Playlist 2nd week of June, 2003 for "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium. MID-> END 70'S BRAZIL (AND CUBAN) PROG FOLK, FOLK PROG & PSYCH FOLK, with special "COMUNIDADE S8" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Pirata Produções Terreno Baldio (BRAZ,1974)*** Tr.1, "Passaro Azul" 5 min Tr.8, "Grite" 6 min 11 Two beautiful tracks of a lesser known Brazil prog item that asked for me a few listens to reveal all qualities. The same album has been rerecorded in the nineties and reissued on the Brazilean "Progressive Rock" label. I didn't have the chance to compare both versions. This comes from the original LP. Info : http://www.rocksymphony.com/new23.htm & http://www.gepr.net/ta.html#TERRENOBALDIO Full cover (back & front sleeve) : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/files/terrenobaldiofrontweb.jpg COMUNIDADE S8 : About the group : "It was kind of a religious community from Niteroi (Rio de Janeiro), intended to help people with drug problems, showing the light, Jesus, etc etc. In fact, the lyrics are very boring, my Lord here, my Lord there, etc :-) It's better when you don't understand them." "All in all, "O Que Vira" and "Quem Deseja Ser Crianca" are very fair progressive rock albums." Marcelo S.B. I personally liked 4 of the 6 albums that were reissued lately. Cover scans : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/Latin.html * Trace Disc Comunidade S8 : O Rio das Aguas que Saram / "The River of Healing Waters" (BRAZ,1977)***°° Tr.2, "Boa Nova Sobre Salvaçao" 3 min Tr.6, "O Vós que Tendes Sede" 3 min Tr.9, "Para Onde Foi o Teu Amado ?" 5 min 11 22 In Ithaca /Agincourt / Tomorrow come Someday mood in most of the tracks. With a certain fragile content. Psych folk styled. I like especially track 9 with its narration, beautiful dual voices and lots of beautiful melodic organ (with acoustic guitar). The overall album is instrumentally with less instruments as in "Apelo .." but it still has a fine unique character. * Trace Disc Comunidade S8 : Quem Deseja Ser Criança : "Who Whishes to Be a Child" (BRAZ,1978)***°° Tr.6, "O Rio Vivo" 4 min Tr.8, "O Senhor, Livra a Minha Alma !" 4 min Tr.10, "Cantai Louvores ao Seu Nome" 6 min 15 37 Very interesting Folk Prog item with nice and original prog arrangements and singing. * Trace Disc Communidade S8 : O Que Virá ? / "What's (there) to Come" (BRAZ,1981)***' Tr.1, "O Que Virá!" 4 min Tr.3, "Bom é Ter Esperança" 4 min Tr.10, "O Genesis" 5 min 13 50 With basically acoustic foundations with some electric/electronic elements the arrangements are in each song very varied. Psych/Prog Acid Folk. * Trace Disc Comunidade S8 : Apelo à Terra / "Claim to Earth" (BRAZ,197?)****° Tr.1, "Apelo à Terra" 4 min Tr.2, "Jesus é a Porta" 4 min Tr.5, "Jesus é a Rocha" 4 min Tr.8, "Jesus Querido" 5 min Tr.10, "Jesus é Socorro" 3 min 20 70 Religious concept. All tracks are dedicated to Jesus himself. Wonderful folk prog. Recommended. Possible their best record. Beautiful warm female voice (and some additional vocal arrangements) with folk prog band. * Trace Disc Comunidade S8 : Cantare / Singing (BRAZ,1984)*° Tr.13, "Vamhos Caminhar" 3 min 73 Music will change more and more driven by naive good hearted idealistic content. This is often still played/sung relatively well, but it's much more mellow in its (vocal and instrumental) arrangements. There's a kind of self-protective mood there are not much challenges left on a musical level either. The wanne-be- good is so over present there's not much inner power / contrast / strong structure / musical dialogue left to make the concept sound very solid. * Trace Disc Comunidade S8 : Pela Liberdade / "For Liberty" (BRAZ,1989) Change in style. Much more modern/mainstream. To avoid. "As far as I remember, they released more albums, too, but much more pop stuff, I never got them. To be honest, "Pela Liberade" is already quite uninteresting... As I said, it never got much success by here, due to the extremely religious lyrics." Marcelo Spindola Bacha SINTESIS * Sol & Beneb R. Sintésis : En Busca de una Nueva Flor (CUB,1978)***** Tr.1, "Nueve Ejemplares..No Tan Raros" 9 min Tr.2, "Ven A Encontrarnos" 4 min Tr.5, "Poema" 6 min 19 Tr.3, "Primera Noche" 8 min 27 100 Info label : sol+deneb@data.net.mx One of the most interesting / my favourite prog items from Latin America, and one of the only prog items from Cuba. Somewhat in Italian style, but with beautiful emotional vocals and a completeness, with subtily in expression and still with powerful contrasts like in most Latin Prog classics. Cover scan, links & info : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/Latin2.html A BARCA DO SOL * Omavaçois A Barca Do Sol (BRAZ,197?)***** Tr.1, "A primeira Batalha" 4 min Tr.4, "As Boas Conciencias" 4 min 8 108 A very good psych folk / folk prog release with some unique original arrangements. * A Barca Do Sol : Durante O verao (BRAZ,197?)***** Tr.13, "Hotel Colonial" 5 min Tr.14, "A Lingua e a Bainha" 3 min Tr.19, "Belladonna, Lady of the rocks" 6 min 14 122 As interesting second album. I did not hear / found their third album yet. The group also participated in Olivia Byington's first album (1978). Also that album is very good (reissued on 1 cd with her second album, which is mostly dark canto). * Warner Music Olivia Byington : Corra o Risco (BRAZ,1978)**** Tr.8, "Água e Vinho" 3 min Tr.9, "Brilho da Noite" 4 min 129 Incredibly melancholic track, classically & chamber folk and at the end a bit more acoustic sound experimental arranged by Barca Do Sol. "Brilho da Noite" is a contrasting freaky hard prog rock song. Two great tracks ! Cover scans & links : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/Latin.html & http://www.casadorock70.hpg.ig.com.br/barca_do_sol.htm LULA CORTEZ (& ZÉ RAMHALO) : * Rozenblit Lula Cortes e Zé Ramhalo : Caminho da Montanha do sol (BRAZ,1975)***** Tr.1, "Trilha de Sumé" 9 min (fragment till piano piece) Tr.4, "Harpa dos Ares" 5 min (fragment on cdr version) Tr.7, "Raga dos Raios" 3 min (fragment on cdr) 145 Amon Düül (Paradieswärts) like improvisation on first track, very psychedelic, with weird second vocals, instrumental solo freakouts. Most tracks are very varied, but it's always a kind of psych with ever expanding structures. Unique, challenging, inventive. Structurally it's somewhat comparable to Alan Sorrenti's "Aria". It was reissued this year on LP format (Shadox Music). I'm not sure if I got the titles right. Info on this items at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/Latin.html * Rozenblit? Lula Cortes & Jarbas.. : Om Shankar Bolenajh"(?) (BRAZ,197?)*** Tr.3, 3 min Sitar track with tabla, acoustic guitars, acoustic raga guitar. I got hold of a taped copy only. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other playlists : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/2003.html General index page : www.radiocentraal.be/psychevanhetfolk More detailed index page : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/index.html Receive weekly playlist before the radioshow with new on line reviews and various additional comments / news : ontvang wekelijks playlist vòòr de radio-uitzending : Subscribe / schrijf u in : psychevanhetfolk-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
