Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal 2003-04-16 : INDONESIA PART 1 : Charming lightweight 60's and early '70's Indopop crossover examples with fuzz,moog,.. with guest in studio Marthy J.Coumans M.J.Coumans recently published a release with SINGAPORE examples, "Steam Kodok", 17 (LP- version) or 26 (CD-version) tracks of "a-go-go ultra rarities from the '60's Singapore and South-east Asia Underground". Because I have already some examples from Indonesian and Malaysian scene, and also Feddo Renier provided me some early examples for the radioshow, I decided to invite Marthy again to conclude the radioshow. At the end it became a separate show with music from Marthy's collection. More progressive rock examples will receive broadcast in part 2. Indonesia was a colony for some time from Holland. The result the last 30 years is that there are lots of Indonesian records to be found in Holland, because there were various import shops in Holland too, and I wonder if some albums were not printed in or for Holland. Because of these shops it might be easier to find LP's in good condition in Holland then in Indonesia. The covers often are a bit kitschy in a style with Technicolors. This was possibly both inspired by Holland's popular music (girls with heavy coloured backgrounds, etc.) as by Asian pop examples. Sometimes we can even find some Dutch tracks on these records too. And in more than one of the songs being played I also notice Dutch / French mainstream Pop influences, surely with the yeh-yeh girls pop. The tracks being played are a selection that stand out amongst more kitschy examples. It are recordings of better trash until progressive pop. Non of it has very "strong" compositions or singing, but all of chosen examples are charming for its sometimes very odd use of moog and fuzz guitars or for other crossover abilities. -All tracks with * come from Marthy's collection ; tracks with ° they are from Feddo's collection- Feddo's tracks were only mentioned but not played. PART 1 : INDONESIAN POP CROSSOVERS / BEAT PSYCH / TRASH / A-GO-GO Intro 3 min Mesra Rec. Various Artists : Parade 1968 * Tr.A1, WIDJAJA KESUMA : "Djakarta By Pass" 3 min Nice rock'n roll song, with somehow imitation like singing, reminds M.J.Coumans at the 60's Dutch Indorock groups that had some Indian groups touch. * Tr.A3, MELODIA RIA : "Mobil Omprengan" 4 min Not sure what style this is : in between rock'n roll and easy beat. A bit childish in singing and melody, but with strange use of electric guitar sound vibrations. * Tr.B2, BEATSTONE : "San Fransisco" 4 min Cover of San Fransisco's "Flowers in your hair". Singing is again kitschy on the edge of the acceptable, taverne like, with a strange psych organ on the background. * Tr.B6, NENNY TRIANA : "Siateng" 3 min A combination of 60's pop and fine R & B, with more raw electric guitars. Mutiara R. TITIEK SANDHORA : Edisi Istimewa * "Pura Pura Bentji" 4 min Strange mix of lightweight Indonesian pop with sadly only small psych fuzz guitar parts played originally in eastern or Asian ? scales. (Mutiara R. TITIEK SANDHORA : Si Tjantik Djelita (?) * "Pamanku" 3 min up tempo 60's lightweight beat pop song) Marthy acclaims the earlier records of her are traceable. Indra Rec. THE GEMBELL'S : Second album, Ballad Kalinas * Tr.A3, "Bunya Lalang" 4 min Nice sweet arrangements (cello-like keyboards ?,acoustic guitars, drums, organ) and sweet (almost mainstream) singing. * Tr.B1, "Adik Yang Lucu" 3 min a bit more funky beat (?) style, with sax, electric guitars, drums, organ. * Tr.B2, "Sweetheart" 3 min More relaxed English psych, sung in English. With piano, cello ?, drums, el. guitars. A very beautiful song. * Tr.B3, "Bile Tiba Saatnya" 4 min Same style and quality : very moody. Sung in Indonesian this time. * Tr.B4, "Senja Yang Indah" 3 min A bit more up tempo beat, with psych organ, some brass, electric guitar solo's. Instrumentation is good. This (second) full album of The Gembell's is more constant 60's psych album compared to most releases. ? ERNIE DJOHAN & THE NIGHTBRAKERS * Tr.B3 (?) "Hitam Manis" 3 min While this is obviously a mainstream pop