PSYCHE VAN HET FOLK, Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium Wednesday Nov 12, 09-30 - 12.00 AM CONCEPT : AMON DÜÜL & AMON DÜÜL II Guest radioshow by Bart Van Peer. Amon Düül 2 with no doubt is one of the most important German "Krautrock" groups, with a highly original sound. Amon Düül, the preceding group was less interesting. Both groups were commune based. Amon Düül 2 was an interesting until 1974. Their style was a rich mixture of ideas coming forth from contemporary classical music, ethnical sources, progressive rock music and a lot more. "Phalus Dei", "Yei" and "Tanz der Leminghe" (my favourite)are the musts from this group. "Wolf City" is the most accessible release, together with "Vive la Trance", both very good too. Amon Düül's music mostly was too fastly recorded, in a very chaotic experimental psych improvisation style, not my cup of tea. Only "Paradieswärts Düül" is completely different. This is very fine acoustic psych. BVP : "Autumn 1968 they split into two factions due to ideological differences. While Amon Düül II soon became one of the most important German bands of the seventies, the first Amon Düül faction was more politically aware and would concentrate on political activities or demonstrations. Somehow, this faction eventually made their way into the recording studio as well. The result was five albums thas contain some of the most freaky music even produced in Germany. It's better to begin with a track from their 3rd album "Paradieswärts Düül", because it has a more folky approach (acoustic guitars, flute and English lyrics)." * Captain Trip Rec. Amon Düül : Paradieswärts Düül (1971), track 1 "Love Is Peace" (first 8 min. from 16) 9 min. track 6 "Eternal Flow", 7 "Paramechanical World" 9 min. These 2 bonus-tracks of this CD where originally released as a single in 1970. * Garden Of Delights Siloah : "Saureadler" (1970), track 5 "Aluminium Wind" (fragm.)10 min. Siloah, another Munich group had two releases. This release, clearly had very much "Paradieswärts Düül" like music. There are rumours that members of Amon Düül were involved in these recordings. * Spalax Amon Düül : Psychedelic Underground (1969), track 1 "Ein Wunderhubsches Madchen Traumt Von Sandosa" (fragm.) 10 min. BVP : "A typical Amon Düül track (as featured on their two first albums) consisted of rambling, repetitive congas, distant and untuned guitars and all members chanting along (or more precisely : screaming!) like it was a kind of mystic ritual going on right there in the studio. There are certain similarities with the utterly freaked out music by the American commune based Ya Ho Wa 13. Their first album many times was re-released with different covers and names on a lot of different labels. This record was one of the important influences for the first album of Nurse With Wound. It was the first LP Steven Stapelton ever bought." * Mantra Rec. Amon Düül II : Phallus Dei (1969), track 5 (08-00 min. to the end)10 min. BVP : "The reputation of Amon Düül II grew fast, and they soon signed a contract with Liberty. Early 1969, "Phallus Dei" (God's penis) was recorded with two guests : Christian Burchard (from Embryo) and Holger Trülzsch (from Popol Vuh). The album was a genuine late psychedelic masterpiece, a landmark in German rock. They were probably the first German band that was confident enough to present large amounts of improvised music. "Phallus Dei" was a travel through mysterious science fiction soundscapes, sometimes predating the sound of groups like Hawkwind. This album, like all the subsequent ones up to 1973, had spectacular psychedelic cover artwork." * Acme Records. Seventh Seal (1998): track A1 "Spiritual Springs' Slavering With Circling" (fragment) 12 min. Some newer prog groups were influenced by Amon Düül II. The most successful of them is Seventh Seal. BVP : Makoto Kawabata, the leader of the Japanese Acid Mothers Temple, was alkso influenced by Amon Düül. On Seventh Seal, a side-project of him, you can hear he picked up some inspiration on Phallus Dei. The album also contains Kawabata's interpretation of the four elements "air, fire, earth, water". * Mantra Amon Düül II : Phallus Dei, track 1 4 min. One of the Amon Düül II's concerts at the time was filmed, resulting in a musical cult movie "Amon Düül plays Phallus Dei. The soundtrack for the film "San Domingo" was recorded later the same year and for this they were awarded a 'Bundes'(=German or national)film prize. * Captain Trip Rec. Amon Düül II : Yeti (1970), track 4 "Gerberus" 5 min. BVP : "In 1970 the group released the double-album Yeti, which first record had acid-rock songs with all-time classics such as "Soap Shop Rock" suite, "Archangels Thunderbird (also released as a single), and Ey-Shaking King". The second part contains a reunion session with the other Amon Düül-fraction." * Repertoire Amon Düül II : Live In London (1973), track 3 "Soap Shop Rock", track 4 "Improvisation" 11 min. * Repertoire Amon Düül II : Tanz Der Lemminge (1971), track 2 " Restless Skylight-Transistor-Child" 20 min. * Repertoire Amon Düül II : Live In London (1973) : track 5 "Syntelman's March Of The Roaring Seventies" 8 min. An interesting live recording of this group. * Repertoire Amon Düül II : Carnival In Babylon (1972), track 3, 7 min. In 1972 Amon Düül did there first UK-tour. Some rumours about disbanding were brought to an end by the release of Wolf City; maybe there most successful album. On "Wie der wind... you can hear some ethnic influences. * Repertoire Amon Düül II : Wolf City (1972), track 5 "Wie Der Wind Am Ende Einer Strasse", track 2 "Green Bubble Raincoated Man" 10 min. * Spalax Amon Düül II : Utopia (1972), Track 5 "Deutch Nepal", Track 6 "Utopia NO. 1" 8 min. Outtake release, still very interesting ! BVP : "In 1973, before the release of the album below, some members left the group and joined Popol Vuh and Hawkwing. Amon Düül II became more song oriented. * Mantra Amon Düül II : Vive La Trance (1974), Track 3 " Jalousie ", Track 4 " Im Krater Bluhm Wieder Die Baume " 8 min. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other playlists : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/2003.html General index page : www.radiocentraal.be/psychevanhetfolk More detailed index page : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/index.html Receive weekly this playlist before the radioshow with new reviews and additional comments : / ontvang wekelijks playlist vòòr de radio-uitzending : Subscribe / schrijf u in : psychevanhetfolk-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
