Info on all these albums : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar.html Grading measured on 1. uniqueness and 2. perfect whole to listen to * ok ** good **° some tracks are better, more original *** very good, good enough if interested in the genre ***° some tracks are perfect, tendency to be so ***°° unique for some reasons, even when some details could have been more perfect as they already are **** perfect, a fine example, and a must to try if interested in the genre ****° some tracks are completely unique, and the release is very fine example too ***** a classic, a monster, a must have heard, can't get better like this, unique ' or may be worth more, I am not sure Part 1 : raga like improvisations * Robo Rec. Mauro Antonio Pawlowski : Secret Guitar (B,2003)***'' Tr.1, "At the house of the lightning" 5 min Tr.2, "Evening Girls" 4 min 10 Glad to have an interesting release coming from Antwerpen. Somewhat independent in style improvisations on the guitar, very individual, raga-like. Not as a developed style trough the years, but as a moment of true inspiration. Cover were printed at second hand sleeves turned inside out. I checked mine. It came from an album from Angelo Branduardi. It was Branduardi upside down and inside out. Pawlowski is most known in Antwerpen especially for his Evil Superstars group. * Locust Music Var.Artists : "Wooden Guitar" (var.2003)***°° Tr.1, Jack Rose : "Red Horse II" 15 min 25 I didn't hear Jack Rose before. This is an American steel string raga like track. Very nice. Very different from what I heard on the net from his group Pelt who I believe used droning and such as structure. Some reviews of Jack Roses products : http://www.fakejazz.com/reviews/2002/rose.shtml & http://www.forcedexposure.com/artists/rose.jack.html http://www.forcedexposure.com/artists/pelt.html Soundfiles of his group Pelt : http://www.midheaven.com/artists/pelt.html * Locust Music Var.Artists : "Wooden Guitar" (var.2003)***°° Tr.2, Steffen Basho Junghans : "Another Thuringian raga" 15 min 40 Another great raga guitar track by a master of the style. Steffen made a few impressionist guitar releases, a few raga guitar releases, and a few experimental guitar releases. Info on Steffen Basho Junghans : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Basho.html * The Communion Label Ben Kunin : Acoustic Adventures (US,199?)**** Tr.1-2, "Pastoral Suite" 7 min Tr.4, "A minor Key" 5 min 12 52 Fine warm raga-like fingerpicking guitar music. Second part of the "Pastoral Suite" is based upon a composition by Ali Akbar Khan. "A minor key" has a memory of a melancholy melody, on a fingerpicking continuity in rhythm. Ben Kunin learned Hindustan music and sarod at the Ali Akbar Khan school before. Info with soundfiles : http://www.midheaven.com/bin/search.cgi/datedartist=ben%20kunin * Cuneiform Rec. Various Artists : "156 strings" (var.,2003)***°° Tr.3, Rauoul Bjorkenheim : "Lullaby heart away" 5 min 57 Great and gifted playing on this bluesy track with "hand" slide-guitar playing that reminds me very much of how to play some Indian music instruments. Raoul played before with Finnish jazz musicians, Paul Schütze, Edward Vesala, Bill Laswell,.. Info on Raoul Bjorkenheim : http://www.raoulbjorkenheim.com/ Contact : rosebud@raoulbjorkenheim.com Part 2 : technical advanced guitar : * Cuneiform Rec. Various Artists : "156 strings" (var.,2003)***°° Tr.1, Gyan Riley : "Eyes of Orion" 5 min 63 Truly gifted guitarist, with style close to classical guitar styles, but much more than that. * New Albion Rec. Gyan Riley : food for the bearded (US,2002)**** Tr.1, "Piedad" 8 min Tr.11, "Balama" 5 min 13 76 "Piedad" is in a very fine classical music style. "Balama" is an improvisatory arrangement of a traditional composition in the Indian raga Bhimpalasi. Gyan's father, the contemporary composer/improviser/minimal music founder Terry Riley sings with his sage voice on this song. A song that has somewhat in common with Stephan Micus style of music (especially the pieces with guitar and voice). Gyan Riley has as well attention for the spontaneous melodic part as for the (echo) sound of the guitar. I didn't hear often as much skills for both approaches in balance. New Albion records is a contemporary music label. Info on Gyan Riley : http://www.gyanriley.com/bio.html * Cuneiform Rec. Various Artists : "156 strings" (var.,2003)***°° Tr.11, Richard Leo Johnson : "Hazard Pay" 6 min 82 Technically and musically nice fingerpicking track. Various Artists : "156 