second track is with looped orchestration. Every track sounds like an Alice-in-Wonderland musical box of dreams. “Carry-Cot” is a children recording with heartbeat and looped acoustic guitar, like a snippet from a personal diary. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/psychfolkpopreview3.html 2. experimental folk * Fonal Rec. Kemialliset Ystävät : Lumottu Karkkipurkki (FIN,2005)*° Rather chaotic and blurry experimental folk, multilayered and often descriptive, but a bit too chaotic and accidental to be as moody as it could be. This is an example of the edge or limit of where I quit liking the genre. I prefer more harmony and focus. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/finland.html * Fonal Rec. Paavoharju : Yhä Hämärää (FIN,rec.2001-2005)***° Tr.3, «Kuu Lohduttaa Huolestüneita» 4 min Tr.4, «Syvyys» 3 min Tr.5, «Puhuri» 4 min Tr.8, «Vitivalkoinen» 2 min Tr.9, «Kuljin Kauas» 4 min Tr.11,«Musta Katu» 4 min 21 -61 This starts with rather experimental soundscapes with lots of descriptive elements. Female singer has in some way something Asian. Ashame the recording has a few errors (due to cdr copying ?). A few tracks, like “Pughuri” remind me a bit of Pierrot Lunaire’s Gudrun. Many of the tracks I chose I like a lot. Track 9 is a more upbeat emotional indie-rock track with its own subtleties. Also track 11 is similar, with modern pop abilities. Very good. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/finland.html 3. s/sw * Bonte Koe Rec. In Julia’s Mind Scene (NL,2005)**** Tr.1, “Quest” 2 min Tr.2, “Feel the warmth that’s given” 4 min Tr.3, “Stonerage” 9 min 14 -75 Splendid, perfect & recommended jazz-warm acoustic singer-songwriter album. Warm voice and playing of group. Think of early John Martin or so, with more chamber- like arrangements. I played the complete A side of this LP. Review : http://www.singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-7.html * Asthm.Kitty Rec. Sufjan Stevens : Come on feel the Illinoise (US,2005)****' Tr.1, “Concerning the UFO sighting near Highland, Illinois” 2 min Tr.2, “The Black Hawk War,…” 3 min Tr.4, “John Wayne Gacy,jr.” 4 min 9 Tr.21, “Riffs and variations on a single note for Jerry Roll, Earl Hines, Louis Armstrong, Baby Dodds, and the King Of Swing, to name a few” 1 min Tr.22, “Out of Egypt, into the great laugh of mankind, and I shake the dirt from my sandals as I run” 5 min (shorter) Splendid musical concept, highly recommended kind of musical. Last two track are like a variation on in C from Terry Riley. Review : http://www.singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-3.html * Suilven Rec. Daniel Patrick Quinn : Ridin’the stang (UK,2005)**’ Tr.5, “Channelkirk and the surrounding area” 4 min Melancholic minimalism with folk flavour and stories-on-the-shore mood. Link to review will be added soon. * Ulrike Rec. The Finches : Six Songs (US,2005)*** Tr.3, “Daniel’s Song” 5 min -99 Collection of simple and honest, integer songs. Review : http://www.singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-7.html 4. Acid folk : * private Josephine Foster : A Diadem -4 track EP- (US,2005)****° Tr.1, “Wondrous Love” 5 min Tr.3, “Oh Bright Eyed One” (COB) 4 min Tr.4, “Eilleen Aroon” 4 min 13 -112 Everything from Josephine Foster is a pearl and so is this. Highly recommended delicate almost-melancholic sensitivity and beauty. One of the best private releases of Josephine so far. J.F. is a unique voice with folk association. Review : http://www.singersong.homestead.com/folk2.html * Locust Music Espers : The Weed Tree (US,2005)****’ Tr.2, “Tomorrow” 5 min Tr.3, “Black is the color” 6 min Tr.5, “Blue Mountain” 5 min Tr.6, “Flaming Telepaths” 10 min 26 -138 Perfect album within the folk tradition and with so many beautiful elements. A folk/acid folk classic. Couldn’t airplay less. “Flaming Telepaths” has a delicate emotional richness and a beautiful equally effective psychedelic outro. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview5.html 5. folkrock : * Rise Above Rec. Circulus : The lick on the tip of an envelope yet to be sent (UK,2005)**** Tr.3, “The Scarecrow” 5 min Tr.7, “The Aphid” 6 min For time left : Tr.9, “Power to the Pixies” 6 min Great, strong and recommended progressive folk with folkrock influence. Recommended to Trees fans and such. “The Aphid” is much more like instrumental “progressive/psychedelic rock”.
