Playlist “Psyche van Het Folk”, Radio Centraal,Antwerpen PSYCH-FOLK, ACID FOLK related music, part 3 : new psych-folk music, partly with sitar. * Zoku/EMI Olla Vogola : Gnanomo (B,1999)***° Tr.1, «Gnanamo» 4 min Tr.3, “Er is maar één weg naar Westvleteren” 4 min Tr.17,“Lune Perdue” 4 min 12 First track has a Cro Magnon touch to start with, mixed with some hurdy gurdy and orchestrations, some jazzy touch, fine driving energy. Very good ! Second chosen track is a medieval track, with some additional ‘Arabic’ singing, fine arrangement, some sitar and orchestrated arrangement. These are for me the most outstanding tracks, also because they are most succeeding as a crossover style. Last track is written by Luk De Gezelle (Nada member), with Bert (of Nada) on sitar, orchestrations and hand percussion. Other albums of the group show more the traditional fundaments. Here a good combination of contributions make the album best. The whole idea has potentional. This particular singing attempt I think is successful. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview7.html * Sept.Gurls Rec. Fit & Limo : Terra Incognita (D,2004)**** Tr.1, “Seraph” 3 min (with BF/BS) Tr.2, “Will you” 6 min Tr.5, “Wende dich her” 3 min (from ‘Songs of Songs’, Salomon) Tr.8, “Morning Wake” 3 min (with Timothy Renner) Tr.9, “Mary of Malibran” 3 min 18 (with BF/BS) -40 Wonderful new release of the more or less only German psych-folkers. Has several references to the old school of German Acid/Psych Folk. With the help of Bernd Witthüser, Timothy Renner & Black Forest / Black Sea. One of the best starters for the band. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview7.html * Phantasmagoria The God Box : Psymphonettes (D,2003)***° Tr.1, “Ultimate Altar Temple” 4 min Tr.3, “Door” 4 min Tr.14,“Snake Alphabet” 7 min 15 -55 Very good psychfolk-pop release of another group from Limo (from Fit & Limo). Nice songs accompanied by mellotron (or chamberlin, harpischord..) / guitars / bass / sitar / some sparse percussion. Songs are in English. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/psychfolkpopreview2.html * Les Enfants du Paradiddle The Kitchen Cynics : Master of the fuzzy fadeout (UK,2004)****’ Tr.1, “Rue Bonaparte” 4 min Tr.2, “Now’s the time” 5 min Tr.5, “Musing” 3 min Tr.7, “Songs of Spring” 4 min Tr.9, “Watersprite” 4 min Tr.14,“Games for a winter’s evening” 4 min Tr.18,“Now’s the time” 8 min 32 -87 Sill my favourite (genius) psych-folk singersongwriter. Like always, also this release is very good ! One of the guests is Philip Johnston on sitar. I also like their live version of “Now’s the time”, even with all the shitty chat of the public at the same time. “Song of Spring” is a duo performance with Jesse Poe (from Tanakh). Their voices fit perfect together. “Musing” is very poetic. “Watersprite” has a funny text title, the track after that, also funny sounds. Alan made it difficult for me again to leave out tracks… Impossible for me to airplay less. So far this release is only available through Alan Davidson. Review on : http://singersong.homestead.com/TheKitchenCynics.html (For Johnston’s demo release see further down). * Fleece Rec. Kable : Chlorophil II (US,1995)*° Kind of trash-folk and dark distortion underground styled with improvised ideas, somewhat chaotic and collage-like, but with underlying potency. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog9.html * Fleece Rec. Kable : Tardy all the time (US,1997)*°°’ Tr.1, “Everything in its place” 3 min Tr.3, “Show the alliance” 3 min Tr.6, “Sniffy Snout” 3 min 9 -96 Here the group becomes more focused and acoustic, partly in the direction of Animal Collective / Residents / Cerberus Shoal ..with fuzz guitars but also with weird vocals. Some songs have a more Indie sound but it goes often beyond normality in many ways. “Sniffy Snout” sounds as weird as Renaldo & The Loaf. These tracks are the weirdest acoustic tracks, and this is how I personally like Kable very much, but we also have darker, somewhat experimental and distorted Indie tracks on the album. Review and links : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog9.html * Fleece Rec. Kable : 3 (US,2000)*°°’ Tr.1, “We need the light” 3 min Tr.6, “Within the Lines” 3 min Tr.10,“Faith is enough” 3 min Tr.11,“Consternation” 2 min Tr.12,“Tabulator” 3 min 14 -110 Most consistent and most one-style-directed release of all Kable albums. Here they make a good compromising combination of the 80’s experimental and independent sound with fuzz guitar with the acoustic experimental side. The singing harmonies, like in the second album are somewhat comparable to how Cerberus Shoal treats their arrangements of vocal harmonies. