Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium 2002-03-27 Concept : Progressive music in BRASIL (with folk influences): -(mostly new items)- 1. 60's : * Omplatten Os Mutantes (BRAZ,1968)***** Tr.1, " Panis et Circensis " 4 min Tr.2, " A Minha Menina " 5 min 9 This is the most original record I heard from them. Very happy sounding mix of Latin American rhythms, funny acoustic ideas, 60's psych beat. Difficult to listen to the complete score because here I am attracted by the so many bright ideas in small details involved. A must have heard. 2. 80's : * Rarity Bacamarte : Depois Do Fim (BRAZ,1983)****° Tr.2, "Smog Alado" 5 min Tr.1, "UFO", 7 min Tr.6, "Ultimo entardecer" 10 min Tr.7, "Controversia" 2 min 25 35 Very Italian symphonic sounding item with very beautiful emotional female vocals. Complex progressive music with Latin American touches, interesting keyboards. * Sonho e sons Sagrado Coraçao da terra (BRAZ,1984)**° Tr.3, "Arte do sol" Feliz" 5 min 10 45 Although its first short track starts with awful neo symphonic prog the rest is good. Most of the good compositions are made by the violin. Synths are luckily not on the front any more. At later CD's the group will use much more synths and melodic symphonic elements. These were more bombastic melodic and less interesting for my kind of taste. But also here is a slightly theatre feel in a direction that might but does not yet become melodic dramatic. 3. New progressive * Odisséia Rec. Marcio Rocha : Juno (BRAZ,2000)***° Tr.1, "Samadhi" 1 min Tr.2, "Desolation of fools" 7 min Tr.5, "Concertino" 9 min Tr.7, "Instante" 5 min (+ singing) 22 77 Violin and classical guitar based compositions, somewhat symphonic, with an original style. With additions of some other mostly acoustic instruments, (Spanish guitar, sitar,etc.). Marcio is a member of Luz da Asia and is joined by members of Tempus Fugit, Anima Dominum and Luz Da Asia. Review : http://www.rockprogressivo.com.br/colunas/prognoise/nov00/marcio.htm * Azul Rec. Luz da Asia : Amistad (BRAZ,1999)***° Tr.1, "Amistad" 6 min Tr.6, "Cancone de Israel" 6 min 12 90 Very pleasant world fusion, mostly Indian but with some Arabian and some other influences. Most original is the first track that uses a variety of World music (sitar and flamenco)in a nice acoustic fusion. The rest is in fresh style without being very progressive. Also the Indian styled version of the most famous Jewish song ("Sjaloom ..")is very original. Most of the cd is pleasant Indian flavoured world music with a Brazilean warmth. Although This way a bit more melodic, the complexity and refinement are very fine. Some similarities, like with voice of the Polish Quidam. With cooperation of members from Bacamarte, Topos Uranos, Quaterna Requiem, Solar. There's a happy warmth in it (like in Quidam) and pictures of People involved reveal this energy. This symphonic one is still less defined/clearly idea structured as second, with some more easy folk as well, good electronic/symphonic, good rhythms,.. and a fantastic Latin American full orchestra band (track 9). http://www.watcher.cl/bandas/vb.html http://tinpan.fortunecity.com/collins/92/vb.html with sound http://musicven.com/vytasbrenner/ Tormenta de Barlovento : http://musicven.com/vytas2.ram Audio http://www.kinesiscd.com/vytas_ram.htm This item : http://www.anesrecords.com/catalogo/unitarios/vytasbrener2.htm Later group is Ofrenda http://www.borderlinebooks.com/latiname/o1.html More info : http://progressive.homestead.com/VEN_UR_PAR_PROG.html * Leg.from Ur Armando Tirelli : El Profeta (UR,1878)***° Tr.1, "Prologo el profeta" 9 min Tr.2, "Candombe Samba" 5 min 14 67 Fantastic for it's concept, symphonic music but at the same time not much changes after the second track. It starts powerful, slightly in Italian symph. Style with a Latin flavour. More info : http://progressive.homestead.com/VEN_UR_PAR_PROG.html * Musea Ergo Sum : Mexico (CL?,1970/72)***° 1970: Tr.1, "Mexico" 4 min Tr.2, "I know your mother" 9 min Tr.4, "Lydie" 2 min Tr.5, "Night Road" 4 min 1971: Tr.10, "All's so comic" 6 min 1972: Tr.11, "Tijuana" 4 min Nice prog rock with special rough voice. The group evolves into even more interesting jazz fusion prog. I wonder in what masterpiece they could have or would evolve after this.. http://www.gepr.net/em.html#ERGOSUM More info, links at http://progressive.homestead.com/CHILI_PROG.html * Bug Music Man : Undrugged (US,2002)** Tr.1, "Scotch Corner" 5 min Tr.2, "Babe, I'm gone leave" 5 min Man-webpage : http://www.manband-archive.com/index.html & http://homepage.ntlworld.com/willsont/Man/man_news.htm http://www.rockrelics.co.uk/artists/man.htm This release : http://www.manband-archive.com/discography/undrugged.php http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palms/3201/undruged.html A surprising end 60's style album with some drugs inspiration, very powerfully played of acoustic songs at first tracks : for fans of 60's and early '70's pop stuff this approach is terrific. However there are also various bluesy and more just ok ordinary pop songs after this. NEW BRAZILEAN ITEMS : * Private True Illusion II (BRAZ,2000)*** Tr.1, "Mare" 6 min Tr.6, " O genio " 6 min Tr.7, "Sutil" 5 min (fragment) Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/BRAZILREVIEW.html & http://www.cranium.co.nz/newslett/Cranium_Music_Newsletter52.txt Relaxed trance improvisations (uncomposed or slightly jazzbarlike moody) jazzfusion progressive, professionally produced. Nice addition by guest sax player. * Private Semente (2000)*** Tr.5, " Mundo Guerreiro " 9 min Review, links : http://progressive.homestead.com/BRAZILREVIEW.html Symphonic inspired progressive. Very good balanced, slightly stretched by some improvisation. * Private Experimental : demo (CL,1999)*° Tr.3, "Japan" (fragment) 5 min Some Hackett/Andy Somers like ideas. Not much evolving ideas as basic structure, but ok as result. * All The Best R. Alex Saba : Angel's Dream (BRAZ,1996)** Tr.7, "Harlekin" 5 min Tr.15, "Minueto (part 1 & 2)" 4 min Personal homestudio guitar composition based instrumental relaxed prog Contact : alexsaba@pobox.com * Private Alpha III : (demo of) Sombras (1986/2002)* Tr.1, "Sombras" 2 min Tr.2, "Patmos I" 4 min 116 Tr.3, "Patmos III (O mestre)" 5 min 10 Very Genesis inspired slightly melodic prog on these first interesting and really fine tracks.
