Playlist “Psyche van het Folk”, Radio Centraal, Antwerpen. Indian rock & Middle Eastern Rock/Prog/psych. 1. INDIA * Normal Rec. Simla Beat 70 / 71 (IND,1971,1972)**°° CD1, 1970 : Tr.3, X'Lents: “Psychedelia” 4 min Great surf-rocking track ! Tr.8, Great Bear: “Mist” (part 1 ->248: + fragment part 2 -> 4..) 5 Min Great moody psychedelic track (first part)/ good garage psych with bluesy improvisation (second part) and psych organ. CD2, 1972 : Tr.11, Hipnotic Eye: “Aimless Lady” 8 min 17 With great psych organ & garage psych guitars. The only psychedelica I heard from India, but these tracks are really great psych !! Simla Beat was a beat/psych/garage contest held by a cigarette company. Covers and links at the end of http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/SITARBEAT.html 2. MOROCCO/CANADA ? * Durium Variations : Moroccan roll (CAN,1974)*°° Tr.4, “Kasbah-Tadla” 4 min Tr.5, “Growing Stronger” 3 min Tr.8, “Sanglots (Tears)” (?) 3 min 10 Glamour hardrock record wuth middle eastern influence. Esoecially two tracks have Moroccan themes and are the best tracks of the record, as nice middle eastern rock. Cover and review at http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast.html PS. Of course Jimmy Page & Robert Plant made one album with Moroccan musician too which is worked out well in two tracks. I saw other improvisations like this succeed as well. If anyone knows more examples like this please mail me. 3. ALGERIA * Demand Djamel Ailam : les rêves du vent (ALG/F,1978 ?) **° Tr.8, «Samarkande» 7 min 35 I don’t like so much this (North African popular style of) Arabian singing. Last track is an instrumental, mostly traditional, but with electric bass and drums added, which makes the original sound stronger, or let’s say more progressive. This is a strong instrumental. Info & small review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast.html * Absolute Rec. Rimitti “Cheikha” featuring Fripp and Flea : unreleased tracks from the Sidi Mansour album” (ALG/US,1995)**°° “Rah Yabkhi” (street mix) is one song in David Byrne/Brian Eno ethno mix style, an exploited version with this grandmother of RAI. This track is somewhat successful. In the other tracks you can hear the music is exploited. At the end I decided not to airplay the track. Info and small review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast.html * Kondo-Râ DjurDjura : “A yemma” (ALG/F,1990)***°’ A very good Berber release. Djur Djura is a singer who lives in France now. Beautiful child choirs etc. with traditional and some new elements. 3. LEBANON * A.Chanine & Fils Omar Korshid and his magic guitar : Belly Dance from Lebanon (LEB,197?)*** I like Omar’s electric guitar very much when it’s combined with moog, like in this track “Karoun Karoyn” (with wawa like effects). It includes Middle Eastern bellydance percussion. Because of time limitations I left it out. The next items are more essential (as crossover style). * A.Chanine & Fils Omar Khorshid and his magic guitar : Belly Dance vol 1 (LEB,197?)***°’ Tr.8, “Apache” 5 min Tr.9, “Johnny Guitar” 5 min Tr.12,“Warakat Ya Nassib” 5 min 15 -50 These tracks are the best crossovers of the album. First track is surf like. Omar’s best album I know still is “Rhythms from the orient” (LEN,1974)***** * A.Chanine & Fils Omar Khorshid and his magic guitar : Belly Dance vol 2 (LEB,197?)***° Tr.6, “Pop Corn” 5 min -55 Best album remains “Rhythms from the orient” (1974)*****. I air-played lots of tracks from it before. Small review of Omar’s items : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast.html 4. TURKEY * Kervan Orhan Gencebay : Leyla Ile Mecnun (TÜ,1983)****° Tr.1, “Al Senin Olsun” 6 min Tr.6, “Leyla ile Mecnun” 8 min 14 -69 One of the first Arabesque singers, now very popular. The beautiful middle eastern electric guitar playing here, with some moog here and there could remind some of Omar Khorshid. Of course the style due to Arabesque orchestrations and singing is very different. I like this album very much. Info : http://progressive.homestead.com/ORHAN_GENCEBAY.html * H.A.T. Metin H. Alatli : Alamooga Esinlenmeler –Sentetir Oyun Havalari” (= “synthetic dance moods”) (197?)