Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerp, Belgium : 2005-03-9 : OTTOMAN CROSSOVERS PART 1 : EUROPEAN MEDIEVAL & TRADITIONS * Private The New Scorpion Band : The Downfall of Pears (UK,2004)***° Tr.10, "Lord Bateman" 14 min (shortened to 11 min) Varied arrangements on this English traditional with beside English, also Middle Eastern elements. It's about a travel towards Turkey and beyond. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/folkrock.html * Jaro Sarband : Music of the Emperors (D,1992)**°° Tr.11, "Lamento di Tristano" 8 min -20 (slightly shortened) Music of the emperors shows Arab & Medieval music from big emperors who had often court musicians in a mix all kinds of styles from all over their empire. The CD doesn't prove the stylistic mix, but plays Middle Eastern & Medieval music, mostly with the same ensemble. The Middle Eastern pieces on this album are perhaps not the best imaginable interpretations of this music, but it is good as introduction example. I like very much like the Middle eastern version of 'Lamento di Tristano', a very logical interpretation if you hear it this way. This interpretation is a must- have heard interpretation for people interested in the true sense and essence of medieval music. Some Turkish musicians participated. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview2.html * Soulstar VA : Made in Turkey (TÜ,2004)*°°° CD1, Tr.18, "Rondo alla Turca" 3 min Finally not a ridiculous childish-melodic Mozart, but an interpretation going towards the essence of the Middle Eastern interpretation of this "tune". PS. I am one of the only persons in the world who heard playing an automatic instrument made especially for Mozart with a composition designed for the instruments that were in it, and I can assure you Mozart is not about silly melody. The colour of sound balance was as much important. The group Sarband has great respect for the Ottoman tradition which they say is the most living European tradition compared to medieval or even older European music. Review of compilation : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/TURKCOMPI.html PART 2 : OTTOMAN TRADITIONS : * Colors Music Ottomanic (TÜ/IRQ,IR,EG,2005)***°’ Tr.8, Amhed Mukhtar & Sattar Al-Saadi : “Raqsat Albedoi" 6 min Tr.9 Mohammad Reza Shajarian & Khayhan Kalhor : "Desert Night" 3 min Tr.11, Soliman Gamil : "Sufi Dialogue" 6 min 15 -38 Two ottoman styled instrumentals played terrifically by an Iraqi, a Persian and an Egyptian group. Review of compilation : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/TURKCOMPI.html * Soulstar VA : Made in Turkey (TÜ,2004)**°° CD1. Tr.14, Ali Ekber Cicek : "Haydar Haydar" 5 min -43 Beautiful Sufi traditional on saz, almost like Ottoman blues. PART 3 : OTTOMAN (JAZZ) FUSIONS / CROSSOVERS : * Soulstar VA : Made in Turkey (TÜ,2004)*°°° CD1. Tr.3, Omar Faruk Tekbilek & Steve Shehan : "Dron't Cry my love" 5 min Arabesue singing with Turkish percussion and “groovy” double bass. * Jaro Okay Temiz Magnetic Band : Magnetic Orient (TÜ,2002)**° Tr.4, "Kurdish Ali" 6 min Much of the CD is a mixture between Turkish, Kurdish, Gypsy, Klezmer and jazz, not always in the blend, because often one of the traditional elements comes more forward. This track compromises a bit, with coloured percussion. My favourite Okay Temiz album still is the first LP with the Karnataca College of Percussion. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview2.html * Soulstar VA : Made in Turkey (TÜ,2004)*°°° CD1.Tr.17, Kudsi Erguner with Halil Necipoglu : "Twins" 9 min 60 Sufi music with jazz fusion touch. The electric Saz has Ottoman & jazz style mixed. Also double bass and so on is more jazz orientated. Beautiful traditional with modern effect and production. * Colors Music Ottomanic (TÜ/IRQ,IR,EG,2005)***°’ Tr.10, Kudsi Erguner : "Sarki" 7 min A similar track by the same musician. * Soulstar VA : Made in Turkey (TÜ,2004)*°°° CD1.Tr.12, Mercan Dede featuring Sabahat Akkiraz : "Ab-i Cesm" 6 min 73 Good mixture of Sufi, Ottoman and touches of modern mixing elements by Sufi DJ/musician Mercan Dede, here with an occasional singer. * Colors Music Ottomanic (TÜ/IRQ,IR,EG,2005)***°’ Tr.12, Mercan Dede Secret Tribe : "Nar-i-Ney" 10 min Sufi music mixed with some Indian music sample, very rhythmic. (with some electric violin, Sufi singing, electric guitar, etc..). * Colors Music Ottomanic (TÜ/IRQ,IR,EG,2005)***°’ Tr.1, Burhan Öçal & Tracky All Stars : "Tekirdag Kars Llamasi" 7 min (shortened to 6 min) 89 Repetitive melody, but nice combination of tradition with complex new beats. * AW Pete Namlook & Burhan Öçal : Sultan-Osman (UK/TÜ,1999)? Instrumental album. There are a few collaborations of this duo. See end of show for airplay. PART 4 : OTTOMAN POP/DANCE : * Soulstar VA : Made in Turkey (TÜ,2004)*°°° CD1, Tr.2, Ilhan Ersahin featuring Dilara Sakpinar : "Fly" 4 min 99 Modern pop with important fusion influence of jazz & Ottoman. * Soulstar VA : Made in Turkey (TÜ,2004)*°°° CD1. Tr.6, Nil Karaibahimgil : "Bencil" 4 min 93 Very arranged pop song with many elements in a modern form & very filmic descriptive. * Soulstar VA : Made in Turkey (TÜ,2004)*°°° CD2, Tr.9, Ragga Oktay : "Derinoy" 5 min 98 Somewhat interesting new form of hiphop ottoman music, with an idea how to mix it. The composition is a bit simple dance music, but I found the ideas are interesting enough to airplay this. * Soulstar VA : Made in Turkey (TÜ,2004)*°°° CD2, Tr.10, Fuat Saka : "Rapatma4" 4 min 102 An even more interesting mix (Ottoman/Indian or whatever, with violins too). A new form of for me for the first time very acceptable Ottoman kind of rap. Both examples mix ethnic rhythm in the rap, which is a splendid idea. * Soulstar VA : Made in Turkey (TÜ,2004)*°°° CD2, Tr.11, Altay : "Kocari" 5 min Tr.15, Ciguli : "Binnaz" (remix) 5 min Tr.16, Turkish Delight : "Oh De" 5 min 15 -117 Both first tracks are dance related, mainstream, modern beats mix with traditional elements. Very danceable and enjoyable, successful for all its elements. Last track is a very good, closer of fusion between dance music and a traditional instrumental. * Mega Müzik Harem IV : Rhythm Forever (TÜ,2004)**°° Tr.2, "Sunshine" 5 min Tr.4, "Enti Omri" 4 min Tr.7, "La Passion Turca" 5 min 131 Dance related group based upon ideas of 4 Turkish percussionists with help of some DJ's. First track has Turkish percussion with hard beats, and some violin ensemble arrangements. Also second track with complex beats has orchestrations, besides a recognisable traditional melody. Very energetic. Also the splendid titletrack with oud, electric violin and lots of percussion, some other arrangements is very energetic and danceable. A few other tracks are too sex- beat and fat beat related to be as much convincible as this one. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview1.html * AW Pete Namlook & Burhan Öçal : Sultan-Osman(UK/TÜ,1999)*°° Tr.2, part 2 (fragment) 4 min Tr.4, part IV (fragment 3 min) 7 -138 Instrumental album, somewhat consitent, as a musical story. The first track is with lots of Turkish percussion. There are a few collaborations of this duo. Most complex rhythmic track of the album. See end of show for airplay. Instrumental album. The 4th part is with lots of Turkish percussion. There are a few collaborations of this duo. Music has a certain monotony but also a fine flavour. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html * Double Moon Rec.  Orient Expressions : Divan (TÜ,2004)*°°° Tr.5, “Dera Sor” 6 min 145 Traditional with modern DJ with musicians remixed arrangements Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview2.html * Colors Music Ottomanic (TÜ/IRQ,IR,EG,2005)**°° Tr.4, Baba Zula : "Su Daglari Sardi Feryadim" 7 min (fragment) 150 Old Ottomanic ideas are completely mixed upside down in modern complexity rhythms with this psych Fusion group. Review of Baba Zula releases : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html NOT PLAYED MOSTLY BECAUSE OF TIME LIMITATIONS : OTTOMAN PSYCH : demo version Dinar Bandosu : "Saykodelikzede Mahmut Efendi" 11 min "Ottoman IS psychedelic music" according to this group. Ali Ece about the track : “It's symbolising the rise and fall of the ottoman empire. I invented an imaginary Pasha (high officer close to the Ottoman K1ng) whose mission was conquering the lands of India and Afghanistan but when he goes to India and Afghanistan he tastes some kind of natural psychedelic drugs and he's touched by them. At the end he left being a pasha and prefers freeing her mind and when he comes back to Istanbul the Ottoman empire is already dead and the new turkey is born.” The group almost got a contract for a release, but psych effects of the group then were not appreciated. PS. The text writer of the group just won a literature prize for his first book.)