song, we can hear the band is capable of a more interesting sound with a watery organ, electric guitars in direction of a garage sound. With nice electric guitar solo's. * Tr.B1, "Baireh Solok" 4 min A sing-along dance song (with Asian touch) combined with a beat garage styled Band accompaniment. * Tr.A?, "Entahlah" 3 min A light, and bit more funky beat (?) song, with beautiful psych organ, electric bass and guitars. Song on its own reminds us at 60's French (female) singers (pop). Nice. "Asia (especially Singapore and Malysia) had more ye-ye female singers, but also Indonesia had some. I like especially Ernie Djorhan with beat group The Nightbrakers" M.J.Coumans. From end '60's, beautiful lightweight dance psych. Philips Pr. ELLY KASIM * Tr.B1, "Hitan Massis" 3 min End '60's. Another female singer. Her singing style sounds at moment a bit Middle Eastern (,Turkish), then more bluespop, with a repeated riff from "I really gor you" from The Kinks, and a slight R&B touch. ? STEPS : Instrumentalia * "Ke Bina-Ria" 4 min Strange mix of funky a-go-go (beat) psych with varied rhythm changes, Shadowy guitars, a kitschy psych organ, electric bass / guitars. Very entertaining ! * "Gadis Gunung Asli" 4 min Another very nice a-go-go instrumental, with psych organ, echoed electric Shadows reminiscent , electric bass, relaxed drums. Known melody but we can't figure out what it is. Marthy says lots of the instrumentals on the group's records are more in Asian waterorgan chachacha styles, which are less appealing than these chosen tracks. Remaco Rec. DEASY ARISANDI * Tr.1, "Kangen" 3 min Very odd and original track with Indian tabla like basic sounds, and a moog synthesizer that sounds close to the fuzz -a fuzz can be heard too further on ?- Sounds close in style to an Indian movie song with a pop touch, with an experimental use of sounds of the instruments. Funny cover with a girl in 70's clothes before a small very rough wooden replica of a Holland windmill, in 'Technicolor' colours, with real grass green grass and pink skin of the girl posing. Canary Rec. OMA IRAM & INNEKE KUSUMAWATI & BERSAMA BAND : DE GALAXIES : Djangang Kau Marah * Tr.A3, "Warung Kopi" 2 min End '60's/early '70's psych with psych organ, electric guitars - with some wahwah guitar solos-,drums. (* Tr.B4, "Djangan Kau Marah" 5 min A bit less appealing in singing here, and a bit kitschy, still with that psych touch.) Negram PATTIE BERSAUDARA & BAND 4 NADA * Tr.B1, "Ku Selalu Membentjinu" 4 min Altough it says written by Pattie Bersaudara, the song reminds a bit too much at Sandy Sham & Pharao's'pop song "Bulebule". Played with nice R&R/R&B guitars. * Tr.A2, "Pahlawan Pengembara" 3 min Reminds me a lot at Morricone's "good bad, ugly sound". Marthy was attracked with his attention to the Joe Meeck's guitar sound. With nice female duo singing. A fine combination. Mutiara Rec. TITIEK SANDHORA & BAND 4 NADA : Pudjaan Hatiku * Tr.A1, "Tiada Lagi" 4 min Sweet Asian singing reminding me at the kitschy mainstream songs in Japanese scene. With unusual/oddly played electric guitars, some fuzz guitars/organ. On the cover (of this slightly later album than the ones being played before) she's dressed like a Japanese. Cover at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/files/titieksanweb.jpg (* Tr.A3, "Djangang Pergi" 4 min A pop song acclaimed to be "written by Setiawan. S". but obviously a cover from John Lennon's "Mother". In Indonesian she sings "Mama" any how. Renaco Rec. KOES : The best of (* Tr.A2, "Why do you love me" 4 min Sung in English, sounds a bit like Bee Gees according to Marthy. OK.) * Tr.A4, "Kisah Sedih Di Hari Mingu" 5 min Sweet 60's psych, with piano, moog?, and a strange slide guitar like vibrating organ / moog sound ? * Tr.A6, "Rasa Hatku" 4 min Same sweetness. Melancholic sing-a-long melody with again this strange beautiful sound of organ (moog ?). Koes were a very popular band. Although the LP covers looks nice most tracks from the band however according to Marthy are not worth to trace for being more mellow. I heard however one other album which contained a more rock track : (? KOES : Plus vol 1 : ° Tr.A3, "Kau