Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen,Belgium SOME EMOTIONALLY RICH HIGHLIGHTS OF JAPANESE ACID CHAMBER MUSIC / RIO FOLK & beyond * Sky Station Tenjyo Sajiki : Den'en Ni Shisu (JAP,1974)***** Tr.1, 2 min Tr.3, 4 min Tr.4, 3 min Tr.6, 3 min Tr.8, 3 min Tr.10, 5 min Tr.11, 4 min Tr.13, 6 min 30 Not really like they described this with a kind of "Magma weirdness" etc. The Uniqueness of this item lays in the highly emotional performance, much more than in any other Japanese item I heard before outside the dark song oriented music. This still is close to this song oriented scene, and from there it is highly original in its core. It is the most emotional Japanese item I know myself. Track 11 has orgasmic choir and fuzz guitar, drums. The liner notes are completely in Japanese so I don't know the titles. Tenyo Sajiki was the theatre group of the an underground film-maker Shuji Terayama with the picked out of the street hippie J.A. Caesar as its composer. First and 6th track are children choir with drums, piano, electric bass, violin. Highly recommended to the (“naturally”) open minded. It's amongst my favourite Japanese releases. It’s a soundtrack to his 1974 film “Death In The Country”. Described as a fictional autobiography, it tells of a sensitive adolescent poet who later becomes a film director, who dreams of running off first with a neighbour's wife and then with a travelling freakshow. The film follows a subtle subconscious logic. And it shows the search for the true self trough underlying emotions and desires of the main character. The performance was done by youngsters who suffered from the state’s pressure, and found herein a refoundation of their true inner nature of self-expression. More than just being reactive the music takes all valuable elements of the past and present and refocuses them into an renewed innocence and emotionally rich level. Because the theatre group had the impression of some kind of reactive refuge against a bourgeoning society in those days members were more than once interrogated. P.S. Folk singer Kan Mikami participated with an emotional singing. Although the voices by actors are not always singing 100 % correct during the complete piece, it is too original to deny. The combination of elements, koto, operatic singing and heavy rock is at the best moments very impressive. * Belle Antique Trembling Strain : Anthem to raise the dead (JAP,1995)****° Tr.6, "In mourning in a Rain" 6 min Tr.7, "From the window of a pallid tower" 5 min 11 71 (Tr.1, "Funeral March" 2 min (fragment) 2 min ?) Another Japanese group I appreciate. Almost all their music is a reference to the departure of someone to the other life. Two pieces are funeral music and an actual funeral burial as heard from someone in the grave, in the first track from someone who is still searching to breath, in the second track from someone who realises its position of being buried alive, and with calmly developing from murmuring a song to growing fears about this situation. I played the second track. Most of Trembling Strain's music is rather minimal, like Third Ear Band is. They often sound like minimal music with use combinations of dulcimer/acoustic guitar. * Belle Antique Trembling Strain : Four Pictures (JAP, 1995)***°' Conceptual piece about music for various burial methods on the 4 elements. * Belle Antique Trembling Strain : Bottom of Empty (JAP, 1996)***°' Tr.5, "Slough" -to the memory of mother- 7 min 78 Cooperation of the group with Pneuma. The theme still is the same. Descriptive, quite music, slowly evolving acoustic music. This is made with the use of san- shin, oud, recorder, ryukyu-kokyu, bells and voices. A very sad departure track of someone beloved. * PSF Rec. Cinorama : garden, the garden (JAP,1995)***°° Tr.1, "Spinning Thread" 3 min Tr.6, "A face showing at an ivy" 5 min Tr.7, "The death horse-a night traveller" 4 min Tr.10, "A key to the field" 2 min Tr.2, "A librarian, a winter wood" 4 min 18 96 Avant-chamber folk group. Especially this release of them is in this style. With sometimes very emotional play. With the additional help of Haino Keiji. Info : http://www.forcedexposure.com/artists/cinorama.html * PSF Rec. Ghost : Temple Stone (JAP,1994)***° Tr.2, "Guru in the echo" 5 min 104 Perhaps still my favourite release of this Underground Acid folk group lead by Masaki Batoh. From recording sessions in all kinds of temples during 1993. I have the latest Ghost CD as well, which isn’yt bad either. They have a second release which I couldn't trace yet. Any help is apreciated. The group is somewhat related to the Japanese chamber music rock group Lacrymosa. Recommended. Lacrymosa : Bugbear (JAP,1983-1993)***° Tr.5, "Vision I, the death of the bird of paradise" 3 min Tr.6, "Confined the time emprissonement" 4 min 124 Good chamber music rock. With various more outstanding tracks. Info : http://www.gepr.net/l.html#LACRYMOSA * Poseidon Rec. Ausia : Kasa Kasa (JAP,rec.2001 & 2002,iss.2003)****°/***** Tr.5, "Housewarming in Alaska" 7 min Tr.8, "Lost on the way home" 5 min Tr.9, "Kasa Kasa" 12 min 24 Tr.2, "Night Dance" 3 min Incredible performance with also the fastest flute playing (recorder, shinobue, dengakubue) I ever heard + a skilful guitarist and equally gifted violinist. Incredible music ! The first track goes a bit over the edge. In general the item is completely outstanding. The title track is Indian Fusion, where the flute takes over, -unbelievable but true-, the part of the tabla. A unique track/experience and a must for every Indian fusion listener ! But also the complete release is recommended. A must-have. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview5.html PS. The label lately also released Daimonji, which is Ruins drummer (who turns into a skilful jazzdrummer) with a keyboardplayer & bass player into improvised & avant-prog jazzfusion. Here and there with Magma/.Ruins like singing. Altough it sounds like a studiorecording it seems to have been recorded live. I especially like the last 3 tracks of 4. Recommended to jazzfusion lovers with a (avant-)progressive edge. * Poseidon Daimonji : improg (JAP,2003)***° outro : Tr.3, “Night Dust (Monosyllabic Sex)” 15 min info : http://k-mania.com/gm & http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~ruins/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Webpage on Japan at http://progressive.homestead.com/JAPAN.html Second webpage on Japanese acoustic references with this radioshow will be published soon. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other playlists : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/2004.html General index page : www.radiocentraal.be/psychevanhetfolk More detailed index page : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/index.html Receive weekly this playlist before the radioshow with new reviews and additional comments : / ontvang wekelijks playlist vòòr de radio-uitzending : Subscribe / schrijf u in : psychevanhetfolk-subscribe@yahoogroups.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEST WAY TO VIEW THE LINKS : SAVE THIS AS TEXT-FILE, OPEN AS WORD FILE, AND ALL LINKS WILL WORK !!!
