“Psyche van het Folk”, Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium. New American styles with crossovers, like Indian Fusions, guitarists. 2004-08-25 PART 1 : -JAZZ FUSIONS WITH INDIAN INFLUENCES MOSTLY- * Private The Udhav Shinde Trio (IND/US/UK)°°° Tr.3, “Dreamers and wanderers” 19 min 20 Soundfile : http://www.cdbaby.com/mp3lofi/udhavshinde-03.m3u Fine combination of sax with tabla like instrument and tanpura. Review at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/indojazzreview.html * Private Jessie Allen Cooper : Sound Travels (US,2003)° Tr.3, “Awakening” 7 min 7 Soundfile : http://paradoxproductions.com/CooperArts/Music/mp3%20Sound%20Travels/03-AwakeningCSW.mp3 More mainstream ideas for this jazz release in fusing world elements. This track I like best, because sound of sax on its own is good, with fitting accompaniment. It is also chosen for this show because of the small Indian element. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/WORLD.html * Alantara Rec. Milton Marsh : We are not separate from spirit, we are in it (US,2003)*** Tr.2, “Everlasting beauty” 4 min Soundfile : http://www.cduniverse.com/soundsample.asp?PID=6114252&cart=197691225&se=10&P=W&ram=us%2Fuswm2%2F226%2F495226%5F1%5F02%2Easx%3Fobj%3Dv30924 Tr.3, “Alankara” 7 min Soundfile : http://www.cduniverse.com/soundsample.asp?PID=6114252&cart=197691225&se=10&P=W&ram=us%2Fuswm2%2F226%2F495226%5F1%5F03%2Easx%3Fobj%3Dv30924 Tr.7, “Psychic impulses” 1 min 12 Sounfile : http://www.cduniverse.com/soundsample.asp?PID=6114252&cart=197691225&se=10&P=W&ram=us%2Fuswm2%2F226%2F495226%5F1%5F07%2Easx%3Fobj%3Dv30924 Good smooth jazz release with string arrangements, and piano solo leads with jazz band. Milton Marsh plays sax and composed the pieces. He’s also professor of Music and Director of Afro-American Music Studies. Especially the first track has something of the spiritual black fusion music. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/BLACKSPIRIT.html PS. Other releases with great black spirit, and a fusion of jazz with ethnic elements, including the use of sitar, is Brother Ah, who followed in the early days Sun Ra. He had a few re-releases, also recently on Ikef Records, which is distributed by Locust Music : * Locust Music Henry Flynt : C Tune (nov 17th,1980)(US,1980)***°’(?) Tr.1, (fragment) ->>23 min 62 47:21 minute raga improvisation, a psychedelic meditation, by Henry Flint on electric violin accompanied by C.C.Hennix on (Pandit Pran Nath) tampura. The release is sold out at source now. Henry Flint made various individual realeases showing his own vision on "new American ethnic music" fusing avant-garde music (minimalism, free-form music and Dadaism) and even hillbilly music. Highly recommended release. A new development for the new American guitar music. He had ragtime influence, but here was also influenced by Mach Ochs raga pieces on guitar, on the Takoma label. He worked together with Glenn Jones more often (see further down). PS. Jack Rose is part of the band Pelt. This is perhaps one of the best pieces on the album. Review and links : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar3.html * Strange Attr. Glenn Jones : This is the wind that blows it out (US,2004)***°° Tr.2, “Sphinx unto curious men” 10 min Tr.3, “Friday Nights With” 6 min 16 113 Brilliant guitarist , much more into the technical detail and with more melodic richness compared to all earlier played guitarists. These two tracks show a very subtle guitar music. Second track is like early Kottke. Various other tracks are more American styled. Highly recommended release ! He is also member of Cul De Sac. He did another album with John Fahey. Review and links : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar3.html * Private Dan Cunningham : I think of Home (US,2003)*°° Tr.2, “Plant a garden” 5 min -118 Soundfile : http://www.cdbaby.com/mp3lofi/pickndawg2-02.m3u Guitarist, cellist, vocalist. This tracks I like most : “Plant a garden”, is subtle and nice. Other tracks use more simple ideas. He’s said to be influenced by the Appalachian styles. Some thought about the Appalachian styles in general can be found at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/files/apalachian.txt and http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar3.html where you can also find a review and links for Dan Cunningham. * Indies Rec. Dagmar Andrtová-Vonková : Milí Moji (CZ,1976-1995)****° CD2 : Tr.4, “Bez Andčla” 2 min Tr.3, “Tobe” 6 min Soundfile : http://www.indiesrec.cz/DataFiles/Album/00000241/Download/Tobe.mp3 Tr.7, “Zpev” 4 min Tr.8, “Chlapci na Tom Hornim Konci” 5 min Soundfile : http://www.indiesrec.cz/DataFiles/Album/00000241/Download/Chlapci%20na%20tom%20hornim%20konci.mp3 Tr.9, “Holoubek” 5 min 22 Guitar/vocalist who is at both aspects performing as brilliant. Even when not understanding the words, the music works very directly. The double CD has been reissued this year. This is to show just one other approach, outside US. Recommended. The other CD I will airplay in another show. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/CZECH3.html * Private Death Vessel : Stay Close (US,2003)**° Tr.3, “Blowing Cave” 4 min Tr.6, “Mandan Drink” 4 min Not easy to define in style independent group. Perhaps this is another contribution to the new American styles too. It has inspiration in various roots and remains original at the same time. Second track is with Micah Blue Smaldone on guitar. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters-2.html * N.EastInd.Rec. Micah Blue Smaldone : Some Sweet Day (US,2003)***? Tr.6, “Blind Boy Rag” 3 min Tr.1, “Springtime Blues” 2 min Ragtime-blues (or whatever this is called, like Appalachian) item in a seemingly “old time” style !! Guitar and voice only. A shame there wasn’t time to play more of this. Review and links : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar3.html From this point in the radioshow, I could reface the other guitar albums and listen to the more American styled tracks on it but I don’t have enough airplay time for that. So I can only can have a suggestive thought one could do that. PS. Three dvd’s are just out : One of them is : “The soul of a man” by Wim Wenders about Skip James, Blind Willie Johnson,.. Another announcement : Filmmuseum plays this “The soul of a man” in August, In Muhkacinema, photomuseum : http://www.muhka.be/toont_film_film.php?la=nl&id=128 More info : http://www.wim-wenders.com/movies/movies_spec/thesoulofaman/the-soul-of-a-man.htm Previews at http://www.pbs.org/theblues/aboutfilms/wenders.html It is too much a shame still too many people associate the blues with Eric Clapton and such, only because Cream did a wonderful cover version once, and many people tried to stimulate the idea of Eric Clapton becoming their white blues symbol. This idea is also so much stimulated because blueslovers didn’t want to listen to “niggers”, but wanted a white man. Therefore Eric Clapton amongst a few others was also overestimated as guitarist. Iif you look for the real blues go to see this movie and you’ll find out ! PS. Also released recently (only got this in just now) : * Soft Abuse    Langtry : As Upon The Road Thereto (US,2004)**** Guitarist of Iron & Wine. Will get airplay in a future radioshow.