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog9.html * private Pure Luege : Law & Order (D,2003)*°°’ Tr.7, “Mehr ist Anders” 4 min Tr.11,“Tungsten” 6 min Tr.12,“Ponnypoesie” 5 min 15 -125 Another project with Limo (from Fit & Limo, Shiny Gnomes,Discolor,The God Box,..). Mostly more Indie Pop Electronica styled. This is a more quite track. All tracks come forth from improvisational ideas. First track is a sweet pop- electronica-song. Second one is a modern, excellent pop-techno instrumental. Last track is another pop-electronica song with Limo’s voice. Only 100 made. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/psychfolkpopreview2.html * Leaf Rec. Efterklang : Tripper (DK,2004)-? Promo-release was send before Christmas days but never arrived, so it was probably stolen. 15 minutes for this item were reserved. No shops had it in the last moment. Instead I need to broadcast something else near the end of the show. Will still get broadcast in a few weeks. It is a combination of psych-folk with electronica. Review expected: http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/psychfolkpopreview2.html * demo Philip Johnston : Sundaram (demos) (UK,2004)***’ Tr.2, “Together we stand inseperable in love” 4 min Tr.4, “Vrindavam” 4 min Tr.5, “Sundaram, part 1” 4 min 12 -137 Combination of musicianship with jazzfusion, Indian music, singer-songwriter and groove pop trance and psych-folk interest. “Vrindavan” has prog flute, acoustic guitars, swinging drums, sweet summer breeze (-of-Donovan-time) vocals. Also “Sundaram” has a neo-late 60’s hippie feel (sitar, duo vocals, sitar, flute). Very fine demo !! Recommended for an official release. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/psychfolkpopreview2.html Outro : * Rebirth Rec. Langsyne (D,1976)***°° Tr.1, “Medina” 9 min Tr.4, “”Ennghannedd” 8 min 17 (until end of show) One of the classic old psych-folk releases, somewhat like ISB but still very much in their own way. Phil Thornton & Hossam Ramzy : Enchanted Egypt (EG/US,2004)***’ Tr.1, “Apostles of the Interface” 6 min Tr.3, “Zaiellas” 7 min Tr.7, “From Memphis to Heliopolis” 7 min 20 Groovy Middle Eastern belly dance music with “modern” touch and production. “Zaïellas” has oud solo intro and some Arab orchestrations. This is part three of a similar cooperation, and perhaps the best of all three. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast.html * Indies Rec. Al-Yaman : Hurriya (YE/IS/CZ,2004)***° Tr.3, “The prophet” 7 min Tr.11, “Allah wahed” 5 min Tr.13, “Ya-helw” (hypnotic mix) 4 min Tr.14, “Gusun Al-Gana” (Transglobal Underground mix) 6 min 22 -42 Project with group members from Yemen, Israeli & Czech Republic, based in Praha, Chzec. Good interpretations and inspirations from traditionals from Yemen and other (mostly North African) countries. Also somewhat belly dance / club dance related, with here and there an Indian touch and some clear techno influences, with a female Arab voice lead singer. This release gives best enjoyment when you put it on from beginning to end, more than when picking out tracks, except perhaps for those I chose here. Traditionals have many similar repetitions which you don’t notice so much when going into the music from beginning to end. Last track is a good techno mix of one of the song performances. Recommended to DJ’s. I really like the Indian touch. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast.html * private Nihil Project : Paria (I,2004)****’ Tr.1, “La Realta’ e’ la mia illusione” 9 min Great track with Middle Eastern fragments of singing, techno and psychedelica, composed by Antonelli Cresti, Janex and Hypnowave. More of the group the 4th week of January. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog5.html Outro : * Srs Handgjort (S,1971)**** Tr.1, “Kerala” 3 min Tr.2, “Over the hill” 5 min (fragment) Wonderful sitar psychfolk release from Sweden.
