Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen. Modstly wintry songs & moods from new psych folk, neo-folk & acid folk releases, part 1. 2003-11-24. * Dark Holler V.A.: Hand/Eye -past,present-future- (var.2003)***° US CD1, Tr.2, In Gowan Ring : : "On the butterfly's wing" 5 min S Tr.3, Peter Scion : "Cynthia" 5 min US Tr.4, Sarada : "The Darket path" 5 min US Tr.6, The Iditarod : "The Rowan" 6 min US Tr.7, Stonebreath : "The Blood of the woven-vine divinity" 4 min US Tr.9, Currituck County : "Paid for grace" 3 min US Tr.13, Prydwyn : "Hermit Song (Ianitrix)" 4 min D Tr.14, Fit & Limo : "Oh Sphinx" 6 min 40 A fine overview of the new psych folk scene, in first CD the clear song orientated groups mostly, often in a C.O.B./Midwinter style, and in the second CD the mood creators mostly. Amps for Christ was one of the groups listed. I preferred to give attention to their complete works in a separate show after this, in part 2. Greg Weeks, also listed, will as well get attention again in part 2, a later show. M.J.Harris & Martyn Bates release "Murder Ballads" gets airplay at the end of this show. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview2.html * Secret Eye Black Forest / Black Sea (US,2003)**° Tr.1, "Sevastopol" 4 min Tr.3, "Middle Song" 4 min 8 48 Moody instrumentals and songs (guitar, cello, voice) Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview2.html * Secret Eye V.A.: For The Dead In Space, vol II & III (var.2003)**°' CD1, Tr.10, Prydwyn : "Prayers of Action" 2 min CD2, Tr. 9, Green Crown : "Raindrops" 3 min Gothic/Neo-folk Tr.10, Dead Raven Choir : "Song about a Rose" 4 min Tr.11, Stone Breath : "Ring Ting" (fragment->230) 3 min Tr.12, Cauldron : "Man in the Tree" 9 min Tr.13, Mutter : "Forbidden City" 5 min Tr.14, Pearls Before Swine : "Translucent Carriages" 4 min 31 80 My favourite tracks of this tribute to Pearls Before Swine/Tom Rapp double CD. More tracks have an 80's flavour of textured sounds, more than a psych folk flavour like PBS had. It's a somewhat consistent release. Only for my kind of taste it was somewhat disappointing compared to vol 1, except for some tracks, like those which I choose for airplay. These I think were perfect AND with the right amount of reflection to the original inspiration. It's already worth tracing the release for these tracks. They are most of the second half of CD2. Marissa Nadler was also on this release with a good interpretation, but I preferred to give airplay to her demo work. She is played at the end of this show. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview4.html * Wild Places Cauldron : the Sanctuary Suite (S,1998)**** Very good soundtrack like mostly acoustic prog release. It is also difficult to take out a part for everything hangs so much together. It'll get more attention when I will have radioshows about Sweden. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview4.html * Wild Places Holy River Band : Earthquake Country (S,2000)*** Tr.1, "Travellers" 8 min Tr.12, "Suffering/Robert" 12 min 20 100 A release that fits better into the concept of this radioshow. More song oriented as usual for this group. Off-shout of Spacious Mind. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/psychfolkpopreview2.html * Camera Obscura Rec. Salamander : Birds of Appetite (US,1999)***° Tr.5, "Sadhu" 11 min Tr.6, "Yomin pt.2, 2 min 1" 113 Consistent improvisational, very spacy nightpsychedelica & raga-folkpsych. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview4.html * Camera Obscura Rec. Stone Breath : The Silver Skein Unwound (US,2003)***° Tr.1, "Wasp-Sting, Thorn, and Arrowhead" 3 min Tr.4, "Last lost love song" 3 min Tr.5, "Secrets Bound in Skin" 4 min 10 123 Very nice "more minimal COB-like" acid folk. I also read the text about the two towers. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview4.html * Sept.Gurls Rec. Breathe Stone (US,2003)***° Tr.2, "Candle, corpse and bell" 7 min 130 Offshoot more experimental side of Stone Breath. Nice textured music, like an basically still acoustic soundscape with songs. I like this kind of experimenting, like on this track even more. Second part reminds me at an early Atman track. This is Timothy's project mostly (with the help of Sarada on one track), with R.A.Cambell. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview4.html * Invisible Rec. M.J.Harris & Martyn Bates : Murder Ballads (the complete collection) (US,1994-1996)***** CD2, Passages : Tr.2 "The Cruel Mother" 11 min Unique project of voice + background textures, very quiet, relaxed, with a dark tension, folk flavoured but into an almost other-worldly mood and atmosphere of desperate loneliness. Never heard anything like this. Minimal, but extremely powerful. Highly recommended. Info : http://www.eyelessingaza.com/mbdisc.html * Private Marissa Nadler : demo (US,2003)***** Tr.2, "Hyacinth" 3 min Tr.9, "As I lay in death" 5 min 150 Very beautiful songs & voice. In the vein of Shelagh McDonald, Miriam Backhouse, Mary Hopkin, Exrradition, etc.. Highly recommended ! An official release is being recorded and will be released soon ! Purple Void : Within the Nebula of Time (NL,2003)** Tr.1, "The King is mad" 3 min 97 More psych guitars with band, with some other influences. Not always good recorded, but promising if guitarist one day would record in better conditions with other talented musicians. * Fissure Rec.
