Playlist “Psyche van het Folk”, Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, 2005-04-27 : INDOJAZZFUSIONS. Intro before show : * SubRosa Tibetan Buddhist Rites from the monasteries of Bhutan (TIB,1971)***° CD2, Tr.16, “mantra” 1 min CD1, Sacred dances and rituals of the Nyingmapa and Drkpa order : Tr.2, “offering of the golden drink” 2 min Tr.4,5 : “long trumpets : throat ornament & two notes prolonged” 3 min Tr.7, “Petition to Chakchen” 5 min Tr.19, “long trumpets, “auspicious ending” 3 min 14 This is a nice documentary-like overview on various traditional musical expressions in Bhutan with great and some unique tracks and great as a document. However the most impressive, musically and transcendent Tibetan release I ever heard still remains “Tantras of Güyötö” on Nonesuch Records. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/TIBET.html Part 1 –acoustic guitarists- : * Lotus Music Peter Dickson : ‘live’ in India (IND,2001)***° Tr.1, “Himalayan descent” 9 min Tr.2, “Into the light” 7 min 16 -30 On “Himalayan Descent” you can hear an excellent approach of skilled flamenco guitar blended with Indian music. Also the second track is similar. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/indojazzreview2.html * Private Aradhna : Deep Jalé (IND,2000)***° Tr.1, “Subha Shaam Lun” 7 min -37 This track is a sensitive and very beautiful Christian/Indian devotional song. The music of Aradhna is a very devotional east/west fusion. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html * private Mathew Joseph : Firefly (IND/BERM,2004)**°° Tr.2, “Amanita” 6 min Tr.8, “Kaliyug” 5 min 11 -48 “Amanita” is my favourite song and instrumental from the album. The instrumental is a splendid and well arranged Indojazzfusion, and a great highlight of Mathew’s talent. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html * private Bun Kunin & Andres Sabogal : Point of Departure (US,2005)***° Tr.2, “Zila” 3 min Tr.3, “4 vistas” 7 min 10/15 -58/63 Very good, complex rhythm and acoustic string based, well arranged Indo-Fusion. “4 Vistas” has complex, beautiful rhythm fundament, a masterpiece. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html * Cope Rec. John Sund & Acoustic Sense : New Gems (DK,2003)**** Tr.2, “Right on it” 4 min -62 Very nice and professional Fusion. Will be airplayed more in another new Fusion radioshow in future. Ghanian percussionist Ayi Solomon’s play with John Sund’s guitar fit well with the Indo-fusion I’m focusing on now. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/FUSION.html * Cope Rec. World On A String (DK,2004)***°’ Tr.7, “Root & Branch” 8 min Tr.8, “India” 10 min 18 -80 (Electric) violinist and partial leader of this group has Irish, Indian and jazz-fusion flavour in his playing. Further we have acoustic guitar lead, acoustic double bass and tabla. These two are my favourite tracks. Fine group, great guitarist. There’s some McLaughlin influence here. Second track is live and comes closer to the Shakti sphere. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/world.html#anchor_54 Part 2 –indojazz- : * Zilka Rec. Kalyan Pathak & Jayho Jazzmata : The Shape of ragazz to come... (IND,2000)****° Tr.1, “Lost in the hills blues” 14 min Tr.3, “Lilooda Mol/Karna” 12 min 26 -106 A true sense of Indian jazz from the viewpoint of an Indian master, blending, or mixing Western Jazz and Indian music /Jazz with an inspirational “swing”. The group calls their approach “ragazz”. A must for Indo-jazz & jazz lovers ! Hope also to play the last track of the album some other time. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/indojazzreview2.html * Private Friedsitar : Fresh (CAN/CZ,rec.1999-2000)***° Tr.1, “Sa Dha Pa” 4 min Tr.5, “Smetana” 4 min Tr.11,“Fifteen” 3 min Tr.13,“Dim” 4 min Tr.14,“Bhairavi” 10 min 24 -131 Very good Indofusion & Indojazzrock,.. with a few other influences like blues, George Harrison, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix-blues, & rock etc. “Smetana” is Friedsitar’s first, dynamic composition. “Fifteen” is based upon a bluesriff in 15 beats. “Dim” has great freejazz riffs ideas on sitar. “Bhairavi” shows the band great live performance potential. With incredible bass performance on this one too! This private album will be released on Berlin Records soon. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/indojazzreview2.html * Dreampl.Music Alien Chatter : Music for aliens (CA/US,2003)***° Tr.1, “Kervah Swings” 6 min Tr.6, “Sagittarius A” 3 min 9 -140 Another rather unique concept of jazz(rock) with some modern (lounge) beats, based upon groovy bass, jazz drumming & tabla & jazz piano/keyboards and some programming production. Some tracks are more jazz, most of them are more dance- groove related, or are somewhere in between. These are my favourite tracks. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/indojazzreview2.html * Disclogic Garage Mahal : Mondo Garaj (US,2000)***°’ Tr.10, “Gulam Sabri” 8 min This is sitarguitar by Fareed Haque with his funky fusionrockband. Review & info : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar5.html#anchor_125 –remarks on sitarbeats-: * Private Stephan Mikés : The Good, the bad and the Karmic -sitar world fusion- (US,1995)*° This item might be used some other time. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIABEATS.html * Private Stephan Mikés : Secret Songs of the Sitar Player (US,2002)*°’ Somewhat consistent, mainstream-dance-groove rhythm related music with sitar and band. Releases of Stephan Mikés will be used in another sitar related radioshow. The beats sound too mainstream compared to the Indojazz I airplayed here. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIABEATS.html * Private Stephan Mikés : East meets South (US,2003)***° (Tr.7, “Appalachian groove” 6 min) This is a more classical raga styled related item from Stephan Mikés on sitar, with Dana Keller on dobro (or resonance guitar), and some percussion. The dobro player is able to play Indian styled music well. Will be airplayed in next show. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIAWORLD.html Outro : * Sonet Oriental Wind & The Karnataka College of Percussion (TÜ/IND,1984)****° Tr.1, “Sankirna” 7 min One of the best Indojazzfusion records ever. Incredible percussion !
