Playlist “Psyche van het Folk”, Radio Centraal IMPRESSIVE SOUNDS OF QUARTETS, TRIO’S : FLESQUARTET (from Sweden) special with some APOCALYPTICA,.. I never understood the fuzz about quartets like Kronos Kwartet who tried to open up conservatorium classical music but for me never succeeded to have any of the advantage of the vivid energy of art-pop/rock/prog musicians that have the intuitive composition style. Luckily there are plenty of other better examples. In this show you’ll hear a few of them, but most attention will go to the talented Flesquartet/Fläskkvartetten. * JMT Prod. Arcado (Mark Dresser, Mark Feldman, Hank Roberts) : Behind the Myth (D/US,1990)**** Tr.6, “Somewhere” 6 min 6 Some of the most remarkable talents playing together (cello, violin, double bass) in this incredible trio, playing with all their skills. I also have their earlier release and some solo release by Mark Dresser, but this remains the most impressive one. Style: I guess this is basically composed contemporary jazz music with some improvisation part. “Somewhere” is one of the most vivid tracks. Strong explorative sound of a quartet, with some adventurous modes, always in a very controlled spontaneous way. The album is so good I can hardly leave out anything. Highly recommended. While the band made (art)pop music before this is an incredible move ! “Don’t surrender” also uses an electronic sequenced rhythmic loop. Impressive from start to end ! Here more and a different use of string quartet with electronica is tried out and worked out even more. Another great release & very well produced. We hear also a bit more use of electrified strings. It’s partly a more heavy album compared to part 1. Last track is just an electronic and semi-acoustic loop. Very good album! Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/sweden.html * MNW Rec. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/sweden.html * Primal Music Fleshquartet : Love Go (S,2000)***° Tr.15,“Elimbao” 6 min Tr.16,“Farewell Sweet Prince” 3 min 9 99 Most “sophisticated” and “controlled”, perhaps it’s also the least adventurous release of the 4 albums I know of. Never the less also this album has also some new ideas which were not tried out elsewhere, like in “Elimbao” which used aggressive hard rock like electric chords. Great track! “Farewell..” is more romantic and seems to use a flute organ ? as extra instrument ? Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/sweden.html * Polygram Apocalyptica : plays Metallica by four cello’s (FIN,1996)**°° Tr.8, “Welcome Home (Sanitorium)” 6 min 6 105 Soundfile : http://www.apocalyptica-online.de/ram/audio/apocalyptica_welcome_home.ram First release of Apocalyptica. I did a radioshow special Metallica/Apocalyptica before. This time I won’t compare both groups. Only some tracks stand out in this release. After this the group became even more matured in their style & sound. This track stands out. * Polygram Apocalyptica : Inquisition symphony (FIN,1998)***°° Tr.1, “Harmageddon” 6 min Impressive (real audio) video: http://www.apocalyptica.com/ram/video/harmageddon.ram Tr.4, “Nothing else matters (Metallica)” 5 min Video : http://www.apocalyptica.com/ram/video/nothing.ram Tr.11, “One (Metallica)” 6 min 17 122 Soundfile : http://www.apocalyptica-online.de/ram/audio/apocalyptica_one.ram Much more interesting release than the first release & a bit more electric. “Nothing really matters” is a classic if you ask me, with powerful subtle building up of energy. Some playing elsewhere is pretty aggressive. Also “One” is pretty good. The Metallica interpretations seem to appeal most to me. The originals are also outstanding pieces of the original group Metallica. * Polygram Apocalyptica : Cult (FIN,2000)***° Tr.11, “Hall of the Mountain King (Grieg)” 4 min Soundfile : http://www.apocalyptica-online.de/ram/audio/apocalyptica_hall_of.ram Tr.13, “Fight fire with fire” 4 min 8 130 Soundfile : http://www.apocalyptica-online.de/ram/audio/apocalyptica_fight_fire.ram The style becomes a method in composing. With much more use of ideas deriving from metal, with multilayered heavy & more dense overloading composition. I think these still might be my favourite tracks of this album. There has also been added some percussion. I didn’t try their latest album. I think this is their best release ( I heard so far). It was regarded by me as best release of 1998 (although I didn’t hear too many albums that year I still appreciate this album). But there’s another album which Ii regard as better. It’s the following album which Ii will airplay next. About the story of countess Bathory. Heavy music, but with a real content, and well composed & perfectly produced. An exception within the genre. It’s very well produced too. Not for the faint hearted. Although I usually listen to music with semi-acoustic foundations this still is my favourite album of 1998. I think the group went really into the spirit and musicality of it, without fake nonsense, except for the humour.