strings" (var.,2003)***°° Tr.13, Rod Poole : "Kaledoscopic Sunday" 5 min 87 First example of a thumb piano like fingerpicking on the guitar, with an almost meccano like touch. More info on Rod Poole : Reviews of Rod Poole products at http://www.inkblotmagazine.com/rev-archive/Rod_Poole_December.htm & http://www.guitar9.com/summrodpoole.html * Locust Music Var.Artists : "Wooden Guitar" (var.2003)*** Tr.4, Steffen Basho-Junghans : "Smiling Penguins" 6 min 93 Second example of a thumb piano like fingerpicking on the guitar. * Cuneiform Rec. Various Artists : "156 strings" (var.,2003)***°° Tr.19, Steffen Basho-Jughans : "part 1 from the Virgin Orchestra n° 1" 8 min 101 Creative piece on a naturally prepared, this is a still untuned virgin guitar piece. The playing itself seems to tune the instrument. As I once read : "a good musician tunes even the worst instrument just by playing it". At first notes and chords this might seem very odd. This first part can be seen as feeling what the guitar has in its core. Then the actual fingerpicking improvisation begins. It actually works fine with this oddly tuning, in the same way as a John Cage prepared piano piece. A concept that could only succeed with a genius guitarist. * Homemade Music Eric Wallack : Grendel (US,2002)****' Tr.1, part 1, 10 min 111 Another fight with the limited fundaments in the guitar, an experimental improvisation piece cut in various parts. Ground braking the first fundaments of the actual guitar. Mostly in a very quiet way. This is the first part. Very talented individual guitarist. Meditative and in a way spiritual in its concept. Impossible to repeat. * Cuneiform Rec. Various Artists : "156 strings" (var.,2003)***°° Tr.9, Jean-Paul Bourelly : Pulse and remembrance" 6 min 117 Odd track of ping pong play with guitar case and advanced and vibrant fingerpicking. A great track that fits perfectly with Eric Wallack's tracks (especially with track 3 and somewhat with track 5. Track 3 I left out because of time limitations). Played in an even more technically gifted and self-assured way. A great track. Info on Jean-Paul Bourelly : http://www.bourelly.com/ Contact : bourelly@snafu.de * Homemade Music Eric Wallack : Grendel (US,2002)**** Tr.5, part 5, 11 min 11 130 Second part of the concept piece. Unfortunately I had to leave out two tracks that I also wanted to play because of time limitations. In this way it still fits the radioshow very well. Fits nicely with the Jean-Paul Bourelly track. A more up tempo improvisation, clacking / clapping the guitar with fingerpicking. * Homemade Music Vermis (Eric Wallack) (US,2002)*** Tr.5, "Aphid" 2 min Tr.7, "Firefly" 4 min Tr.2, "Cricket" 4 min 10 140 All track with names of insects. Little islands of creations on its own. Especially the use of experimental fingerpicking and sliding guitar worked out various times in a very original way. "Aphid" is cello & guitars, small instruments. "Firefly" is with acoustic guitars & some background semi- electronic noises. Two very nice tracks. "Vermis" does not mean like it could mean in Dutch "the missing of something", but derives from the Latin word.. Last track, "Cricket" has a kind of "Paris-Texas" mood (Ry Cooder). With some cricket noises. Eric Wallack also worked lately with Greg Segal on a release with less attention to the guitar as these two pieces played in this show. Review of that release : http://singersong.homestead.com/REV.html * Cuneiform Rec. Various Artists : "156 strings" (var.,2003)***°° Tr.10, Janet Feder : "Lightning strikes" 5 min 145 Beautiful experimental music on the guitar. With odd melodic use of the guitar and fingerpicking. More info : http://www.janetfeder.com/ Contact : brainbox@janetfeder.com Compared to older examples of older experimenters with the guitar the artists I showed here al had a certain refinement, advancement, mood in their style. Various of such earlier experimental examples were much more basic, rough, avant garde. I never liked very much intellectual approaches like followers from Fred Frith that didn't dig their pieces yet from their heart or with a certain heartbeat feeling. The artists I showed were different. I only possess one older example of experimental guitar : outro : Admission to music Luigi Archetti : Das Ohr (D,1992)**° Tr.22, "Vorhofgang" 1 min Tr.13, "resonator" 1 min Tr.22, "Vorhofgang" 1 min 150 Release with some nice ideas of nut-end experimental guitar & electrified experimental guitar pieces from former Krautrock group Guru Guru.
