Playlist “Psyche van het Folk”, Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, 2005-05-4 : (mostly Scandinavian) JAZZFUSIONS & FUTURISTIC ELECTRONICS. * Ozella Music Shunsuke Mizuno : Slow Time (JAP,comp.2004)**** Tr.1, “Rain in the distance” 6 min Audio : http://www.iris.dti.ne.jp/~mizunos/rain.aiff Tr.8, “Beyond the blue” 5 min Tr.11, “Beech Forest” 8 min (shortened to 6 min) Beautiful new Japanese music with some Jazz Fusion ability composed by this double bass player. This first and the second chosen track has some Celtic-Irish flavour in the brilliant 22-string koto playing by Miwa Inaba. Last track is lead by piano and hitiriki. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/FUSION.html * Rune Gramm. In The Country : This was the pace of my heartbeat (NO,2005)*°° Tr.11, “Laschia ch’io pianga” 3 min -22 Mostly very inimal and sad jazz piano with some percussion,.. My favourite track is this one inspired by Händel, stripped to a sad minimal jazz piece with much contrapunt. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Norway.html * NorCD Karl Seglem : Femstein (N,2004)**** Tr.1, “Bla Botn” 5 min Audio : http://www.cuberoots.com/sound/22/7/28269.mp3 Tr.3, “Ritualet” 6 min 11 This is well produced Fusion with some folk influence. These are my favourite tracks. Karl is a sax & goathornplayer & arranger. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/FUSION.html * Textile Rec. The George Burt/Raymond MacDonald Quintet with Lol Coxhill and Future Pilot Aka : Hotel Dilettante (US,2005)*° Tr.1, “Speed Boat Taxi” 4 min Improvisational border-jazz with group who started to improvise with folk at first, but this is hardly noticeable now, even when it also is not really jazz focused either. The improvisation skills aren’t too well developed yet, even with these great names to it. This track I think might be best, but still it’s rather chaotic. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog12.html#anchor_115 * Wolfgang Rec. V.A. Sampler 2005 : Tr.1, Eero Koivistoinen : “Paimensoitto” 5 min Tr.2, Johanna Livanainen ja Eero Koivistoinen : “Tanssivat Porot” 5 min 10 -47 2 very good jazz examples from the new sampler of this Finish label. * Voiceprint Brian Hopper : If Ever I am -with Robert Wyatt, Hugh Hopper, Frances Knight, Robert Fenner, Graham Flight, Ansy- (UK,rec.2000-2003, iss.2004)*°' Tr.4, “Sometimes it is” 5 min Tr.6, “Hope For Hapiness” 10 min A compromising attempt for a kind of Wild Flowers reunion lead by Brian Hopper. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog12.html#anchor_117 * Silence Rec. Hepa Halme Prospekt : Nine Steps in line of Beauty (FIN,2001)**** -variations, improvisations & meditations on a theme by Ornette Coleman- Tr.7, “Step VII” 6 min Tr.9, “Step IX” 3 min Tr.2, “Step II” 7 min 16 Very well mixed and produced, slowly evolving New Fusion with a sincere meditative effect. Step II has some rhythmical electronic and programming and scratches and has a more “modern jazz fusion” touch. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/FUSION.html * Irma Group V.A. : Colors : Nordic (DK,N,FIN,S,ICE,2002)*°° Tr.3, Xploding Plastix (N) : “More Powah To Yah” 6 min Tr.12, Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson & Sigur Rós (ICE) : “Yfirum” 5 min 16 Modern mixing and beats mixed with jazz, Fusion, Art-Pop. Xploding Plastix (is closest to Venetian Snares which I airplay next) is my favourite track of the compilation. It has a great looped complex electronic breakbeat and complex percussion and other rhythms with double bass and cello loop & sax ? etc. Most tracks on the compilation, like most new modern beat related music, have similar good sound mix ideas, but are much more looped and repetitive. Tr.12 has orchestrations mixed with ambient rhythm, and is a bit more conincidental in nature. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Norway.html * Planet Mu Venetian Snares : Rossz Csillag Allat Született (CAN,2005)***** Tr.1, “Sikertelenség” 1 min Tr.2, “Szerencsétlen" 5 min Tr.3, "Öngyilkos Vasárnap" 4 min Tr.4, "Felbomlasztott Mentokocsi” 4 min 14 -108 I could easily airplay the whole album without hestitating, but I can’t afford that. Great intelligent breakbeats with serious contemporary classical chamber music compositions, with a few old samples (use of a Billie Holliday song), more quiet passages etc. For me, one of the best of 2005 so far. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog11.html#anchor_169 * Ilk Music Autofant : Family (DK,2004)***° Tr.3, "Rade Sham" 4 min Tr.4, "RbbR" 5 min Tr.6, "In My Arms" 9 min Tr.8, "Toomuchli" 3 min 20 Very fine Future-jazz mixed with nice “acoustic-electronica”. All airplayed tracks are excellent crossovers between electronic and acoustic playing. “In My Arms” is slightly psychedelic. “Toomuchli” is toymusic-like. Autofant just won the Jazzmusic award for "Best Crossover" in 2004, (see www.dkjazz.dk). They surely deserved recognition. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/prog13.html#anchor_120 Outro : primitive electronic pop : * Stupido Rec. Desert Planet : Mario built my hot rod (FIN,2005)****° Tr.1, “Return of the Ninja Droids” 4 min Tr.2, “Breakout Button” 3 min 7 Great & unique post-Kraftwerk -area Computerworld- electropop, inspired by early computergames like pac-man. A must for any “Kraftwerk : Computerworld” fan. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/FINLAND_GROUPS.html * M.ForP./9PM Aavikko : History of music -selected non-album material 1995-2000- (FIN,2003)**°°° Aavikko-7” : Tr.3, “Samojedien Keskuudessa” 3 min Tr.4, “Krakovan Niityt” 2 min 5 Not too well recorded, in attitude punk-disco, attractive, music with primitive computer & cheap keyboards. Also unique in its kind. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/FINLAND_GROUPS.html * Fonal Rec. TV-Resistori : Intiaanidisko (FIN,2005)*° Tr.4, “Näen Tanssivan Sun Uudestaan” 5 min Tr.10,“Kuin Hiroshima” 5 min -150 Pop music with a favourite element of the group : a primitive synthesizer. These are two favourite tracks. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/FINLANDGROUPS2.html outro : * Crucial Blast Genghis Tron EP (US,2004)****° Tr.1-3, 10 min Fantastic mix of brutal metal, prog, electropop, triphop and whatever.. Probably hated by electropop and metal lovers but loved by progressive crossover lovers like me.
