Playlist “Psyche van het Folk”, Radio Centraal RADIOSHOW EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC INSTRUMENTS PART 4 : EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC INSTRUMENTS & CONTEMPORARY MUSIC -CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS 1- : * distr.World Serpent Roger Doyle : Babel vol 1 (UK,1981,1988-1995) From all Irish composers I was pointed at this one as being one of the more experimental ones. This piece is an imaginary or pseudo-radioshow (American night-radio) , but it lacks intuitive & emotional depth. It’s an over- intellectualisation of the ideas, without even becoming interesting musically. No, I don’t like this particular release. Never the less it kept my curiosity open. The music is more experimental industrial build by electronics and electro-acoustic sounds. This is much more interesting than what I heard in vol 1.It has cold but vividly moving descriptive sounds. Some other tracks have also some programming and avant-garde broken apart sounds and synthesizer as part of the composition (“Earth to Earth”).Yumnus has some sound-architectural French horn in the background space playing. “Entry level” sounds like based upon the sounds of switching the radio button forward and back all the time. “The dressing room” has some quietly moving avant garde sax sounds mostly. “Concert music : pagoda charm” uses a programmed Chinese melody cut and split into a more difficult & fragmented avant garde melody. “Mansard” uses slightly distant piano & some quiet environmental sounds. “Squat” also uses similar avant garde use of quietly evolving clarinet, combined with distant other sounds. Not easy music. Mostly pretty intellectual. But it has its moments that it creates a certain musical architectural environment. This piece is quiet interesting. Info : http://www.kryptonale.de/GlasKasl.htm * Ghk Glasmusik-Ensemble with Walter Sons : Glasmusik (D,1982,1992)**** Very similar performance. Good quality, & nice evolution, like an abstract painting. Info on Walter Sons : http://www.uni-kassel.de/fb3/musik/Html/Lehrende/Walter_Sons.htm * Can.Counc.for Arts Glass Orchestra : live from the archive vol 1 (CAN,1977-2002)**° Tr.2, “04/29/92 2nd set” 5 min (Tr.4, “Crystal ball” 4 min) 24 I played a very old record of the group before, which was experimental music with glass instruments. Here the group shows to be also more like a glass music entertainment group, using rhythmic patterns and sometimes humoristic sounds, especially in part 2 . Both volumes are compilation of their mostly more recent works. This chosen track is a compromise between both worlds. * Can.Counc.for Arts Glass Orchestra : live from the archive vol 2 (CAN,1977-2002)*°° Volume 2 of the Glass Orchestra is very similar in style & quality. I airplayed the 1977 track before in my radioshow (See this playlist with a few other glass artists at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/files/emi.txt) Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/overtone.html -CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS 2- : Thomas Bloch I played before in the first radioshow with glass instruments. He also made nice classical music. I will play a small part of it * Private Thomas Bloch : Missa Cantate (rec.1999,iss.2004) (I prefer not to grade it for it’s classical music) Tr.1, “Introi” 9 min 33 Played with the Paderewski Philharmonic Orchestra, with Jörg Wachisnski male soprano. Thomas Bloch also played before with John Cage & Radiohead. The male soprano alone is already worth hearing. Naxos just agreed to publish this first privately released Missa Cantate. This “Introit” has been selected by some participants to the next New York Oratorio Competition. More on Bloch and his glass music instruments : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/overtone.html & http://www.chez.com/thomasbloch/ Announcement : Thomas Bloch comes to Antwerpen for the next piece : Jeanne au Bucher, an oratorio by Arthur Honegger, on a text by Paul Claudel. It is composed for two comedians who speak (Jeanne d'Arc and Frere Dominique), solo singers, choir (adults and children) and orchestra (which includes ondes Martenot, but also saxophones - which is not so often in this kind of music, two pianos which are sometimes prepared to simulate and play a kind of bar music and so on). Gent - Bijloke - 26/6 - 20pm Antwerpen - Elisabeth Hall - 27/6 - 20pm -MUSICAL SAW- : Private Natalia Paruz : Hark! An Angel sings (US,2002)*°° Tr.4, “Ave Maria”(Schubert)” 6 min Tr.10,«Silent Night-reprise» 3 min Tr.8, «We three kings» 3 min 12 45 Nice version of Schubert’s classic with the musical saw. This comes from a Christmas CD but I didn’t mind playing it now. These three fragments I found good. “Silent Night” seems to have an extra sound coming to peep/sound along, which