Playlist “Psyche van Het Folk”, Radio Centraal,Antwerpen 3rd week of January 2005 New reissues from singer-songwriters combined with a few new releases ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part 1 REISSUE : * President Rec. Davy Graham & Holly : Godington Boundry (UK,1970)*° Tr.1, “I’m a freeborn Man (of the travelling people)” 3 min Here and there Graham shows opening up traditional styles, in a quite way. Here more jazz & blues is added. Most of the release has a somewhat “dated” sound. The disciplined control of all ideas of Graham still can still be enjoyable. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reviews2.html JOSEPHINE FOSTER PRIVATE RELEASES : * private Josephine Foster : These are eyes above (US,2000)***°’ Tr.1, “100 songs I sing” 2 min Tr.3, “Teeter Totter” 1 min audio : http://www.100songsising.com/webmp3/teetermp3.mp3 Tr.7, “Hey Matthew” 3 min Tr.10,“Yippie I’m learning” 2 min Tr.11,“Two not one” 3 min 11 Short ukulele songs sounding much more original than most blues anywhere. Funny and sensitive, at moments almost daytime lullaby like, always more “real” than real. I like the gentle purity here. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/folk2.html * private Josephine Foster : Little Life (US,2001)**°°’ Tr.2, “Stones in my heavy bag” 4 min Tr.10, “Hells bells are ringing” 3 min 7 -21 A bit like 30’s cabaret blues meant for a real life experience. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/folk2.html KEITH CHRISTMAS SPECIAL : * Small Town Keith Christmas : Stimulus (UK,1969)*° Tr.1, “Travelling Down” 4 min Tr.3, “Roundabout” 3 min 7 -28 Unofficial reissue of first album. Chosen are the first song and fine acoustic guitar instrumental showing Keith’s talent for guitar composition. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue.html * Mooncrest Rec. Shelagh McDonald (UK,1970)*°°°’ Tr.9, “Silk and Leather” 4 min Tr.4, “Waiting for the wind to rise” 4 min 8 “You know you can’t lose” on this album is a Keith Christmas song. Shelagh is one of Keith’s discoveries. “Stargazer” is her classic song. Her style is close to Sandy Denny and Jade. Her second album is the best. “Silk and Leather” might be my favourite track of this album. It has also wonderful acoustic guitar arrangements. It’s great to hear the different version of Keith Christmas’ “Waiting for the wind to rise” next to his own version. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue.html * Castle Music Keith Christmas : Timeless & Strange (1970-1971)***°’ (= Fable of Wings, 1970 & Pygmy, 1971) Tr.3, “Waiting for the wind to rise” 7 min (FOW) Tr.5, “Lorri” 9 min (FOW) Tr.9, “Travelling Down” 5 min (PYGMY) Tr.10,“Timeless an Strange” 5 min (PYGMY) Tr.11,“Evensong” 5 min (PYGMY) 31 -63 Compilation of all essential tracks from second and third album. Recommended except for two first tracks. Still wish it was a complete 2nd and 3rd album on one re-release. These are Keith’s strongest releases. Also the band plays great progressive in the two long tracks. I find here a unique flair in K.C.’s music. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue.html * Castle Music Keith Christmas : Brighter Day (UK,1974)*°° Tr.6, “Robin Head” 4 min Tr.7, “Getting’Religion” 5 min Tr.8, “Could do better” 5 min 15 -78 Already somewhat less interesting album with still a couple of very nice tracks, especially the whole side B is good / really ok. The LP is produced by Peter Sinfield & Greg Lake. It once found a CDd reissue. The “religion” track, for me still a classic song, is somewhat cynical. Funny but understandable it wasn’t on the American LP the time it was released. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue.html REISSUE : * Kissing Spell Nigel Mazlyn Jones : Ship to the Shore (UK,1976)***°° Tr.1, “A singulary Fine Day” 6 min Tr.3, “The Man and the deer” 6 min Tr.5, “How High the moon” 4 min Tr.7, “Port Quin Song (the lady on the beach)” 4 min Tr.8, “Ship to Shore” 13 min 33 Bonus tracks : Tr.11, “Hunter’s Tail” (instr.) 3 min Good singer-songwriter release with many brilliant moments. I chose the most Acid Folk(rock) like moments. Only on track 5 his voice and singing with guitar sounds very much like Bob Theil. The last track is brilliant and expressive as for instance Roy Harper’s Stormcock was. The chosen bonus track is a three guitars instrumental with Rob Lloyd and David Titley. Recommended. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue.html * private Nigel Parrington : Wino (B/UK,2004)*°° Tr.4, “Wormwood Blues” 7 min Tr.6, “Hole in my heart II” 4 min 11 Latest private demo from Zaam & Pocket Gods guitarist and solo-singersongwriter. Will get more airplay in the singer-songwriter radioshow from The Woolfeman. These are my two favourite tracks. Well produced, with harmonica, piano, electric bass, and guitar. Contact : highones@hotmail.com * Delmore Rec. The Black Swans : Who will walk in the darkness with you ? (US,2004)**°°° Tr.1, “Who will walk in the darkness with you ?” 5 min Tr.4, “Song without you” 4 min 9 Odd kind of singing, strong in its emotionality, accompanied by band. The first track is the strongest, most unique one. “Song without you has also nice string arrangements creating an extra layer of tension. If you like Anthony and the most depressed Tim Buckly try this one too. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-4.html * Bluesanct Static Films : Love of Light (US,2004)***° Tr.4, “Toward you in the water” 7 min Tr.2, Song for birds” 4 min In the early stage Static Films voice was weird and odd. Here it sounds all more for a professional result.
