Playlist "Psyche Van Het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium : CERBERUS SHOAL (exp.prog) & JOSHUA (psych folk) + latest releases of In Gowan Ring (acid folk), Devendra Banhart (lo fi s-sw), Marianne Nowottny (avant s-sw) : 2003-02-12. CERBERUS SHOAL : * Temp.Res.Lim. Cerberus Shoal : Homb (CAN,rec.1998)** Tr.5, "Myrrrh (reprise)" 15 min 15 This early period Cerberus Shoal takes its time for its improvisations, always travelling on smooth rhythms. This track has middle eastern instruments too. Trumpet reminds in mood at Miles Davis. A beautiful track. * Pandemonium Rec. Cerberus Shoal : Crash my Moon Yacht (CAN,1999)***°° Tr.2, "Breathing Machine" 11 min Tr.8, "Ashpodel" 7 min Tr.3, "Elle Besh" 14 min (shortened) Tr.1, "Changabang I" 3 min 34 50 Possibly the group's most interesting release. Takes time, not to apreciate, but to feel the full potential, an essential listen. Some psychedelica, fine percussion, electronica, electric guitars, some trumpet, lots of acoustic elements, very professionally structured songs and instrumentals. Impossible to define under any category. * Temp.Res.Lim. Cerberus Shoal : Travels in constants vol 10 (CAN,2001)**° Tr.1, 7 min 5 (shortened) 55 First track is wonderful electronica / keyboards, hand percussion on a smooth rhythm, a la Can. Second track has an even more tempered rhythm. This track is mixed in the following during the radio show. * Temp.Res.Lim. Cerberus Shoal : Mr.Boy Dog (rec.1999-2001)**° CD2, Tr.6, "An Egypt that does not exist" 11 min (shortened to 7 min) CD1, Tr.6, "Vuka" 4 min 11 68 An album that shows the group's evolution. I prefer the most worked out instrumentals, especially the more melodically compact "Vuka". The other two tracks are again instrumentally made within a larger span of time. * North East Indie R. Alvarius B & Cerberus Shoal : The Vim and vigour of (US/CAN,2002)***°° Tr.2, "Blood Baby" (Alvarius B) 3 min Tr.4, "Blood Baby" (perf. Cerberus Shoal) 6 min Tr.5, "Viking Christmas" (perf. Cerb.Shoal) 5 min 14 82 Alvarius B is one of the composers of the Sun City Girls. This group has released over 30 CD's of material, with often lots of improvisations. I don't know the group well enough to recommend any releases. A genius release that however takes more time to enfold its full potential. Odd for sure. Cerberus Shoal worked very inspired on Alvarius B his songs, with both its wonderful, highly original instrumental/vocal arrangements. With intriguing moments. * North East Indie R. Herman Düne & Cerberus Shoal : The Whys and hows of (F/CAN,2002)***° Tr.2, "Garaje" (Herm.Düne) 1 min Tr.3, "A Sight for Soul Eyes" (Herm.Düne) 3 min Tr.9, "Sweetie" (Cerb.Shoal) 6 min 10 93 Herman Düne seems to be a French experimental folk psych group that uses a lot of interesting textured ideas. The style of the Cerberus Shoal songs fits perfectly. JOSHUA : * Feather One's Nest Joshua Burkett : Owle Leaves Rustling (US,1995)* 2 sides of improvisational lo fi acoustic hippie / experimental trip. Basically interesting, but would have been much better with the best recording equipment / production. Too many details got lost as noisy texture. There was not enough time left in the show to give airplay to some parts. * Feather One's Nest Joshua (Burkett) : Life Less Loose (US,1997-1998)**° Tr.1, "Working Day Routine" 4 min Tr.2, "Let it go" 3 min Tr.4, "Stupid Hope" 4 min 11 104 Nicely textured / coloured minimal psych folk with lots of musical acoustic sounds ideas. Often very poetic, (like the chosen tracks) sometimes a bit chaotically lo fi. Very limited, hand made cd package in the shape of a house. * Feather One's Nest Joshua (Burkett) : Gold Cosmos (US,2001)**** Tr.14, "Thought Hands" 7 min Tr.8, "Lilac Moon White" 5 min Tr.9, "Lavender Eagle's return" 2 min 14 118 Worked out with cooperation of P.G.Six, Six Organs of Admittance,..Psych folk songs, partly instrumental, with various musical coloured ideas. Nice release, and Joshua's best so far. Also professionally recorded this time. & IN GOWAN RING : * Lune Music In Gowan Ring : Hazel Steps through a weathered home (US,2003)**** Tr.1, "The Orb Weavers" 6 min Tr.3, "The Seer and the seen" 4 min 10 128 Very poetic release of intimate mystic songs, more minimal as earlier releases, sparsely arranged, towards the core of an essential expression. Very difficult to take out better track, because they all sound essential. At first I had also chosen "The Wind that cracks the leaves", "Kingdom of the Shades" and "Morning's Walking Dream" but I decided to play some other releases too. & DEVENDRA BANHART : Young God Rec. Devendra Banhart : Oh me oh my..the way the day goes by the sun is setting dogs are dreaming love songs of the christmas spirit (US,2002)**° Tr.2, "Roots" 2 min 130 Tr.6, "Cosmos and demos" 4 min Tr.8, "Lend me your teeth" 2 min Tr.14, "Happy Happy Oh" 2 min 10 138 Voice that reminds at places at early Marc Bollan (during the period of Tyrannosaurus Rex). Weird lo fi songs. Highly appreciated by many. No idea what to think about it. These tracks surely are original. & MARIANNE NOWOTTNY : poem : 1 min Camera Obscure Rec. Marianne Nowottny : illusions of the sun (US,2002)**° Tr.5, " Grey City" 5 min Tr.7, " Sweet and low" 5 min 150 Almost like outsider singer-songwriting. Very odd sounding songs. I prefer these two songs. I don't understand how one can take this 100 % serious. But seen from beyond its oddity it's worth investigating. 11 febr.2003 (c) Gerald Van Waes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reviews 'and links) from CERBERUS SHOAL releases at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/expanding.html And http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/poorminstrels.html Reviews and links from JOSHUA releases at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview.html Reviews and links from IN GOWAN RING releases : Reviews and links for DEVENDRA BANHART releases : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/poorminstrels.html Reviews and links from MARIANNE NOWOTTNY release : http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General index page : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/index.html Other playlists : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/2003.html
