Radioshow PVHF 2006-11-11, 20-22 hours on radio Centraal, Antwerp : EXPERIMENTAL AVANT- & ACOUSTIC PSYCH AND SITAR WEIRDNESS -------------------------------------------------------------------- Experimental avant-psych/rock/..: * Strange Attr. Cul De Sac : Ecim (US,rec.1991,re.2006)**° The album still is a bit too much rock and dark, and too little psych/ musically-intuitive for my radioshow. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog20.html#anchor_219 * Paw Tracks Animal Collective : Here comes the Indian (US,2003)***°° Tr.1, “Hey Light” 6 min Weird ritualistic abstract theatre music. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/expanding.html#anchor_52 * Fire Museum Alan Sondheim & Ritual All 770 : The Songs (US,1967)*°° Tr.2-3 (max.->030) 4 min -10 Reissued album from the famous NWW list, with kind of random communicative ideas of avant-improvisation, but remembering blues and jazz, resulting into something…unique ??? on the edge of cacophony, chaos and human order. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog14.html#anchor_160 * Germanophon I.D.Company : Inga / Dagmar (D,1970)****° Tr.6, “Schneeweisse Hände” 3 min -13 Comparable to the previous album, side B of this album, led by Dagmar Krause much more leads with contemporary vocals a band that tries to follow with jazzy leanings. This has already more constructive order with a unusual fundament. The singing reminds of the 30’s piece ‘Pierrot Lunaire’ from Arnold Schönberg. Perhaps still not with the most accessible result, but really very interesting, and ground breaking. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/Germanprogreview.html#anchor_35 * Psych-O-Path Blumen des Exotisches Eises : Karawane der Mystics (rec.1983-1985,pub.1986, re.2006)*°°’’ Tr.5, “Neulicht in Kalkutta” 3 min Tr.6, “Konfrontation einer heiligen Kuh” 3 min Tr.11,“Subtiler” (fragment max.3 min) 3 min 9 Bonus tracks : Tr.16, “ragagaga” (shortened) 3 min 13 -26 Another reissued album from the famous NWW list. A weird visionary psychotic and psychedelic music ritual, with a reference to a fictive mystic travel to the east. Beware : this contains sonic mind-breaking, insane musicality. These chosen tracks are the sitar weirdness with a big portion of musical incorrectness but never the less are still effective and blowing the mind as a psychedelic trip. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/Germanprogreview.html#anchor_31 * Kuckuck Deuter : D (D,1971)****° Tr.3, “Krishna eating fish & chips” 11 min Tr.1, Babylon” part 1, "Adantino" 4 min 15 -42 Brilliant and unique electronic/inventive Krautrock debut. After this album, Deuter explored the earliest musical forms of New Age. One track was with two sitars and electronica. It is the most melodically droning and hypnotic track. I couldn’t help it list a fragment from the highlighting A-side too. After this album, Deuter's style, influenced by some Idian guru's ideas, became more like kind of pioneering New Age styled. * Germanophon I.D.Company : Inga / Dagmar (D,1970)****° Tr.2, “Bum-Bum” 6 min Tr.3, “I watched the women” 5 min 11 -53 Also inspired on Indian flavours this is great soulful, powerful psychedelia of side A, led by powervoice Inga, known from Krautgroup Frumpy. This track has a percussive instrumental part. The other track is voodoo soul, with the same instrumentation and some improvisation. Review : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/Germanprogreview.html#anchor_35 * Godd.I'm a C. Moon Trotskij : I Fell But Andromeda Rose To The Stars (S,2006)**** Tr.1->7 min (fragment) -60 Very nice improvised album with partly acoustic psych jam evolution. From the Spacious Mind studios. