Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium Radioshow about new guitarists, part 2. 1. NADAKA, Indian guitarist * Rain Tree Rec. Nadaka : The Lotus Trilogy (IND,2000) ***° : Meditation 1 : "The lotus of the quiet mind" ***° -with guitar played like sitar Tr.2, "Bayragi, part 1" (morning raga) 9 min The CD as a whole is very meditative. I choose the guitar related track. I call this first CD the 'come to your place of meditation'. Meditation 2 : "The lotus of the silent deep" ***° -with Tibetan monks, gong Tr.1, "The souls voyage" 6 min 15 A perfect, impressive track of Tibetan monks with gong. The 'inner vision' meditation CD. Meditation 3 : The lotus of the open heart -with guitar, violin Tr.4, "White Swan" 8 min 23 A more Indian devotional relaxing CD. I call this the 'human touch'-place in the world- meditation CD. * Rain Tree Rec. Nadaka & Ganesh : Straight to your heart (IND,1993)***° ° Part 1, guitar & violin Tr.5, 2 min later with more percussion Tr.6, 3 min guitar (& percussion) Tr.7, 4 min 9 (°Part 2, with bass,perc.,guit.,exot.: Tr.15, 6 min (shortened to 5 min)) 9/14 37 Based upon classical Indian music the guitar style of Nadaka is a fusing exploration into opening up territories. Second part I choose is the example of a more exotic world fusion folk piece, with thumb piano, percussion, guitar. * Rain Tree Rec. Nadaka : Celebration (IND,1998)**° Here the style of Nadaka an his companions is a bit more independent. I preferred not to play anything from this, and give more attention to the following release : * Rain Tree Rec. Nadaka & The Basavaraj Brothers : Living Colours (IND,2002)**** a hamsadwani raga in 8/4 Tr.1,2 "Hamsa Leela" 9 min (tilang raga in 4/4-with sitar,..)Tr.4, "Rangavati, part 2" 7 min) with guitar & kanjira Tr.9, "Chakra part 3" 5 min with sitar & tabla Tr.11, "Chakra, part 5" 5 min with guitar & tehai Tr.17, "Surya Shakti" 3 min 27 64 First 2 tracks are a beautiful raga in classical Indian style. Second chosen part is interesting for its splendid guitar. Also the 'Chakra' part shows the fusing guitar technique. This is Nadaka's most interesting Indian music fusion release. A recommended release. Reviews from the Nadaka releases : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/nadaka.html 2. OTHER NEW GUITARISTS : All releases have reviews at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar2.html * Ozella Music Böhm,Reuter,Lantos : String Unit (D,2000)***° Tr.1, "Indiaespara" 6 min Tr.3, "Circle" 6 min 12 76 The firstly played track is a really great Indian Fusion track with guitar & bass guitar, violin, a track which fits well in the concept. Good moody music, which will appeal to fans of the ECM label. * Ozella Music Dagobert Böhm : Circle Around (D,1999)***? Tr.1, "Open Air" 3 min 80 Beautiful guitar melody from guitar based release. Style in general is more fusion than this. (See review for my detailed opinion). * Ant-Man Music Antony De Gennaro : Acoustic Sensation (US-wa,2003)*** Tr.2, "Interstellar Space" 8 min 88 Very consistent release in all directness of expression and improvising ? inspiration. Well produced with perfectly fitting echo effects. * Plain Rec. Various Artists : You can never go fast enough (US,2003)**° Tr.1, Sandy Bull : "Little Maggie" 5 min Beautiful and skilfully played banjo melody. Tr.9, Suntanama : "Parallels" 6 min Another beautiful track. Simple and fine, in two parts/ with two themes. With a half acoustic rock band. Wish I knew more about this band. Tr.4, Galexico : "No Doze" 4 min 15 103 Acoustic guitar, electric guitar effects, drums. A beautiful, more 'lonely feeling' track. * Private Nick Thompson : Lend me your ears (US-ma,2002)**** Tr.1, "Serenading the L Train" 6 min Tr.3, "Two Taylors Tussling" 4 min 113 I asked a guitar website to recommend one skilful guitarist, capable of invention, spontaneity, who plays inspired, with an openness the something new. Great independent guitar release with invention, craftsmanship, spontaneity, fluidity,.. I also choose a moody track with additional cornet by Taylor Ho Bynum. * ReR Janet Feder : Speak Puppet (US-co,2000)***° Tr.2, "Shouting valley" 5 min Tr.6, "Sueno-remix" 4 min Tr.7, "Leaving Light" 3 min Tr.8, "Red Drum" 3 min 15 128 Fundamentally a combination of oddly prepared guitar inventions with fingerpicking guitar.-(It is as if a puppet wants to play along)-. The second track I choose was an odd remix, with additional drums, percussion and mixing. The other two remaining tracks are two more beauties of fingerpicking with odd aspects. * Cowhause Janet Feder & Colin Bricker : demo (USco,2003)***° Tr.1, "Loose slots" 3 min Tr.2, "Almost El Paso" 5 min 8 136 Even more odd, but fine modern mixes with fingerpicking. These are my two favourite parts. Sounds best with headphones. Outro's : * Tom Rec. Sack & Blumm (D,1999)*** Tr.10, "Enrico Carrousel" 3 min Tr.11, "Pim Pom Pom" 3 min 6 142 Not a guitarist, but it's about time I play Harald's music again, since I used to have obtained my fan webpage. The music fits well within the concept. Mixes of repetitive play of toy instruments and beyond. Completely foolish nonsense Ambient pop. Page about "Sack" : http://singersong.homestead.com/HaraldSACKZiegler.html * Private Peter Gustavsson : 3 track demo (SW,2003)**° Tr. 2, "Reflections" 4 min Acid Folk singer-songwriter. He became a close friend of Monte Nordstrom of "Ptarmigan". He will play guitar and sing on his forthcoming album that is kind of a new Ptarmigan effort. Monte has given me his legendary 12 string as a gift and I now he plays on that instrument in his current guitarduo "Kingfisher" (named after Gygafo´s album..) : "We play a kind of Folk-Progressive music: songs written by me.. often inspired by Pre Raphaelite paintings such as Autumn Leaves by Arthur Hughes. In 70´s, I played in a rather well known but unfortunately "albumless" group named "Gryning" (Dawn). This was one of the homerecordings to have an idea of what he's doing. I like this fine song, with a slightly broken-melody voice. Peter is also a painter. Have a look at his work at www.oneiricworld.nu Contact : Peter Gustavsson * private Kitchen Cynics : 2 song demo (UK,2003)****° ( CDR Tr.6, "The holy creel" 4 min) CDR Tr.7, "Snowflakes, oatcakes & earthquakes" I will play both songs if I have enough time left. When not only the second. I didn't find enough airplay time last time due to a live gig, but this time I will take another opportunity.
