FUSIONS/CROSSOVERS WITH TIBET/INDIA/MIDDLE EAST * StillwaterSound Tsering Wangmo : Forbidden Voice (TIB,2002)***° Tr.2, "Tsering Tsomo" 7 min audio : http://www.songpeddler.com/TseringWangmo/TseringTsomo_TWangmo.asp Tr.4, "Menchung Bhumo" 3 min audio : http://www.songpeddler.com/TseringWangmo/MenchungBhumo_TWangmo.asp Tr.8, "Amey Yangchen" 4 min audio : http://www.songpeddler.com/TseringWangmo/AmeyYangchen_TWangmo.asp Tr.11,"Nangpa" 4 min -18 audio : http://www.songpeddler.com/TseringWangmo/Nangpa_TWangmo.asp “Tsering Wangmo” is a wonderful track by producer Colin Farish. It is a very good combination of western styles with some Tibetan folk touch. Second track is a rearranged Tibetan traditional with easy piano. “Amey Yangchen” is a song on lyricas by Tsering, arranged by Colin with acoustic guitar and other instruments, like with another instrument which drones a bit (like a sitar). These tracks I found the most successful and perfect in their fusing style. It’s done with respect for the music, an not motivated by just an exploitation mentality. Review on http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html * Artefacts Nada (B,2002)***°' Tr.5, "Dhagenadha" (L.De Gezelle) 4 min audio : http://home.scarlet.be/~bc909181/dhagenada.mp3 Tr.6, "Stage Ascension" (trad./T.Theuns/lyrics : G.Benali) 5 min Tr.9, "Wisser" 10 min -19 -55 Wonderful combination of sitar/Indian with North African Middle Eastern and other elements. With Bert Cornelis (sitar), Tom Theuns (guitar, harmonium), Pierre Narcisse (tabla, percussion), Luc De Gezelle (violin), Ghalia Benali (from Tunisia as the North African Arab voice). Last track is a very successful, unique track, a partly free form expression with some humour and very open play with musicality; I wished there was recorded even more like this, with similar success. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/INDIAWORLD.html A recommended release. * Azul Music Marsicano : Electric Sitar –electronic grooves by Edison X- (BRAZ,2003)**°’ Tr.4, “Ibiza” 6 min Tr.8, “Alhambra” 7 min -13 -68 Mostly with extremely heavy club-beat mixes, but with still good ideas in compositions and arrangements that make the more (dance) club-like approach still work fine, pure musically spoken. I found “Ibiza” the most successful combination. “Alhambra” has a very nice contribution of some solo Spanish Fusion guitar too (and some mixed in voice), another great idea and combination. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIABEATS.html * Private Marsicano & The electric Sitar Experience : Rock Mantrico Psico Délico (BRAZ,2003)***°’ Tr.1, “Iron Man” (Black Sabbath) 5 min Tr.2, “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” (Iron Butterfly) 4 min Tr.3, “Set the controls from the heart of the sun” (Pink Floyd) 4 min -13 81 Hearing these psychedelic sitar-rock versions of these psych classics, with some minimal raga-like improvisation on the musical themes, is a big WOW for me!! It sounds like something I always wanted and expected to hear with sitar-psych- rock, but actually never heard much before. It is not with too complex arrangements of the group, but just perfectly played how it sounds best, in a psychedelic rock mode. “Third Stone of the Sun” (Jimmy Hendrix) has an African instrument to it. I didn’t play that one for it is more repetitive than the other examples I did airplay. These are my favourite tracks. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/SITARREVIEW.html * Ikef Brother Ah & The Sound of Awareness Ensemble: Key to nowhere (US,1983)****° Tr.1, "Motherless child" 9 min audio : http://www.ikefrecords.com/audio/motherless%20child.mp3 Tr.4, "The Key to nowhere" 5 min 14 -95 audio : http://www.ikefrecords.com/audio/key%20to%20nowhere.mp3 This is a wonderful black spiritual jazz item with lots of world instruments. A shame I can’t airplay more of this classic item. These two tracks are gospel- like soulful emotionally strong tracks with female vocals, harp, bass, flute (and on second track also electric guitar, percussion). All three Brother Ah’s reissues are highly recommended, but “Move ever onward” still is other favourite. This one is the most harmony-seeking one. The other one is more free- jazz, or experimental World-Music fusing jazz. For fans of early Don Cherry, Alice Coltrane,... Brother Ah was a pupil of Sun Ra. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/SITARFUSION.html * Internet demo Som'Ma : parts of live recordings (IR,2003)- Tr.3,"Persian Garden IV" (Live at the Noe Valley Ministrymin) 3 audio : http://www.sommamusic.com/music/Persian-Garden-IV.mp3 Tr. “Persian Garden IV” 5 min Audio : http://www.sommamusic.com/music/Persian-Garden-IV.mp3 This Persian group fuses Western elements into their music. I choose 2 nice tracks for airplay which showed this influence. We hear Middle Eastern singing with piano and other instruments like clarinet (?), double bass (?),... The group still is working on their first CD-release. Info : http://progressive.homestead.com/Persiareview.html * remark : Also Murat Ses (Turkey) is working on a new release. More about it as soon as it's finished. (Info : http://www.muratses.com) * EFA/Schneeball Embryo : Turn Peace (D,1989)**°°' cover : http://utenti.lycos.it/marbleindex/Immagini/Embryo2.jpg & http://www.indigo.de/unser_programm/cover/3045/ Tr.1, "Marque's Song" 8 min Tr.2, "Velly Velly Good" 10 min 18 -116 Fantastic talented group, -they still are-. This record was made to celebrate their 20 years of existence/history. Therefore other incredible musicians were invited, including Mal Waldron, the Karnataka College of Percussion, etc. My favourite tracks are the first two Middle Eastern ones. Both are with P.Pilai, on tavil, R.Schaeffer on nagasuram, M.Löwental on piano ; on the first track Roman Bunka plays oud. This combines perfectly with piano. This release was published on CD as well. Very good arrangements, nice songs and instrumentals. Very recommended ! Fits well with 21.Peron’s approach in music. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html * Acum Habrera Hativeet (=the Gathering) : Out of Broken Vessels (IS,1985)***°' Tr.2, "tracktitle ?" 6 min First track combines blues-rock with Middle Eastern touch and in a Middle Eastern way. Perhaps this is the only Israeli group -lead by a Moroccan singer, and with a Persian, an Indian and Israeli members- playing Arab crossover rock and Middle Eastern crossover music in Hebrew language. A couple weeks ago, I air-played before a few other tracks from this release. Info (see radioshow 3) : http://progressive.homestead.com/ISRAELIPROG.html * Acum Habrera Hativeet : Woven Tread (IS,1981)***°' -(Tr.5 if the following item doesn't arrive in time- 5 min) Tr.6, "tracktitle ?" 5 min The reissue of both albums in one is a highly recommended reissue if you like Middle Eastern music. On last chosen track you hear also tampura and tabla, as one of the Indian elements. Info (see radioshow 3) : http://progressive.homestead.com/ISRAELIPROG.html * private Zimar : demo ("PAL",2004)-? -reserved for last minute addition but never received the demo release This Palestinian Fusion ? group listed as "CONTEMPORARY PALESTINIAN QUINTET" will have a concert in Belgium : Nov 27th in VK in Brussels. If I don't get this item in time I will airplay one more track of Habrera Hativeet like mentioned.
