Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen New reissues for wyrd folk interests, with a subtleness in character. JUDEE SILL * Rhino Disc Judee Sill : Judee Sill (US,1971)***° Tr.1, "Crayon Angels" 3 min Tr.5, "Lady-o" 4 min Tr.6, "Jesus was a cross maker" 4 min Tr.10, "Enchanted sky machines" 3 min Tr.11, "Abracadabra" 2 min Bonus tracks : Tr.13, "The Phoenix" 3 min (demo version for the next album) 19 Discovered singer by Joni Mitchell producer. With lots of potential, marketed very well, but drug addiction and other things didn't let this talent enfold as much as much it could have been when it would have developed with a structuring life. This is the best of both albums. "Jesus was a crossmaker" has a special text. I think it might also have an underlying saying to say we must (and she can't help it to) be open (hearted) to any of the problems we are about to face in the world. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue.html * Rhino Disc Judee Sill : Heart Food (US,1972)**° With a bit more country and here and there more obvious solutions this album still is more or less good also thanks to the best production help. I preferred not to play anything of it. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue.html * private Judee Sill : demo's for 3rd album (US, 197?) Tr.2, "Till dreams come true" 3 min 3 21 There were done 8 or so songs for a 3rd album, which never got there. This track is the nicest amongst them. * private Judee Sill : outtakes (US,197?) Tr.11, "Emerald River Dance" 3 min Tr.12, "Poor tender maiden's lament concerning the world's situation at present, or ode to a wounded dove" 2 min 5 26 Sometimes of a painful down to the bottom of energy/singing etc. Some of these tracks still are still beautiful as they are. * private Judee Sill : living room recordings (US, 197?) Tr.14, "Lulu's song" 4 min 4 30 Blues folk song. ERICA POMERANCE : * ESP Erica Pomerance : You used to think (US,1968)*° Strange experiment of freaking out with singersongwriting in a semi-freeblues way. Interesting, but IMO not really successful, not in singing, not in composition, improvisation, not even when sitar is used to create "the moment". The idea is good, but the working out of it is highly unprofessional, hardly acceptable, outsider like, but strangely enough it works inspiring..(to do better). Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue.html LINDA PERHACS * Wild Places Linda Perhacs : Parallelograms (US,1970)***** Tr.15, "Chimacum Rain" 4 min Tr.3, "Dolphin" 3 min Tr.6, "Parallelograms" 5 min Tr.14, "Hey, who really cares" (with intro) 3 min Tr.8, "Moon and cattails" 5 min Tr.11, "Delicious" 5 min 25 55 A very serene singer-songwriter/folk item with nice voice experimenting and sensitivity. A classic. I prefer the demo version of the first track, which is more sensitive than the final LP mix. The second reissue in general is much better mixed. Last track is like very early Joni Mitchell. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue.html EXTRADITION * Vicious Sloth Extradition : Hush (AUS,1971)***** Tr.1, "Water Song" 4 min Tr.4, "Minuet" 3 min Tr.6, "Dear One" (to Meher Baba) 10 min Tr.7, "A woman song" 3 min Tr.9, "Ice" 5 min 25 80 Bonus live tracks (1970) : Tr.11, "Honeychild" 4 min Tr.13, "Ballad of reading Gaol" 5 min (text : Oscar Wilde) Tr.15, "Seeds of Time" 5 min Tr.16, "Ice" 4 min 18 43 98 One of the most subtle, beautiful, spiritual, but also serene and integer individual sound of all folk related items I know. Most of it with female voice, "Ice" is sung like Peter Hamill at its best. Also various bonus tracks are very unique. The bonus track "Honeychild" is a bit like early Pentangle. "Ballad of Reading Gaol" on text of Oscar Wild has a a very beautiful sad melancholy. "Seeds of time" has a COB reminiscence. The live version of "Ice" is so different, but so good as well I had to play it as well. It was really hard to leave out much of such outstanding release. (The CD version sounds better than the LP-audio ACDR copy of the earlier reissue I have). Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreviews2.html * Harvest Tully : loving is hard (AUS,197?)**°' (acdr2) Tr.6, "Ice" 8 min Tr.7, "Rest beloved" 3 min 11 110 With various same members, even with the same female singer, but the music here is basically 70's pop. The version of Tully of "Ice" is subtle too, and uses the earlier elements from Extradition, but uses them, still in a very fine way, a bit more melodically in its content. With additional orchestrated arrangements. For me it still is the best track on the album, and a nice variation of the song (sung by Shayna this time). "Rest beloved" has a Robert Wyatt like mood in singing, with piano. Another exceptional track. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreviews2.html FUCHSIA * Night Wing Rec. Fuchsia : Fuchsia (UK,1972?)****' Tr.4, "Shoes and Ships" 7 min Tr.5, "The Nothing Song" 9 min 16 126 A very good folkrock album, with nice combination of subtleness with strong clarity, string arrangements. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreviews2.html PS. Robert Wyatt had two releases recently. They are reviewed at http://singersong.homestead.com/Singer.html JADE * Lightning Tree Rec. Jade : Fly on Strangewings (UK,1970)***° Tr.3, "Fly on Strangewings" 5 min Tr.9, "Reflections on a harbour wall" 4 min Tr.1, "Amongst Anemones" 4 min Tr.2, "Raven" 3 min 16 143 Nice album. In style somewhat reminiscent of early Sandy Denny.
