Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, 2003-2-19. Turkish Progressive Music : * ERSEN : SINGLES AND LP'S * THE EDIP AKBAYRAM LP'S PART 1 : ERSEN Singles 1969-1978 : First singles were flamenco flavoured, move towards a more interesting Pop/Rock style. The had a charming performance style. But it was not until a bit later his style became really interesting. -1969 : * Tr.2, "Ak Güverin" 5 min (1969) Song with flamenco guitar. On "Olvido" on side A Urol Büyükgörenç (Kardaslar) plays Spanish classical guitar. -1970 : * Tr.3, "Unutma Sakin" 3 min 1969 Nice kitchy psych organ, with rock band (Önder Bali & Dörtlüsü). Charming bar music with jazzy sax. -1971 : * Tr.7, "Cakil Taslari" 4 min 1970 (with label's studio orchestra) Flamenco guitar, sax, entertaining, charming singing, a bit western movie reminding. Nice. & Tr.8, "Askin Rüyasi" 5 min 1970 (with label's studio orchestra) Again with nice flamenco guitar, electric bass, filmic orchestrations. Very charming voice. Romantic. When After the original singer Aziz Azmet left Mogollar the band took the charming voice of Ersen to sing for them. From this moment on the bands that played along with Ersen created with him really interesting and powerful music. * Tr.6, "Haliçte Günesin Batisi" 5 min (with Mogollar) 1970 Very beautiful psych, wonderful bass, Floydian organ, nice electric guitars, Saz ?,.. One of the best Turkish psychedelic singles I know of. A-side : & Tr.5, "Ternek" 3 min (with Mogollar) 1970 20 Also with a Turkish string instrument, Turkish rhythm. (Not being played because of too less time is "Beni Hor Görme Kardasim" 5 min 1971 : This is the only single with Üç Hürel. According to Oguz this is one of the best Turkish folkrock examples. With electric saz, bass, drums, electric and acoustic guitars, electric bass. The song itself is not that extraordinary, but there's an instrumental part that makes it somewhat more interesting. This single was successful. I found the next track a lot more interesting: -1972 : * Tr.13, "Kozan Dagi" 5 min 1972 Beautiful arabesque singing, with rock band and folk instruments (percussion, flute, Turkish string instrument). I was a big hit in those days. It's a great track. Beautiful. One of his most interesting folkrock tracks. With Taner Ongur on bass,..Seyhan Karabay and Hüseyin Sultanoglu. As powerful folkrock as Mogollar. (not being played due to a shortage in time Tr.15, "Sor Kendine" 4 min 1972 : Soft arabesque song with nice electric fuzz guitar.) * Tr.16, "Garip Gönlüm" 4 min 1972 (with Mogollar) Nice saz, electric bass, drums, powerful melody,.. -1973 : * Tr.17, "Cakmagi Cak" 5 min 1973 (with Kardaslar) Lots of electric guitars (including fuzz guitars), saz, lots of Turkish percussion with drums. Beautiful song. One of Ersen's best as well. Musically there happens a lot in a very short time. & Tr.18, "Günese Dön Cigegim" (with Kardaslar) 4 min 1973 With nice electric guitars / bass instrumental part. (not being played because of too short time : Tr.19 (321->) "Metelik" 4 min 1974, Beautiful saz and Turkish percussion, arabesk singing, with electric guitar outburst at the end of it.) - 1974 : * Tr.1, "Yine Seni Tanirim" 5 min 1974 (with Kardaslar) Even more electric guitars (including some fuzz, and funky guitars) combined with saz, Turkish percussion, beautiful singing. Perfect ! * Tr.2, "Bir Ayirlik Bir Yoksulluk Bir Ölüm" 4 min (with Dadaslar) A very beautiful psych track (organ, electric guitars, bass, psych organ) & Tr.3, "Yedin Beni" 5 min 1974 (with Dadaslar) A combination of more easy with more complex Turkish rhythms. Organ, electric guitars, voice.. -1975 : * Tr.6, "Dostlar Beni Hatirlasin" 4 min 1975 (sounds like Mogollar, but with Dadaslar) With saz, rock band, psych farfisa organ, an electronic music part. Romantic melody but also powerful passionate singing. With lots of rhythm changes, varying from funky to romantic parts. A classic. & Tr.7, "Üç Kiz Bir Ana" 4 min 1975 With interesting instrumental arrangements, also with electronic music instrument ? * Tr.8, "Gafil Gezme Saskin" (with Dadaslar) 4 min. 1975 Song with nice distorted electric guitars, interesting also for some electronic instrument ? & Tr.9, "Güzele Bak Güzele" 5 min 1975 Here with even more use of electronic keyboards, fuzz guitars, bass, percussion,.. Around this period Baris Manço made his "2023" album. It has been told Ersen or members of his band cooperated with this album. The album contained some interesting electronic music adaptations. - 1976 : * Tr.11, "Ne Sevdigin Belli Ne Sevmedigin" 4 min (with Dadaslar) 1976 80 Going away from Anatolian Pop here, with (Jazz) Fusion like electric guitars and keyboards, (funky bass), arabesk violin arrangements. Nice change in sound for this track. Singles after