**°°° CDR Tr.2, 2 min Tr.3, 14 min Tr.4, 440 min 21 -90 First site has various inventive, very good, nice or easy listening crossover- rock with Middle Eastern elements, rock and electronic instruments (and sitar). Last tracks are more in kitschy classical music interpretations, more comparable in style to Walter Carlos. These more kitschy tracks are sometimes a bit silly. Info : http://progressive.homestead.com/Siluetler.html * Private VA. Go Larda “Turkish Beat” (1965-1969)*°° Tr.27, Beybonlar : “Neruni” 4 min * Private Cigrisim & Bunalimlar (TÜ,196’)***°° Tr.8, “Bunalim” 4 min Tr.11,“Bir Dünya Da Bana Ver” 4 min 12 -102 Very original sound of these groups, often harder as usual. Varying from garagerock/punk until psychedelica. Track 8 is a great psychrock instrumental. Info : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/cigrisim.html & http://progressive.homestead.com/GRUP_BUNALIM.html * World Psychedelia Bülent : BenimleOynar Misin (TÜ,1974)***° Tr.2, “Kediler” 3 min Tr.6, “Suna Abla” 2 min Tr.9, ”Yagmur” 3 min Tr.12,“Sik Latife” 3 min 11 -113 Beautiful, sometimes very romantic psych folk item. Reissued in Korea lately. Recommended. Bülent later also participated with Fikret Kizilok, another folksinger who started with (Anadolu) beat music before. info : http://progressive.homestead.com/bulent.html * Ada Müzik Siddharta : Siddharta (1993-1998)***° Tr.1, “A Trip to innerself” 11 min -124 Very good guitar psych & good psychrock songs in English. With long tracks, mainly instrumental. Perhaps it still is the most progressive official Turkish release from around this date. Influenced by Pink Floyd mainly, but still it is more psychrock in style. Especially the first track is great psychedelica !! After a few listens I appreciated the complete album even more. Good stuff ! Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview2.html * -Murat Ses (former Mogollar keyboardplayer) newest item should have been included- It will be next time. 5. US * Web of Mimicry Secret Chiefs 3 : Book of Horizons (US,2004)****° Tr.1, “Ishraqiyun : the 4 (The Great Ishraqi Sun)” 5 min Tr.9, “The Electromagnetic Azoth: On the Wings of the Haoma” 5 min Tr.14,“The Holy Vehm: Hypostasis of the Archons” 6 min Tr.8, “Traditionalists: Electrotheonic Grail Dove” 4 min Tr.13,“The Holy Vehm: Exterminating Angel” 6 min 26 Fantastic group which uses mostly the more complex and rich traditions from anywhere in the world. One of the so many fundaments digs into the rich musical complexity of Middle Eastern music. PS. The titles order given on PC display seems to be different from the booklet. First track here is Middle Eastern. Second chosen track is powerful & complex Dark Metal. Track 13 is a let’s say “bombastic easy listening” track. Track 8 is a filmic Morricone-like track (with orchestrations and bigger band). Last track has more modern rhythms combined with surf-like and other elements. Brilliant! Highly recommended stuff!! Favourite group from the last 5 years. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Only if time left: * Web of Mimicry Secret Chiefs 3 : Book M (US,2001)***** part 1 : “Hearing fire” : Tr.1, “Knights of Damcar” 3 min Tr.2, “Damcar” 5 min Tr.5, “Horseman of the Invisible” 3 min Tr.6, “Combat of the Angle” 4 min Tr.7, “Zulfiqar III” …for rest of time Here some complex modern rhythms are used, mixed with middle eastern complexity.