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/sweden3.html#anchor_163 * URCKarm Hop-Frog's Refrigerator Mothers : Ghosts of a Primitive World (UK,2003-2006)**°° Tr.1, “Bedding down the revolution with a mouth full of shit” (fragment 6_>8 min) Tr.4, “Black Moth Scrap Serum” 9 min 17 -77 Communal improvisation group, who also uses some Middle Eastern flavours in the whole, mostly acoustic improvisation, mix. Second track is directing itself with rhythmically spoken words into a very attractive, Virgin Prunes-like ritualistic underground (wave-)rock. The related single has two highlights from this cd, like this track 4, and another part of the long track track 1. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/experimental.html#anchor_394 * Pax/Fire Mus. Helena Espvall : Nimis & Arx (US,rec.2005;pub.2006)**°° Tr.2, “Kretslopp av blod och stjärnor” 2 min -79 Experiments with cello and some electronica processing as fundament, by Espers cello player. This is my favourite track when taken out of the context of the album. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.com/expanding.html#anchor_85 * Home Claire Goldfarb : Or Propos (B,2006)****' Tr.1, “Miroir Renversé” 3 min Tr.2, “Kazan” 3 min 6 -85 Another cello improvisation/composition experiment, contemporary classic in style, with an emotional strength. Briliant. Also a very beautiful sound of the cello instrument itself. * Steel Helix Scot Ray : Rumi (US,2006)***°? Tr.1, 6 min -91 On 'Rumi' Scot plays dobro, 6 & 12 string dreadnaught guitars and 22 string chaturangui (Indian guitar). Bluesy guitar explorations that have an extra element because how the special instruments speak, with also a few more experimental sound explorations. For me, this solo effort is much more easily appealing than his duo group Gutpuppet with a mouth harmonica player. On this piece, you can hear a real vision and an ear for this also very special guitar. Review will be added later on http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar8.html#anchor_198 * Amish P.G.Six : music from The Sherman Box Series and other works (2006)***° Tr.1, “#1 for wire-strung harp with echo” 4 min Tr.3, “#3 for bray harp” 4 min 8 -99 This release is in a meditative way more experimental compared to his previous releases. It is already great to introduce these special harps to the public, PG Six succeeds to add more elements to it. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview5.html#anchor_120 * demo Sam and the Plants (UK,2006)***° Tr.1, “Elevator decent” 1 min Tr.4, “bonfire nightjam” Tr.7, “quick lament” 1 min Tr.11,“Mother’s Nightmare” 3 min Tr.13,“Pendopo” 2 min Tr.14,“Ghosts of gaudy lane” 1 min Tr.20,“Thai-Ping Waltz” 1 min Tr.25,“APM” Tr.27,“bonfire nightjam 2” 1 min 10-109 Fantastic Psychfolk/acid folk psych compiled ideas like a soundtrack concept. I think I will airplay more in the next psychfolk related radioshow. Compared to the previous eariest played weird moods, the clarity and human sweetness on this demo album still appeals in a very different, closer-to-the-heart way. I look forward very much to hear a real release. Here you can hear reminiscences to ISB,Wycker Man/Syd Barrett/Tea & Symphony,... Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview16.html#anchor_400 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ reissues : * Shagrat Amber : Pearls of Amber (UK,1969-1971)**°’ Tr.1, “Se Shell Rock Me” 4 min -113 I think the reissue is already sold out, but I just found this mini LP of the Donovan backing band, with lots of sitar, guitar, tabla songs. This song reminds me of Wizz Jones with John Renbourne on sitar. One of the members formed the bluespsych/sitar group Hurdy Gurdy in Denmark. Donovan wrote Hurdy Gurdy Man for them, but recorded the song for himself as well. Especially this song is very nice. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/reissue3.html#anchor_134 * Time-Lag Marconi Notaro : No Sub Reino dos Metazoários (BRAZ,1973)***°° Tr.7, “Antropologica” 5 min Tr.8, “Symphony in Re” 6 min Acid/psych Singer-songwriter item with some more normal tracks and some weird acoustic and electric psychedelic experiments. This album came after Satwa and before the off-shoot from Cortez-Ramhalo. It has its great moments, and certain uniqueness, and is very listenable and enjoyable from start to finish.
