Playlist “Psyche van het Folk”, Radio Centraal, Antwerpen (Mostly) new Latin American progressive music : ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- JOSE LUIS FERNANDEZ LEDESMA Q. (Mexico) : * Musea Rec. José Luis Fernandez Ledesma Q. : Motivos para perderse (MEX,rec.1994-1995)*° More keyboard orientated release of this Nirgal Valis keyboard player. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/MEXICO.html * Luna Negra José Luis Fernandez Ledesma Q : Al Filo (MEX,2001)*** Tr.6, «Ojo de Vebado» 6 min 6 This sounds like a conceptual ? album around the death of a child going to the other side. With many quite passages. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/MEXICO.html * Smogless Rec. José Luis Fernandez Ledesma Q : Dicen que Somos Dioses y nos Sonamos Hombres (MEX,rec.1993, re.2000)****° Tr.10, «Danza Inerte» 7 min 13 Masterpiece of arranged symphonic and a little bit neo-symphonic music, with lots of (acoustic) instruments & some keyboards, with good varied sound and beautiful female vocals. Still amongst my favourite Latin American releases. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/MEXICO.html * Luna Negra José Luis Fernandez Ledesma Q : Designos (MEX,2003)**°° Tr.1, «Ave Luz» (fragment)->332 4 min -17 Latest album, is again somewhat similar as “Dicen..”. Still it is more keyboard related as it, and more symphonic. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/MEXICO.html AMAROK (Spain): * Luna Negra Amarok : Quentadharkën (SP,2004)***° Tr.8, «Quentadharkën part 2 : “Los Hechos” 4 min Tr.9, «Quentadharkën part 3 : « La Batalla»->035 1 min Bonus track : Tr.13, «Bocin de l’Emporda» 4 min 9 -25 Amarok now evolved to much more multilayered ‘symphonic rock’ style of their earlier unique ethno-artfolk symphonic style. The bonus track shows the earlier group with their freshly arranged symphonic art style in 1989. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/spain.html AKINETÓN RETARD (Chile): * Mylodon Rec. Akinetón Retard : 21 Canapés (CHI,2003)**** Tr.1, «Akinefrón» 4 min Tr.6, «Farmacologias» 3 min Tr.8, «La Farsa Platinum» 1 min Tr.9, «Potenzia» 2 min Tr.15,«Mosaico’s» 3 min Tr.21,«El Influenciódromo» 1 min 15 -40 Tr.20,«Transparencias de lagos desiertos» (fragm.) 1 min Varied, sophisticated and original sound of this chamber rock band. With sometimes tiny musical ideas hanging well together. The group came to Europe lately. Recommended. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/CHILI_GROUPS.html * Lizard/Myl.Rec. Akinetón Retard (CHI,2001)**°° Tr.3, “Viaje a Erlebnis” 4 min Tr.7, «Aquellare Satiri Sarnaz» 9 min 13 –53 A combination of R.I.O. with heavy progrock and other styles, basically this is an urban heavy chamber rock band with saxes etc. The first track is a bit Zeuhl style with some vocal harmonies, and additional saxes too. The second chosen track is heavy chamber rock with an interesting improvisational composition. The group evolved nicely to a more sophisticated sound, if you compare this old album’s other tracks to the “21 Canapés” album. Never the less these 2 tracks are still brilliant. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/CHILI_GROUPS.html CONTRALUZ (Argentine) : * Mardel-X Contraluz : Americanos (ARG,1973)***°° Tr.2, “Sin Trabajo” 7 min Tr.8, «Seamos» 4 min 11 -64 Contraluz was a heavy rock band with much Jethro Tull influence, especially in flute playing. Good album, with powerful, and like very often in Argentine prog from 70’s emotionally rich singing. Second track has some jazz improvisation in it. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/ARG_reviews.html * Private Contraluz : Ramos Generales (ARG,2003)***° Tr.1, «Surge» 9 min Tr.4, «Llevo…a mi» 12 min 21 -85 Nowadays the band still exist. Nowadays they make really nice sophisticated symphonic pop with very varied arrangements (deriving from folk, tango, jazz, and symphonic rock inspirations). Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/ARG_reviews.html MATRAZ (Chile) : * Private Matraz : Tiempo (CHI,2001)***°° Tr.1, «Amanecer-Crepusculo-Amanecer» 11 min -96 New style of progressive rock with some metal bass incomparable to the much more stupid subgenre of sympho-metal. This is real original progressive music, which surprised me a lot at first hearing. It is much more in the style of 70’s Italian symphonic progressive. With beautiful singing and piano, keyboards and metal bass, drums.. Pretty unique, and recommended. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/CHILI_GROUPS.html * Musea Rec. Matraz : Gritaré (2004)**°° Tr.7, «Sobreviviente» 19 min -115 Latest release by this group, with a somewhat evolved sound, much more into the also going deeper into the newer sympho genres (-even sympho-metal-). This great track comes with a female singer with great Latin voice, who you can also hear in the last track. This track sounds for instance is a great fusion of symphonic with some progressive rock & metal, from a real “progressive” and musical point of view. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/CHILI_GROUPS.html SARAX (Chile) : * Cantera Pr. Sarax : Ejución (CHI,2000)***°° Tr.6, «Extenciones» 5 min -120 Soundfile : http://www63.pair.com/membrana/saraxmedia/extenciones.mp3 Heavy prog rock concept. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/CHILI_GROUPS.html * Mylodon Rec. Sarax : 570.Kythera (CHI,2004)**° Progrock-opera, not as heavy as the earlier “Ejución” album. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/CHILI_GROUPS.html Outro : GAL COSTA (Brazil) : * Philips Gal Costa : Gal Costa (BRAZ,1969)****° Tr.2, “Touareg” 4 min Soundfile : http://www.vh1.com/shared/droplets/util/track_sample.asx?trackId=4832077 Tr.7, “The Empty Boat” 5 min Soundfile : http://www.vh1.com/shared/droplets/util/track_sample.asx?trackId=4832082 Tr.8, “Objeto Sim, Objeto Não” 5 min Soundfile : http://www.vh1.com/shared/droplets/util/track_sample.asx?trackId=4832083 Tr.9, “Pulsars E Quasars” 6 min 20 -140 Soundfile : http://www.vh1.com/shared/droplets/util/track_sample.asx?trackId=4832084 In the early period Gal Costa worked together with the best prog and psych musicians resulting on a couple of great psych albums. This first track is with an “Arab” theme. Second is the craziest psychblues or something. Then we also hear lots of crazy psych background and voices and reverb effects, like on “Objeto Sim, Objeto Não”, and a bit more at the last track. This is more normal music as a matter of speaking but really very nice. This track is actually a Paraguayan folk-song. Not a fantastic album, but good. It has very good musicians participating : David Lebón on bass and acoustic guitar, Oscar Moro on drums, Litto Nebbia on piano, Emilio del Güercio on flute and backing vocals, Jorge Cutello on flute, León Gieco on harp and vocals, Miguel y Eugenio on vocals, and Edelmiro Molinari on guitar and production. Mixing : Billy Bond. A psych crossover combination of rock, blues and jazz and psych rock.