Tinggalkan Aku" 4 min This track however is more hard punk / garage rock with electric guitar Outbursts. Not used in this show). Cover : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/files/koesplus.jpg PP Sound IVO NILAKRESHNA & STEPS : Golden Hits * Tr.B2, "Aquarius" 4 min Mostly mellow covers (Proud Mary,..) This is an OK version of the "Hair" musical song. The most original about it is that the band uses some inventive psychedelic guitar effects. Rest of record is according to Marthy more mainstream. Indra Rec. TRIO-ASTER vol II * Tr.B2, "Berteman Saja" 3 min Mainstream but funny uplifting tune, reminding me at the 60's Dutch Pop hits style. It has a childish melody, with kitschy organ, some moog solo. An enjoyable oddity. * Tr.B3, "Air Mata Tampa Cinta" 3 min Sing-a-long tavern tune, with additional organ, with echo on voice, again in a kitschy mood. On the edge of the serious. Reminds me at some end 50's, early 60's hit ?. PP Sound DIAH ISKANDAR & STEPS : Suara Sunda * "Beas Beureum" 4 min Yeh-Yeh female singing, in 60's mainstream Pop style. Reminds me at Dutch mainstream vocalist pop too. With good solo guitar, kitschy organ. ? TITIEK SANDORAH : Muchsin * Tr.A4, "Dengarlah Muda-Mudi" 4 min Starts and ends with nice fuzz guitar, some organ, drums,.. This is a more mainstream or typical western '60's pop tune (again in French or rather Holland mainstream vocal pop style) with female voice. On the edge of trash as well. * Tr.A1, "Putri Gunung" 3 min Interesting enough for its funny arrangements -and oddly sound of flute- on a More mainstream Asian Pop tune, creating an odd crossover, with Shadows guitars. Indo Music THE MERCEY'S : Yukzawi * Tr.A3, "Bauy" 3 min Sweet early '70's beat psych, with some really nice relaxed playing of the electric guitars, with additional organ, drums and vocal arrangements. * B2, "100 Hari" 5 min Fine use of moog synthesizer to create a mood, with additional electric guitars, drums. Progressive pop, with a 'pop' structure. With a very nice moog solo at the end. Takes its time for the performing. This was the 11th record of the group. According to M.J.C. most of what he heard of the group is more dull material. (? BENJAMIN S & IRINGA BAND PANJA & NADA : Si Djampang ° Tr.B4, "I'm a teacher" 4 min Solo work related with The Mercey's. More 70's R& B rock with psych organ ; will be played or again mentioned in the second radioshow) PP Sound LILIS SURJANI & ZANAL COMBO : Selamat Tinggal * Tr.A3, "Sjirik Dan Fitrah" 4 min Sweet uptempo pop song with Asian influence, with odd use of tremolo on the electric wah-wah guitar. * Tr.A6, "Selemat Tinggal" 5 min Asian pop song with nice addition of surf guitar. Interesting "middle eastern" touch in singing. Remaco GE AND GE : vol 2 * Tr.B1, "Biarlah Mati" 3 min 70's prog pop with a melancholic sing along melody. * Tr.B2, "Jauh Dariku" 3 min An even more melancholic pop song, with addition of some moog synthesizer, organ. (Irma Rec. DO RE MI GROUP : Satu Dari Sereba * Tr.A5, "Sadiwara" 4 min) 62 + 70 142 8 OUTRO PART 2 : OTHER CROSSOVERS FROM THE STEAM KODOK CD : Grey Past Rec. "Steam Kodok, 26 a-go-go ultrararities from the sixties- Singapore and South-East Asia Underground" Tr.13, NAOMI 1 THE BOYS (Singapore) : "Bad Loser" 3 min Good song in 60's pop style. Singing is very fine this time. Webpage : http://hometown.aol.co.uk/paraparaguy/NAOMINBOYSHOMEPAGE.html Tr.9, FOX (Thailand) : "Coke" (?) 3 min Original psych effects on this song -early Pink Floyd style-, psychedelic but with traditional singing ! Tr.19, THE QUESTS (Singapore): "Hur Pi Tzu Shau Hsiang" 3 min Strange mix of kitsch with a psych part with sitar. Homepage : http://home1.pacific.net.sg/~pisces/index.htm For next radioshow also in '60's style : Baal Rec. OCTOBER CHERRIES (Malaysia) : ° "Meet the BTR" 5 min ° "Can I hold your hand" 3 min ° "It's all there" 3 min 3 songs in Beatles style. Perfect. There's a less perfect "Barbajagal" (Donovan) cover on the Steam Kodok LP / CD. Baal Rec. MOVEMENT (Malaysia) : "Moratorium" ° "Movement part 1 & 2" 10 min Beautiful psych in Beatles style with weird effects, passages. An anti-war song.
