INFONIE-RAÔUL DUGUAY JEAN COHEN-SOLAL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction on L’Infonie at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/infonie.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Mucho Gusto L'Infonie vol 3 (CAN,1970)****° Tr.1, "Ode à l'affaire -ouverture" 4 min Starting with a few seconds of chaotic -the elephants of Alexander the great trying to cross the mountains, or something- madness, combined with a raid on a madmen’s group, followed by a real, arranged overture. starts off, very filmic. Tr.2, "L'Affaire" 2 min Soundfile : http://www.aquariusrecords.org/audio/linfonieode.rm A kind of group's beat poem, ending with a similar few seconds of madness. Also here are already used inner esoteric plays with possible meanings syllables, parts of words, sounds. Tr.3, "J'ai perdu 15 cents dans le nez froid d'un ange bronzé" 3 min Soundfile : http://www.aquariusrecords.org/audio/linfonieperdu.rm Very much like Colombier / Pierre Henry's hit "Psyche Rock" or "E.V.A." from Jean Jacques Perry, a kind of dance rock track with additional moog. Tr.6, "Viens danser le "OK Là!" 4 min Soundfile : http://www.aquariusrecords.org/audio/linfonieviens.rm 70’s dance music with over the top mad vocals a sheep like choir. Tr.9, "Intermezzo" 1 min Tr.10, "Agnus Dei" 6 min Beautifully arranged Bach piece for brass, -a bit comparable to what Moondog did with his own work on "Sax for a Pax", to give some idea-. Tr.11, "Desafinado" 6 min 26 Raôul Duguay's over-expressive performance of a text about the surreal vision about l'Infonie, followed by a avant/free form improvisation on sax, piano, electric bass, drums, with an underlying recognisable melody. Bonus track : Tr.12, "Histoire de la p'tite ch'nille électrique qui fut métamorphosée en ch'nille naturelle par la fée Trobouguorbrotelle" (from "contes infoniaques", 1969) 4 min 30 A surreal text with expressive performance & reactions. * ? L'Infonie vol 33 (CAN,1971)? Not reissued yet. This piece is based upon Riley's in C, with Raôul Duguay, trumpet. It should have been perfect for my show in many ways. “In C” is like a kind of mantra in favour of life and its manifestation. Still inspired by the ’67 expo, where new ways of living were considered (meditation, drugs, macrobiotic cooking,..) this meant another modification of our perceptions within the time limitation of a music piece. “In C” has the advantage of being able to be repeated to express that all in all manifestation (“touttt é to bouttt” / everything is in everything). Musically it was inspired by La Monte Young’s “House of Dreams”, performed by musicians like Terry Riley, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Bob Ashley, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen (“Mantra” & “Stimmung”). With Pandit Pran Nath from Tibet La Monte Young and Terry Riley sang the “Ôm” pulsation, expressed trough “in C” in 53 motives. Express everything or “Express toutt” becomes the life impulse of a kind of locomotive of life calling “toutt-toutt-toutt”, followed by 53 wagons. All motves, languages are reassembled and dissembled by one another, as a symbol of the eternal change, an omega of evolution. The goal through this piece was to get to that ever changing evolution pulse, transforming into a hymn to life. Life and its creation are celebrated through the forming of each cell and atom. Tr.3, section 18 (fragm 33 sec.) 1 min Tr.4, section 19-23 4 min 45 soundfile : http://www.aquariusrecords.org/audio/linfoniesection1923.m3u Duguay with mad voice and (jazz)rock accompaniment. Tr.5, section 24-.. (fragm) 4 min 49 A bit more contemporary classic arranged. CD2, Tr.3, "Prelude XXII" 7 min 27 57 Another Bach interpretation, followed by a more amateuristic theatre performance, followed by bells combined with “cucuricoo’s”. Info : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/infonie.html * ? L'Infonie vol 3333 (CAN,1973?)? Album I don't know anything about. Not reissued yet. * Between 1968 and 1976 Duguay made 8 theatre pieces, and between 1970 and 1973 a movie. Between 1966 and 1970 het was also professor of philosophy at the Montréal University. * EMI/Capitol Raôul Duguay : Alllo Toulmond (CAN,1975)****° Tr.1, "Si tu ne m'aimez pas" 2 min Tr.2, "Alllô Tôulmond'" 7 min Tr.4, "Tôuttt étô bôuttt" 5 min Tr.5, "Le désert" 4 min Tr.6, "Prélude ô bômbardez" 1 min Tr.7, "La bittt à tibi" 7 min 25 82 Chords and words : http://www.chez.com/extraguitare/labittatibi.html Hidden genius in very accessible semi-normal songs and varied arrangements. With captivating voice and way / wide range of expressive singing. A shame I had to leave out the 12 minute long "le voyage". Info on Duguay : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Raoul_Duguay.html * EMI/Capitol Raôul Duguay : L'Envol (CAN,1976)***°° Tr.1, "Alllô" 2 min Tr.2, "La Sôlitud" 3 min Tr.3, "L'Envôl" 10 min Tr.4, "Al Enavap" 4 min 19 101 Especially side one I like a lot from this album. It's a bit like philosophic poetry with emotions in music. Info on Duguay : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Raoul_Duguay.html * EMI/Capitol Raôul Duguay : M (CAN,1977)***°° Tr.1, "M{(û)(e)}" 7 min Tr.2, "Lîl" 5 min Tr.3, "L'L" 5 min 17 118 Also from this album I especially like these songs of first side. All these songs are arranged with classical arrangements. A shame this is all solo work from the 70's I have from him. These 3 albums are not reissued yet. Only a compilation album is available. Info on Duguay : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Raoul_Duguay.html * I heard two more later works of Duguay. One was with simple electronica, another was a contemporary music piece, a poem interpreted Boudreau, called “Golghota”, which is a difficult, more inaccessible music piece. It received a price. Duguay continued his career, and was asked for various functions (educative, animating, critic, on conferences, as philosophical consultant, .. * Mio Rec. Jean Cohen-Solal : Flutes Libres (F,1971)***°° Tr.1, "Concerto Cyclique" 10 min Tr.2, "Raga du Matain" 4 min 14 132 Very good release of an original flute player. With varied arrangements, and an avant prog openness to develop musical ideas. I did not play the experimental track. Essential avant-prog, and a very individual prog album with lots of free flute fundaments into the structured compositions. Difficult to leave out tracks. At “Ab Hoc et Ad Hac” I notice an odd Bach ? arrangement. * Mio Rec. Jean Cohen-Solal : Captain Tartophom (F,1973)***°° Tr.6, "Ludions" 5 min Soundfile : http://www.miorecords.com/Releases/JCSolal/1.mp3 Tr.7, "Ab Hoc et Ab Hac" 6 min Tr.10, "Fosfette Surprise" 5 min 148 First two airplayed tracks are prog rock with advanced ideas in sound. Recommended reissue. This one is more arranged in a still very individual and independent way, in various styles that were somewhat common in '73. The result is progressive. Review & links : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog4.html With soundfiles & extra info : http://www.miorecords.com/Releases/JCSolal/JCSOlal.htm * Elektra Rec. David Stoughton : Transformer (US,1968)*** experimental singer-songwriter album, with voice a bit like Buckley. Two tracks are more avant. Later he made an avant-prog musical, never published, and some avant contemporary tapes. Hope this finds a reissue one day too.
