Playlist “Psyche van Het Folk”, Radio Centraal,Antwerpen New and old psychedelica * Blue Cube Music The Gak Omek : Alien Eye (US,2003)**° Tr.1, “Black Holes colliding” 11 min (part 1 -> 7 min) This is what I call house-psych or house-made psych. Keyboards and electric guitars only. For this difficult style this is quite good, structured and with some power and strength. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog4.html * Blue Cube Music The Gak Omek : Return of the all-powerful light beings (US,2004)**° Tr.3, “Cydonia” 11 min (shortened to 8 min) Second release in a similar style. Perhaps improved in the totality of the sound. Still if the drummachines would be replaced by real drumming it would have been much better. 20 Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog4.html * Oho Music V.A. Best of Baltimore’s Buried Bands (US,1974-2003)***° CD1 : Tr.3, Outragous (1975) : “Letter from Kevin” 5 min Tr.5, Outragous : “Madman Serenade” 3 min Tr.6, Outragous : “The Laughing Man” 4 min (Operatic symphonic rock) Tr.12, Elf Park (1975) : “Queen of Ice” 7 min (early Queen inspired progrock) Tr.15, Grok (1973) : “We never wanted 5 min (hardrock and a countryrock part) Tr.16, Steakhouse (2002) : “Vino Miranda” 5 min (prog post-rock with good guitar arrangements) Tr.18, Richard Lake (1972) : “Fly By Night” 1 min (short kind of joke recording) Tr.20 : Trance Figures (2000) : “Peradam” 3 min 33 -53 CD2 : Tr.2, Blammo (1990) : “No working title” 4 min (symphonic with a slight progmetal influence) Tr.3, Neige (1979-1980): “Arthur Fiedler” 7 min Tr.4, Neige : “Pieces of leaves” 7 min (progrock with Canterbury & jazzrock influences) Tr.10, Klangfarb (1977) : “L.S.E. (Bob’s Funky Tune)” 2 min 20 (advanced electronica) One of the best and most consistent V.A. compilations of progressive rock I know of, with good contribution of new groups too. Listens best from beginning to end. Musically it is almost like a must, and surely very good or like what ones expects to come more from the best groups. Remarkable also is that newer and older groups derived the same quality & sphere of progressive rock. ‘Mark & Woolfeman” will do a Oho special later. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog5.html * MCA Silver Apples (US, 1968)****° Tr.4, “Program” 5 min Tr.5, “Velvet Cave” 4 min Tr.6, “Whirly Bird” 3 min Tr.7, “Dust” 4 min Tr.8, “Dancing Gods” 6 min (shortened) 4 min 22 Great reissue of one of the better, more weird mindxpanding US psych releases. One of the unique genius psych releases for me amongst the midst of pioneer experimenters like some fragments of Fifty Foot Hose’s “Cauldron or White Noise’s “Electric Storm” and amongst the more adventurous US psych. Also interesting to German Krautrock fans, like Brainticket, which I consider all somewhat likewise inspired, even when this is some kind of “rhythmical”. Almost impossible for me to leave out any of these tracks for airplay. Especially after second track of this album, this is an incredible piece of art. Oscillator and electronica mixed with psychrock in a weird combination. It’s in some ways really ahead its time. Related bonus track from * EMI Silver Apples’ “Oscillations” (1999) : Blur : “Battle“ (fragment) 7 min Good interpretation mix of the Silver Apples sound into our modern, techno times. * MCA Silver Apples : Contact (US,1969) ***°° Tr.1, “You and I” 4 min Tr.7, “A Pox on you” 6 min Tr.8, “Confusion” 4 min Tr.9, “Fantasies” 6 min 22 Second release a bit more rhythmical, still very individual, unusual unreal. The first album still is my favourite. Really odd gem, this one too. For some tracks this still is way ahead of its time. More info : http://www.silverapples.com/ * Weasel Disc Rec. Fifty Foot Hose : Cauldron (US,1967?)**°°° Tr.9, “Fantasy” 11 min Tr.11, “Cauldron” 5 min 16 There are some mind-expanding fragments on this one making this release a must have for every psych collector. Its all documented with a photo of the session in the Winter 2003-2004 #76 issue of Jimpress Magazine: http://www.jimpress.co.uk/jimpress.htm Thanks, Simeon for the bonus tracks * Owl Head Man Music Portal : the common ground of Franks, Malgeri & Pauciello (I,re.2004)**** Tr.1, “Portal” 14 min Tr.13, “Voodoo Chile” 6 min Recommended guitar-psych reissue. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/prog5.html#anchor_97 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Outro used with permission in “Mark & The Woolfeman” : * Black Widow Antonius Rex : Magic Ritual (I,2005)**** Tr.1, “soundtrack” 22 min -150 Classical music loops (choir & orchestrations) mixed with kind of hardrock, Gothic prog, moog improvisation and electric guitar solo, which works like progressive rock with the tension of a horror movie.