this are more orchestrated / arranged, but more mainstream in style with Arabesk pop rock influences. (not being played due to a shortage of time) Tr.12, "Ekmek Parasi" 1976 6 min A more quiet arranged song. Different singing. More Arabesk Pop). - 1977 : LP : ° Dünden Bugüne (with Dadaslar) ***** First LP is in fact a compilation of some singles between 1972 and 1977. - 1978 : LP : ° Ersen 2 : I believe also this album contain a following single collection. - 1979 : LP ° "Bu Da Bizlerden" : I never heard this album. - 1980 : LP : ° Hatamizi Bilmeden Cekiyoruz - Arabesk Rock ****° I really like this album. I really wonder if it's not recorded earlier, because singles from after 1976 don't sound so interesting, but this album does. The sound of Dadaslar is a bit more fusion styled and enriched with sax arrangements. Great. I wondered how much "the title Arabesk rock" at first was taking a distance from the Anadolu Pop movement to ensure the publication of albums ? I played the following tracks : * Tr.1, "Hatamizi Bilmeden Cekiyoruz" 5 min * Tr.2, "Gazan Mübarek Olsun" 4 min Track with organ, some nice sax arrangements, funky guitars, beautiful arabesque singing. * Tr.4, "Kahve Yemenden Gelir" 5 min * Tr.6, "Alli Turnam" 5 min * Tr.8, "Bir of Ceksem" 5 min (a bit shortened) The LP is very enjoyable. Derived from Anatolian Pop this has possibly some more Arabesque influences in the singing. And some nice mellow sax arrangements. Late single : * Tr.19, "Akla Karayi Seçtim" 4 min 1978 Very kitschy song, with orchestrations, but also some moog in the arrangements. Still one of the better, more enjoyable tracks from after 1976. - 1981 : LP : ° Mucize I never heard this album -1983 : LP : ° Anadolu Pop The style of Dadaslar is not that powerful any more. It becomes like a slightly more (mellow) mainstream version of the earlier concept. Rock band has a much more weakened sound, surely the keyboards make not much musically contributing sense. This is basically more song based music, and the band is less driven by the music. I did not choose any track. - 1985 : LP : ° Vatan Bizim Ülke Bizim El Bizim I never heard this album. - 1986 : LP : ° Geçti Borun Pazari The style of this album still is similar to the "Anadolu Pop" album. There are more attempts of an improving sound without ever succeeding. The singing part simply is not in a creative process with the instrumental music any more. The history of Ersen ended sadly. He began singing for police bals, sang even with tavern musicians until he finally quit music. PART 2 : THE EARLY EDIP AKBAYRAM LP'S : Edip's music on first two albums is typical Anatolian Pop Rock : Anatolian traditional folk melodies enriched with the rock band sound. The sound of these albums is both more traditional as usual (melodies) as more heavy rock (band). Most powerful at the chosen tracks. ° LP Edip Akbayram 1974 **** * Tr.1, "Ince Ince Bir Kar Yagar" 4 min 113 Heavy rock sound combined with some folk instruments (saz and Turkish horn) and on this track with rock voice. I will compare this track with Selda's psych rock version (from 1975) : * Selda Bagçan : Tr.4, "Ince Ince Bir Kar Yagar" 4 min * Tr.2, "Degmen Benim Gamli Yash Gönlüme" 5 min 122 In the first album the sound of the voice leans best to the heavy rock sound in various tracks. * Tr.6, "Daglar Dagladi Beni" 6 min 128 Original use of vibrato electric guitars in the instrumental introduction, with good progressive rock arrangements and electric guitars. * Tr.7, "Yakir Inceden 4 min 132 Wawa-, fuzz- and electric guitars, some electric ? saz ? Very powerful vocals. Most interesting LP, with tough rock sound combined with folk instruments. One of the better Turkish rock LP's. Dostlar might have been a less celebrated band but the musicians surely are talented. ° LP Edip Akbayram : Nedir Ne Degildir 1975 ***° * Tr.10, "Sen Açtin Yarayi" 4 min With odd adition of Tull like flute. * Tr.12, "Zalim Zazlim" 3 min * Tr.13, "Kaslarin Karasina" 3 min * Tr.5, "Gam Üstüne Gam" 5 min (big part) 15 147 While I like the intro by the electric guitar very much, the singing has a certain primitive character. This LP is still somewhat as good as the first one, but still the first is the classic one. Instrumentally the album has very strong moments. It would have been fine without singing too. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- More info on Turkish Progressive Music http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkey.html More info on ERSEN : http://progressive.homestead.com/ERSEN.html More info on EDIP AKBAYRAM : http://progressive.homestead.com/EDIP.html General index page radioshow related webpages : http://psychevanhetfolk.Homestead.com Other playlists : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/2003.html
