Playlist "Psyche van het Folk" New releases part 3 : (mostly psych and R.I.O. with some avant touches) * Carbon 7 Attica: You are in Danger (B,2004)**°' (vg->ex) Tr.3, "Urban fields" 8 min Tr.6, "Riverman" (N.Drake) 5 min 13 This is a post-rock singer-songwriter release, with jazzy influences and smoothness, with an underlying breathing-like rhythm, without ever loosing the rock drive. I like the band experimenting a bit, like in "Urban Fields". I also preferred to airplay the experimental and jazzy version of the now famous Nick Drake's song. 2 excellent tracks that show the band's talent best. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/Belgium.html * Big Balloon M. The Red Masque: Feathers for Flesh (US,2004)**°° (vg->ex) Tr.2, "Passage" 15 min -28 The group started experimental and acoustic. With this 3rd release they evolved to a more avant-gothic progressive rock theatre-like performance group. I am very sure it will be well received by progressive rock lovers. An excellent track ! Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/prog8.html * Radikal Duke DAAU: Tub Gurnard Goodness (B,2004)***' (vg->perh.ex.) Tr.1,"My goodness! poetry" 8 min Tr.6,"of r*d*h*d (2+2=5)" (Radiohead) 4 min Tr.8,"Catfish Blues" 2 min Tr.12, "Two fast dreams" 6 min 20-48 Glad to see this Antwerp group returned to their roots of urban chamber music with a rock-like attitude. The compositions matured a bit compared to the first -still very good ! but more impulsive- album. This is another one that surely will also appeal to R.I.O. fans. "2+2=5" is a chamber music version of the Radiohead track. "Catfish Blues" is pretty catchy, a bit klezmer-like. Last track I choose too because it was a good closer. It has stirring minimalist repetitive bass, with the clarinet and accordion here and there driving up the track, with the transposing violin, connecting the mix melodically together together. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/Belgium2.html * Galapagos4 The Butchershop Quartet: The Rite of Spring (US,2001,2004)*** (vg) CD1, part one : "The Adoration of the Earth" (8 real parts) Tr.1-3,4 : ->134 (max.200) 10 min Tr.11-13 : 7 min 17 -65 CD2, part two : "The Sacrifice" part 6 : Tr.14, "Sacrificial Dance (the chosen one)" fragm.->4.. 5 min -70 I airplayed another version of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" in my radioshow before. This is a more contemporary rock version, well done. First part is a very good two-electric-guitars-dialogue, very Fripp-ian. Then drums and bass comes in. I choose two favourite fragments that give an idea. Second CD contains DJ mixes, also with hiphop, which I don't like. The last mix "Rite of Spring" is amongst my favourite Strawinski tracks, with "Firebird", and perhaps "The Flood". "chosen one" I think is best for presentation and is really ok this way. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/prog8.html * Secret Eye Urdog: Gardens of Bones (US,2004)***° (ex) Tr.1, "A smokey Narghile" 1 min Tr.2, "Ice on Water" 10 min Tr.4, "Garden Of Bones" 5 min 16 Fantastic Liverpool psychedelica, as a combination of all kinds of psychedelica, including space psych,.. Often very trippy but at the same time with lots of details and a variety of movements. Excellent !! Info : parmaleedog@yahoo.com Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/prog5.html * Swordfish Ya Ho Wha 13: The Operetta (US,1975)? Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/YAHOWA.html Will not be air-played this radioshow, but I prefer already to mention the new LP reissue. ISRAELI PROG part 3 : This part is also published on line at http://progressive.homestead.com/ISRAELIPROG.html * Acum Habrera Hativeet : Out of broken vessels (IS,1985)****' Tr.3, "Or haganuz" (the hidden light) - Kabala related lyrics- 13 min Tr.6, "Shir Hama'alot (song of the stairs) -meaning spiritual stairs to heaven, another Kabala related track- 7 min Tr.1, "At Adama" (you, the earth) 4 min 24 -100 Nice Middle Eastern styled song music with strong instrumentation, almost progressive/ "psych" in its core. Or at least it can stand easily next to progressive / psychedelic material. First track is arranged very Western, but still it is Middle Eastern. Very convincing. Singer was born in Morocco. Another member is from Iran. Khamkar comes from India. The guitarist/banjo player who comes from the USA. It is in fact an Israeli group who play mostly more Persian/Arab styled music. Highly recommended album ! Bar, born in Rabat, Morocco, composes most of the group's songs. He plays drums and flute and also arranges much of the music. Thank you G.K. for this one ! This was their 4th album. I would have preferred to play track 5, or 2 as well but there wasn't enough airplay time. "When they started playing together 26 years ago, their music was seen as the music of the enemy. That was because Habrera Hativit refused to imitate Western pop, but instead played a fusion of Eastern music; sephardic sounds from Morocco, and from North Africa. While once their music was shunned, now it is