Not perfectly recorded but worth hearing. Larry Porter studied at Berkelee, rebab at Kabul and sarod in New Dheli. Here he plays jazz piano. Larry Porter plays the Afghan rebab on various other releases. I will end my show with two examples of this. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/indojazzreview2.html * Gr.M.Hands R. Julian Franks : Jewel In The Lotus (UK,2004)*° Tr.9, “Flute & tabla improvisation” 4 min Tr.11, “Three sun-drenched laughing hangs” (recorded in Crete) 4 min 8 -50 Percussionist with project delving into and towards eastern/ Indian territories. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIAWORLD.html * Earth Sounds Rez Abbasi : Snake Charmer (IND/US,2005)***° Tr.2, “Pearl” 9 min Tr.5, “Kismet” 8 min 17 Very fine until excellent jazz until jazzrock with Indian ideas involved and adapted in it, by Pakistani/Indian rooted guitarist/sitar-guitarist Rez Abbasi and band. There aren’t many items with this kind of original approach, with a rewarding blend. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/indojazzreview2.html * Leaf Rec. Asa-Chang & Junray : Jun Ray Song Hang (JAP,2002)***** Tr.1, “Hana” 7 min Tr.2, “Preach” 5 min Tr.5, “Goo-Goo-Gung” 3 min Tr.8, “Kokoni Sachiari” 4 min Tr.9, “Radio-No-Youni” (Comme a la radio) 7 min -85 Highly original new music lead by two percussionists (tabla & tabla-bongo) and programmer. Unique in its kind. One of the most talent groups of last couple of years. Work of genius ! Partly inspired by Indonesian & Indian standards. A must-have heard. Track 9 is an original cover from a Brigitte Fontaine track, besides with similar arrangements also with crazy electronic sounds, sitar. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog13.html#anchor_148 * Leaf Rec. Asa-Chang & Junray : Tsu Gi Ne Pu (EP) (JAP,2002)****° Tr.1, «Toremoro» 10 min Tr.2, “Tsuginepo To Ittemita” 5 min 15 EP from similar quality and originality as the full album. Equally recommended. Partly inspired by a rhythmical tone-poem. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIABEATS.html * Private Barbara Markay : Shambhala Dance (US,2005)- Not used but only reviewed. This is World Beat/New age dance meditation music. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIABEATS.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Earth Tones M. Violet Samudra : Bliss Beyond (US,2005)**** Tr.7, “Into the light” 8 min Tr.11, “Bliss beyond” 7 min 15 Fine fusion group which combines Indian, Middle Eastern and “Western” Fusing ideas, lead by guitarist, percussionist & a Middle Eastern strings player. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Doublemoon Rec. Mercan Dede : Su (TÜ,2004)**°’ Tr.5, «Ab-i Bekak» 7 min Trance-rhythmic Turkish & fusing Sufi music. Two tracks are with an Indian guest artist. To fit best with this show I airplayed one of both these tracks. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview1.html * Doublemoon Rec. Burhan Öçal & Pete Namlook : Sultan Orhan (TÜ,2004)**° Tr.5, “Part 5” 2 min Tr.7, “Part 7” 7 min 9 Best cooperation so far between trance-music painter Pete Namlook and Turkish percussionist & multi-instrumentalist Burhan Öçal. Sounds like a spacey soundtrack with lots of percussion. Not always less-is-best approach, because there’s at the same time some overuse of production and production effects. It took 5 years to complete this album. The bass vocals with percussion remind me of some Yellow (90’s) tracks. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html * Doublemoon Rec. V.A. : East 2 West –ethno-electronic tales from Istanbul- (TÜ,2004)***° Tr.1, Ilhan Ersahin’s Wonderland : “Oriental Wind” 8 min Compilation of interesting new Turkish electronic-Fusion groups with a few rather essential tracks. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/TURKCOMPI.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Private Stephan Mikés : Secret Songs of the Sitar Player (US,2002)*°’ Very light weight rhythmic album with sitar and rhythms. Second time I try to include a track in a radioshow, but when I take each track separate it can’t convince me. I give up trying to list it. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIABEATS.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * private Larry Porter with Franc Menusan, tabla & dhol : The magical rebab of Larry Porter (US,199?)**? Tr.1, “Dharti Kahe Pukar Ke” 8 min (from Hindi film Do Bigha Zamin) Rebab is an afghan string instrument.
