Playlist “Psyche van het folk” Radio Centraal, Antwerpen (2005-8-24) : New flipped acid folk, interesting guitarists, more normal acidic folk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Part 1 : (“abnormality”) * Southern distr. Ginnungagap : Remeindre (UK,2005)**’ Tr.4, “Aurgelmir” 7 min (fragment) Tr.1, “Duel Ravens” 7 min 14 Limited, good and straight-simple slowly evolving droning album with tampura, guitar, harmonium etc. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview12.html#anchor_221 * 23 Productions The Lamb Called Light : Stream through your garden (US,2005)***° Tr.1, “Be our gracious host with us” 2 min Tr.2, “Lead thou me” 2 min Tr.3, “A Prayer a winded a prayer unwind” 2 min Tr.6,7: “Alleluia” 2+3 min Tr.10, “Amen Amen Amen” 2 min 14 -28 Charming improvised late-evening religious ritual nature-related celebrative feeling into music. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview12.html#anchor_225 * 23 Productions V.A. : The Davenport Family Boxset (1998-2005) (US,2005)*°° CD1,Tr.2, Train Unit : “Art Hat II” 2 min CD2,Tr.4, Nic Stage : “Oceans Away” 4 min CD3,Tr.2, Maths Balance Volumes : “Wanslammi Wonduri” 4 min CD3,Tr.6, Nico Kain : “The Way of God” 3 min 13 -41 First track is a by a charming improvised child recording with voice echo effects, toypiano and toyguitar. Second chosen track is a guitar improvisation with crazed outsider-hippieness singing, almost like a dog with regrets. Maths Balance track is hippieness-feel-importance trance in the garden. Nico Kain’s track is a bluesy acoustic guitar improvisation with echoed handshaked instruments. Well compiled psychedelic acidic acoustics, “exp.”folk, noise folk and often outsider folk community oddity-music and interesting nonsense-music. Steffen Basho-Junghans : Unknown Music 1 : Alien Letter, played on a 12-string guitar (D,2005)**°’’ Tr.6, “VIb (Kottke on Mars2)” 5 min (fragment) -46 Not the easiest Steffen Basho-Junghans release at all, for its excursions with an overload of odd harmonies. This is also getting to odd for me. Review listed at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Basho.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part 2 : guitarists (-bring us back to reality-) * American Sketch Rec. Nick Schillace : Box Canyon (US,2005)**** Tr.4, “Ruminations on Cambridge/McGill” 8 min Tr.5, “Rounding Home” 3 min Tr.8, “Red Poney” (John Fahey) 4 min 15 -61 From simple to complicated post Fahey excursions and one Fahey track. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar6.html#anchor_156 * Acoustic Music Axel Schultheiss : Departure (D,2002)****° Tr.3, “The Secret” 5 min Tr.5, “Strung Up” 5 min Tr.7, “The Sky Breaks open” 6 min 16 -77 Interesting skilled melodic guitar techniques and compositions and a very enjoyable release. Last two compositions are like a whole orchestra which is playing on one guitar. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar6.html#anchor_155 * Heartwood M. Clarelynn Rose : The Redwood Sidthe -solo acoustic guitar- (US,2003)***°/**** Tr.1, “The Redwood Sithe” 2 min Tr.4, “Bai Ma (White Horse)” 2 min 4 -81 Perfect to listen to “folk” flavoured guitar music with an original keep-it- simple clarity. The music has its portion of a John Renbourne influence. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar6.html#anchor_160 * Heartwood M. Clarelynn Rose : Meadow Run -solo guitar & Baroque lute (US,2004)****' Tr.1, «Guigui (the turtle and the salmon)» 4 min Tr.7, “White roots” 4 min Tr.8, “Phoenix” 3 min 11 -92 Similar album with a bit more complex compositions, with equal clarity. “White roots” is played on Baroque lute. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar6.html#anchor_160 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Ploughmyth Sedayne : Zither songs (UK,2005)***°° Supplement CD : Tr.1, “May Horn-Astray-Four Acre in the Day” 7 min -101 Tr.2, “King Orfeo” 9 min 16 -110 Review on the bottom of http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/sedayne.html * Harmonium Charlotte Greig : Quite Silent (UK,2005)**°° Tr.2, “Bury me here” 7 min Tr.3, “Go from my window” 3 min 10 -120 Good folk voice with two different sides on one album. One side is more dreamy, atmospheric, minor key etc. Wyrd folk, with extra instruments like harmonium, (beautiful), while the other side is more direct in style and ideas and is a bit different. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/folk.html#anchor_55 * preview copy Whysp : The Dawn is crowned (US,2005)***° Tr.1, “Dust on the Archetypes” 3 min Tr.2, “Julia’s Dream” (S.Barrett) 3 min 6 Tr.5, “Being to Being” 6 min 15 -135 Psychfolk with Forest/ISB/early Pink Floyd influence. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview13.html#anchor_218 * Instant Farma Circulus : Giantism (UK,1999)**°° Tr.3, “My Lady Carey’s Dompe” 3 min Tr.4, “Everglade” 5 min 8 -143 While waiting for the arrival of the new release, here something of the fine older release, with a few brilliant and essential psychfolk related tracks like these. Listed : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/Psychfolkpopreview.html#anchor_54 * Cynfeirdd Duparc : Twilight fell from high above (F,2005)*° Rather gothic neo-folk with its own typical musical limited simplicity. This is my favourite track. “Soul Catcher” might be my favourite track but there isn’t enough valuable airplay time. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview14.html#anchor_221 * private David Peachey : Thrasody (AUS,2005)*°° Tr.1, “Anaesthetic” 5 min -148 Tastefully arranged and nicely sounding song with sad and strong transforming content.
