Playlist “Psyche van Het Folk”, Radio Centraal, Antwerpen : 2004-04-28 -Mostly new releases progressive avant-psych, “space” psych,…- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Fiasko Rec. Gnomus : II (FIN,rec.2003,iss.2004)***° Tr.2, “Hypnos” 11 min 11 New release of this (-perhaps one of Finland’s most-) interesting avant- (experimental ambient)-fusion-prog group. With Magma-esque bass drive, splendid jazz drumming. Great track! Review & links : http://progressive.homestead.com/FINLAND_GROUPS.html * Cuneiform Rec. The Claudia Quintet : I, Claudia (US,2004)***° Tr.1, “Just like him” 7 min 17 Jazz-group, lead by drummer who has more modern-styled influences in composing. Review & links : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog5.html * Cuneiform Rec.    Richard Pinhas : Tranzition (F,2004)***°° Tr.2, “Moumoune Girl (a song for)” 7 min(=fragment) Tr.4, “Aboulafia Blues” 7 min 14 31 A consistent release, I think with an improved result since “Schizotrope”: moody guitar-& electronica-looped trance-psych music. First track has a cyber/literature voice. Very good. Review & links : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog5.html * Spalax Rec. Richard Pinhas : Stand By (F,1978)***** Tr.1, “Standby” 15 min 46 From the most “rock” period of Pinhas, and still my favourite of his works. Recently reissued by Cuneiform Records. Starts with freaky guitars, with relaxed drums & heavy bass, with a second part of mostly repetitive bass & drums in faster rhythm, with in third part lead of electronic sequencers & electric guitar improvisations, with one Magma reminiscent melodic change within the repetition lines, and even more changes in direction. Fantastic track, with strong structure and musical drive. Unique ! Heldon : 6 –interface- (F,1977,1978)***°° Tr.7, “Interface-live (part2)” 3 min 50 My second favourite album, with the very heavy electronica / progrock title- tracks. Unfortunately I only had time to play this short track. Review : http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/h/heldon/interface.shtml * Cuneiform Rec.        Guapo : Five Suns (UK,2004)***° Tr.2, “Five Suns” -part 2- 11 min Soundfile : http://aquariusrecords.org/audio/guapofivesuns2.m3u Tr.3, ‘Five Suns” –part 3- 6 min (fragment) Soundfile : http://aquariusrecords.org/audio/guapofivesuns3.m3u Tr.8, “Topan” 7 min 24 75 Strong evolution of this group! With clearly Magma references, in a less complex (rhythmical) way, -but still appealing-, in fact with a more psych-rock kind of drive in composing/improvising/playing. Review & links : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog2.html * Private J.M.Nasim : -The psychedelic Jew’s Harp- Reality Substrate (US,2003)***° Tr.1, “Unity” 6 min 80 Soundfile : http://www.cdbaby.com/mp3lofi/jmnasim-01.m3u Trancepsych with electrified Jew’ harp mostly. This first track has the strongest sound. A fantastic track, surely if this is only (multi-layered) jews’harp being played ! Review & links : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog5.html * Lollipop(pe) Shop(pe) Sloterdijk : Integration (NL,2000)**° Tr.8, «Cyrogenics» 13 min 93 Space-jamming psych group. This track with Genesis P.Orridge reminiscent narration & psych keyboard & bass improvisations is wonderful ! I wanted to play one more track, but I had some time limitations. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/holland.html * Purple Plazma Rec. Purple Void : “Aardvark” (NL,2004)** Tr.4, “Spanish Highway” 8 min 8 101 Guitar dominated improvisations accompanied by drums, bass. Promising but because of some lack of varied musical structures in the tracks I still prefer to see a bigger advanced project with more individual contrasting creativity one day. This track is the most moody of the improvisations on this release, and is very good as it is (***). Only a shame it’s recorded rather primitively (minidisk?). Therefore I’ll invite the group to the radioshow for a live on air performance later this year. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/holland.html * Private Mark Christopher Lee : Away with the Fairies (UK/B,2004)***°’ Tr.2, “The Gold of Fairnilee” 18 min Tr.4, “The Golden Bough” 13 min 31 131 Highly recommended psych/prog !! Especially these two –terrific- tracks are inspired by “The Golden Bough” (a book by JG Frazer which inspired the Wicker Man film). Style : a bit like a (70’s) Floydian inspiration. Mark is more known in Belgium with his poprock band The Pocket Gods, but this is progressive/psychedelic stuff !! Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog5.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- outro : * Epic Trettioariga Kriget (S,1974)***° Tr.1, “Kaledoniska Orogenesen” 6 min 137 It takes a bit too long before I can do my next show on Swedish prog, so here’s another great example of 70’s Swedish prog. Mostly this is very good song orientated (hard) prog-rock. The opener however is even stronger & more complex hard-(prog)-rock, with nice tempo & theme changes. Song oriented prog-rock sound with heavy guitars, and good compact arrangements, or more relaxed song oriented prog-rock. This track is very good ambient psych, with some controlled broody distorted background space vibrations near the end. Second track is completely distorted madness. Last track is another ambient psych bonus track. It took some time for me to get into this. But now I really like this.