makes the recording better. “We three kings” is a jazz(rock) tune. It seems to combines well with the musical saw. Full review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/overtone.html * Chinese label? Li Yuang : A Special Collection (CHINA,1998)*°° Tr.5, “Wang Ningmei” 6 min Tr.10,“Drawing Camels” 4 min 10 Charming Chinese classical orchestra & synthesizer with drummachine, enjoyable. Other soundfiles linked with small review and cover at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/overtone.html * private Happy Martin : Paris (UK,2001)***** Tr.2, “Someone to watch over me” 3 min Soundfile : http://www.musicalsaw.com/ramfile/happy2.ram Tr.4, “Over the Rainbow” 3 min Soundfile : http://www.musicalsaw.com/ramfile/happy4.ram Tr.5, “Albinoni's Adagio in G minor” 4 min Soundfile : http://www.musicalsaw.com/ramfile/happy5.ram Tr.6, “But Beautiful” 4 min 15 This time over the whole line incredible correct AND sensitive playing. This is pure gold compared to most other recordings. Piano & musical saw. If you liked Clara Rockmore’s release this might be the next in line to appreciate. I thought first, hearing the quality of the soundfiles on line, and the black and white picture this could only be from the thirties, but it wasn’t. Here the musical saw really is “singing”. Info : http://www.happymartin.com/cd_paris.php Reviews at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/overtone.html * Delos Clara Rockmore : The Art of the Theremin (US,1987)***** TR.1, Rachmaninoff : “vocalise” 4 min One of my all time favourite albums. A master nit like anyone else in playing the theremin. Highly emotionally rich stuff ! Old classical music by theremin and piano. I don’t know from any occasion where people did not cry listening to Clara’s music. More info : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/THEREMIN_linkspage.html#anchor_13235 & http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Experimental_Music_Instruments.html outro : *Ozella Music Karl Seglem : New North (N,2004)**** Tr.4, “Frame two” 4 min Beautiful Fusion album. This track is played with goat horns, wood, electronics, guitars, drums. Review will be added at my webpages later. More will be played in a later radioshow. Ellen Fullman & Konrad Sprenger (US,2004)**°’ Tr.1, “Glittering Glass” 3 min Tr.8, “Simple Words” 6 min 10 Ellen Fullman is mostly know for her long string instrument. Strangely enough she also made a singer-songwriter post-rock release. Of course she also uses her experimental instrument. Konrad Sprenger adds other interesting sounds. First track sounds a bit like Velvet Underground (era “White Light White heat”). “Simple Words” brings performance contemporary pop artist Laurie Anderson in mind. Fine release ! Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/expmu.html -BART HOPKIN- : * Windworld Bart Hopkin : Instrumentarium Hopkins (US,2002)***° Tr.1, “Opening” 1 min Tr.2, “Libido, destruto & Darlene” 3 min Tr.3, “Branching” 2 min Tr.4, “Chewing Music” 3 min Tr.16,“Ridges” 4 min Tr.21,“Use me” 4 min 16 This is a great enjoyable enthusiastic colourful compilation of varied sounds, ideas and compositions. Here we hear a good portion of balance between invention, presentation, composition, colourful tones, beauty and humour. These tracks I find most successful. Reminds me slightly of Pierre Bastien. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/emi.html -LELAVISION –EXP MUSIC GROUP- -: Presenting his musical sculptures is even more than just a presentation. The musical instruments and improvisational compositions work as a transcendent organic sound creature. The group has impressive performances, both visually as a musically. With some humour touch as well ! The performance on the soundsculptures create another “soundsculpture” in music, with refined vivid melodic and sound-evolutions. * Elalusions Ela Lamblin : Sculptuaral (US,1996)****° Tr.1, “Siddharta” 10 min Tr.2, “Lookfar” 5 min (slightly shortened) Tr.7, “Rhythm Pygmy” 5 min Tr.9, “Spider’s Lunch” 2 min Tr.10, “Tpeflute N’Tabla” 4 min 26 102 Composition with the stamenphone containing a metal water boil resonating chamber and strings at the outside. Second track is played by a harp-like instrument with additional tabla. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/expmu.html * Private Ela Lamblin : Tone Pond (sound-sculptures of Ela Lamblin) (US,2000)***° Tr.1, “Seeds of Sound” 1 min (seed pots, breath) Tr.5, “Oasis” 8 min (livewire, singing stones) 9 111 Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/expmu.html *Lelavsion Ela Lamblin : Long Period Events (US,2003)***°° Tr.1, “Harmonic Tremors” 6 min (rainflower, violcano, coola) Tr.5, “Cooling” 4 min (coola) 10 121 Tr.8, “Wavefields” 5 min 126 (violcano) (shortened a bit) Worlds of soundvisions. Very varied.
