Playlist “Psyche van het Folk”, Radio Centraal, Antwerpen : 2004-11-17 New reissue(s) & new releases in psychedelica, Rock In Opposition & avant-pop field. - REISSUE * Black Rills Rec. Werwolf : Creation (D,1982)***° Tr.1, “Die Reise ins land der Flugschweine” 9 min Reissue of very good, somewhat melodic but nice and sweet symphonic art-folk item with a kind of Annie Haslam-like vocals. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog.html - PSYCH * Gath.Dust Rec. Zaam : Nature Beyond (B,2004)***° Tr.2, “Rejoycing Nature” 10 min Tr.6, “Nature Beyond” 12 min 22 -31 Perhaps the best album of Zaam to start with ? “Rejoycing Nature” is a beautiful track of psychedelica with some acid folk influence. “Nature Beyond” is similar in sphere, with vocals in Dutch, English, French, German and even some other languages, with some additional didgeridoo and a taped child’s voice. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/belgium.html Gig in Antwerp : Friday, 17th, Hopsack, Grote Pieter Potstraat, 20.30 hours !! * Paw Tracks Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti 2 : The doldrums (US,2004)° Personal fave of Annimal Collective, who released this blurred psychedelia item. For me extremely disappointing amateuristic nonsense. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog5.html - NEW CUNEIFORM RELEASES * Cuneiform Rec. The Richard Leo Johnson Trio : Poetry of Appliance (US,2004)***° Tr. 7, “4 Months, 4 Days” 5 min audio : http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/clipserve/B0002T7Z02001007/0/002-5239168- 6958464 Tr.1, “Highway 420 revisited” 5 min -40 audio : http://cuneiformrecords.com/realaudio/highway.ram Guitarist & violinist & electronic music man make an original skilful new guitar / strings/ electronica Fusion. “4 Months, 4 days” might be my favourite track, followed by “Highway 420 revisited”. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar3.html * Cuneiform Rec. Far Corner (US,2004)****’ Tr.7, “Outside” 6 min audio : http://www.far-corner.com/outside.ra Tr.9, “The Turning” 8 min audio : http://www.far-corner.com/turning.ra Tr.1, “Silly Whim” 5 min 19 -60 audio : http://www.far-corner.com/silly.ra Extremely good and original ‘new music’ chamber music rock release, with some Univers Zero influence but also contemporary music, and on “The Turning” jazzy piano improvisation where Keith Emerson might come in mind. “Silly Whim” has also Hammond organ and is a combination of R.I.O. with some progressive rock and perhaps even prog-metal touch. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog8.html * Cuneiform Rec. The Muffins : Double Negative (US,2004)***°’ Tr.7, “Exquisite Corpse” 7 min audio : http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/wm2/muze.download.akamai.com/2890/us/uswm2/390/5303 90 _1_07.asx?obj=v41012 Tr.8, “They come on unknown nights” 5 min audio : http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/wm2/muze.download.akamai.com/2890/us/uswm2/390/5303 90 _1_08.asx?obj=v41012 Tr.9, “Cat’s Game” 4 min 16 -76 Audio : http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/wm2/muze.download.akamai.com/2890/us/uswm2/390/5303 90 _1_09.asx?obj=v41012 Very arranged combination of Canterbury, jazz-rock and R.I.O. style (Univers Zero). 2 tracks are more jazz with 2 members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. These three tracks are my favourite. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog3.html * Cuneiform Rec. Yang : A complete Nature (F,2004)****° Tr.1, “Les Deux mondes” 9 min Tr.2, “Soutterrain” 7 min Tr.4, “Compassion” 5 min 21 -97 Extremely good electric guitar driven release with some Richard Pinhas/ Heldon (prog-rock period) reference (especially on the first two tracks) and some Robert Fripp influence. “Compassion” has a more relaxed “emotional” guitar playing. Most tracks aren’t as wild as the first two tracks. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog5.html -AVANT-POP * Pers.Card. Rec. Birdbrain : I fly (EP) (US,2004)***° Tr.1, “Heat” 2 min Tr.2, “Sea Cow” 2 min Tr.3, “Mehran” 2 min Tr.4, “Dream of Things” 4 min Tr.9, “I Fly” 3 min -13 -110 In some funny way and trough coincidences I was thinking of Blurt when I heard this saxes /female voice release. Last track is the only keyboard track, with somewhat experimental voice a la Joan La Barbara / Meredith Monk perhaps.. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog9.html * private Ted Milton : Eat your house (UK,2004)****’ Tr. 1, “Eat up your house” -bounce remix- 3 min Highly original concept of a limited edition hand-made art-work with CD, sold a gigs. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog9.html BLURT : * Salamander Rec. Blurt : The best of Blurt vol 1 : The Fish needs a bike (UK,2004)***°° Tr.1, “Get” (1980) 4 min Tr.2, “Some come” (1980) 4 min Tr.3, “My mother was a friend of an enemy of the people” (1980) 4 min Tr.6, “Empty Vessels” (1982) 4 min 16 -130 Compilation of one of the most original sax/voice players in after-punk mode, but with humour and musicality, with ska mixed with punk like rhythms. I even like the roughest early tracks. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog9.html * Ripoff Blurt (UK,1982)***°° Tr.A3, “Physical Fitness” 7 min Tr.A1, “Dog save my sole” 5 min -143 One of my favourite 80’s LP’s I have. Weird sax and voice and woody drums. Highly original. There’s only one Ted Milton. You like it or hate it. I love it. Cover : http://www10.brinkster.com/blurt/albumpic/blurtblurt.jpg * Salamander Rec. Blurt : The best of Blurt vol 1 : The Fish needs a bike (UK,2004)***°° Tr.12, “Poppyrock” (1986) 5 min -148 Blurt has a gig 1st of December at Kaaiman in Antwerp. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other playlists : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/2004.html General overview index page : www.radiocentraal.be/psychevanhetfolk More detailed index page : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/index.html Newsletter of this radioshow and related WebPages : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/psychevanhetfolk/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- PS.