celebrated. It is the music of the land, the music of the people." It was the first Israeli group to merge such influences and they were definitely groundbreaking when they first appeared. At some tracks the crossover elements are clearer. The chosen track is a very strong performance of a crossover, like Middle Eastern rock. Last track is with second female voice. Very nice album! This was their third album. G.K. : "The second song dates back to the 30's it was composed by Yedidia Admon who was a pioneering composer mixing elements of western and Middle Eastern themes into his compositions. This is a classic Israeli song." Latter line-up : Bar, born in Rabat, drums and flute and also arranges much of the music The rest of the band is: Manashe Sasson, on Santur; Nitsan-Ken Razel, violin; Samson Khamkar on violin, the sitar and the flute; Ilan Ben-Ami, guitar; Yael Offenbach, Tabla; and Yaacob Segal, piano, ud, and bass. PS. : Both LP's were released on one reissue. The Platina: The girl with the flaxen hair (IS,rec.1973,1976)***°° Tr.1, "Picture" 5 min Tr.2, "The girl with the flaxen hair" 13 min (shortened) 3rd album by this group. Except for 20 minute of material the mastertapes got lost due to the political chaos in the early 70's. With the replacement of some live recording of 13 minutes and a last recorded session in 1976 this is the best preserved collection we can get of this somewhat Canterbury or jazzy styled progrock group. The title track refers to a Debussy composition. Fantastic session! And a very good track! Hearing this session and knowing the rest of the double LP session is forever lost we can only say how much a shame this is. Otherwise I guess it surely would have been ranked amongst the best Canterbury records. The 1976 session is much more pure jazz. Gil Keltch : "their arrangements for debussy were definitely their proggiest moments, they were Israel's first jazz-rock band starting out in 1969" Soundfile from early session : http://www.miorecords.com/Releases/Platina/1.mp3 Soundfragments at http://www.israel-music.com/?product=2429 (first 2 I airplay) Info and more fragments : http://www.miorecords.com/Releases/Platina/platina.html Article : http://www.klezmershack.com/archives/000813.html German review : http://www.babyblaue-seiten.de/index.php?content=review&albumId=3633 * Phonokol Poopik (IS,1969)**°° Tr.8, "No troubles any more" 5 min Tr.9, "Just" 3 min Tr.12, "I had a Night" 5 min 13 -143 Fine song orientated rock and softrock. Very 70's like, and with very good voice. These are really great, favourite tracks. The album sounds pretty modern for 1969. Very rare album, only 400 made. The Churchill's wrote-composed-played-produced half of it, singer Shlomo Gronich, made 3 tracks, and Shalom Hanoch made the only big hit on it. The Chuchill's later took two tracks from the album ("Too Much To Love To Know", a 7 inch by Churchill's), translated the lyrics to English and recorded them under Jericho Jones (I had a night" is a JJ track, and also "Time is now", was released on 7 inch by Jericho Jones). Also Gronich took one of these tracks and used it at another album in 1973. G.K. : "No troubles anymore and had a night are both early Gronich compositions, his first tunes to be recorded ever, both Gronich and the churchill's play on this album and contributed compositions, some of the tracks are kind ode an Israeli reply to Sgt Pepper." "Among The Stars" a hit from Poopik was written by Rotblit from Shalom Hanoch. This album with sound-fragments : http://www.israel-music.com/?product=2910 * Phonokol Jonathan Geffen & The Good Band : Small talk (IS,1990)**** Tr.1, "Picture" 3 min Tr.2, "Hebrew Book week" 3 min (shortened) Very 70's like. Softrock song orientated album with large portion of attention to the general musical qualities. Very good album. G.K. : "Jonathan Geffen is very well known and respected poet and satirist in Israel, he is also the father of Aviv Geffen of Steve Wilson's blackfield, starting in the mid seventies Geffen started putting out shows mixing cabaret and satire with rock music and has collaborated with many important Israeli rocksters. This album (with sound-fragments) : http://www.israel-music.com/?product=263 About Jonathan Geffen : http://jonathan_geffen.tripod.com/english.html * NMC Music Matti Caspi (IS,1974)*°(?) Singer-songwriter item with cabaret but also softrock elements. I couldn't grab it so easily after a quick listen. This album (with sound-fragments) : http://www.israel-music.com/?product=853 & http://members.tripod.com/LeenaT/Matti_Caspi/mc-1974.htm Caspi website : http://www.matticaspi.co.il & http://members.tripod.com/LeenaT/Matti_Caspi/ etc.. * Mio Rec. Shmuel Kraus : A criminal record (IS,1971)**(?) Sound like a kind of rebel-rock(and rock'n roll). I think partly driven by what has been sung, something g foreigners will miss when not understanding the words. I will need to take more time for this one. G.K.: "It was recorded during a holiday from prison, it was done very fast and has lot of emotion and reggae concealed in it."
